Andrew, Le Quan: Some of the rules: Each side plays with 11 players each, you cannot change players mid-game once the team is finalized, once a batter is out, he cannot play again for that game. The spin on the ball is something that depends on the ball condition (as it wears out) and also the ground condition over the duration of the game. But you guys did a good job for picking up the game quick, well done ! :)

@@MarioBritto76 Cinematic liberty is definitely a big thing in this, the time period this is set in actually had 8 balls per over, but this movie only had 6 per over.
Amir Khan's character is an all rounder opener that hits a century in his debut game and takes wickets too.
And obviously there is a Mankad in this movie too! (though that is not a wrong thing)

@@kvm6 Yeah, Bhuvan would have been the man of the match for this one sure. He hit a century and took two wickets at the same time, that's some really good all-rounder skill.
Although I would root for Kachra to get the man of the match title, as he turned the match around at the most critical juncture with his hat-trick. Without that hat-trick, the match would have been lost.

Gauri's dad was also 'Out' because of the rule 'Leg Before Wicket'. By some miracle Ismail wasn't because the ball hit his ankle, but his ankle was not in front of the stumps. Otherwise he would be LBW too.
All 11 players that are in a cricket team can come and bat, but only some are specialized batters who understand what delivery to play and leave, and how quickly and slowly to score runs to stabilize the innings and shift momentum in the team's favor.
The other team members are Bowlers, these players bowl and they have to bowl a lot (specially in Test cricket that are 5 days long).
It is very rare that a player can both bat and bowl well, these are all rounders. Any team with a good all rounder is automatically at an advantage because they could play an additional batter/bowler without causing an imbalance to either aspects.
What was said about Bhuwan. All good captains have to understand pitch conditions, ground conditions, opposition's strategy and make plans on the fly. Teams do make plans, but a good Captain will always look for advantages to be used (like Captain Russel did).

White skin obsession and liking
The “making of” documentary, _Madness in the Desert,_ is worth checking out. It was quite an effort to get this film made. They literally built an entire apartment building to house the cast and crew, because they were kinda filming out in the middle of nowhere. They hired local villagers to help build authentic village sets, and to be part of the cheering crowds during the match. The British and Indian actors clearly bonded quite strongly. And poor Aamir had to learn his lines on the fly because he was so busy with his duties as producer that he just didn’t have time (and they’re in a modified Awadhi dialect, I believe-so imagine having to learn, say, Bayou Louisiana English on the fly). It’s a fascinating doc. Also, they did originally plan to have two innings in the film, but it was taking so long to film that they shortened it to just one innings. (Side note: I’m Indian-American and grew up playing baseball, so it’s super-weird to me that they say “innings” in cricket even when it’s singular. In baseball, we’d say “one inning.”)

@@harshitsingh2288 it isn't obvious to peeps who don't know cricket. Andrew understood how important spin could be but if he'd thought about the science of it, he'd have realized why the ball was behaving the way it did.
Or you should say new balls don't spin as much as old ones.
Since the old ball's surface is rough, the ball will grip on a dry pitch and produce good turn. Spinners find it easy to grip the old ball than the new ball. For the fast bowlers, the old ball could reverse swing. That means the ball moves in the air towards the shiny side of the ball and deceive the batsman. However, regardless of the condition of the ball, it also depends on how the bowler uses it and the pitch conditions.

A little overview on the caste system that was used in india, or the varna system as called:
People were divided into 4 categories usually based on their lineage and family occupation in olden times
- Brahmin : Priesthood, holy people were at the topmost of the chain, respected and perceived as holy since they knew about spirituality and conducted ceremonies.
- Kshatriya (pronounced: ksh-hat-ree-ya) or the warrior class, these were usually royal family’s sons and relatives, they were the soldiers for the land and came in at 2nd in the caste system
- Vaishya (pro: veh-sh-ya) these were the middle class traders, peasants, businessmen of the land, shopkeepers, artisans, etc that handled the economic situation of the land.
- Shudra (pro: sh-oo-dra)or the untouchables as said, they usually belong to a lineage of odd work such as ragpickers etc, or basically unskilled labourers.
I also want to add, now, with progress this caste system has been abolished :) anyone can work and get jobs anywhere, yes, in some backward rural areas the caste system might still exist, but for urban areas it doesn’t exist, and with time and education i’m sure it will be gone:)

It’s a simple game:
1. There a 11 players on each side. 10 of them get to bat. All 10 batters bat once. When 10 batters are out, their innings comes to a close. Then the other team comes to bat.
2. A run is when a batter one side runs to the other side of the pitch and the batter on the other side runs to this side. If a batter hits the ball and it flies over the ropes without bouncing inside the ground, it’s six runs. If it bounces, it’s 4 runs.
3. Team A bats first(in this case the Brits), set a target number or runs. Team B needs to hit those runs or more to win. This game is being played over 3 days..the real format called Test Cricket is played over 5 days.
4. An “Over” is six pitches by the pitcher(called a Bowler in Cricket). Usually in the shortest format that is most popular today, each side gets 20 overs or 120 (20*6 = 120) legal pitches to score as many runs as possible and the other side has to chase that.
5. There is no concept of 3 strikes in cricket. There is an “Out”. The different ways a batter can be out are :
a. If a batter hits the ball in the air and a fielder catches it, it’s out.
b. If the batter attempts to run and is short of the line on the other side he’s out
C. The ball crashes into the sticks (called Stumps) when the pitches throws(bowls).
d. If the ball hits the batters leg directly when the pitcher pitches and does not touch the bat and the point of impact on the leg was straight in front of the stumps. As in, the ball would have crashed into the stumps had it not hit the batters leg pads. This is a subjective call made by referee.
6. An “foul” equivalent is when the pitcher’s foot is too far out of the pitching plate. This is called a “No-Ball” in cricket. The referee looks at that during the pitching stride of the pitcher. That ball has to be repeated.

Andrew, the reason the ball wasn't spinning initially was because the ball was new. New balls are harder to grip for achieving spin due to the shine. As the ball got old, it was spinning for Kachara.

I remember there were two films released at the same time, Gadar and Lagaan. One was on the nose patriotism and the other was subtle. Although I loved both, I went to watch Lagaan 4 times with seperate group of friends just to enjoy the cricket in second half. It was like watching an actual match with everyone cheering and clapping in theatre. Miss those days.
One shown dark and Harsh reality of Partition(which was not possible back then) another one was good movie with Cricket as theme.

Unlike baseball, cricket has a pitch and on either side of the pitch there is a batsman standing. You can think of em as bases where they run to and fro after hitting the ball to make runs. Unlike baseball the batsman doesn't change but the bowler or you can say pitcher does after making 6 deliveries that is throwing 6 balls
The rules - both sides have 11 players. Players are decided before the game starts and CANNOT be changed mid game. The batting side must always have TWO players on the field. The batting side bats until 10 of the 11 players are out (11th player cannot play alone). All the 11 players both bat and field even though some may be better batter than others. This means a player who is an expert bowler but very bad at batting will also need to bat if everyone else is out. Once a batter is out, he CANNOT bat again. An injured player can still play if he is not out. A 12th player can field or act as a "runner", however, he cannot bat, bowl, or keep wicket.
Swinging the bat or hitting the ball DOES NOT mean anything. A run is scored only if you complete the run to the other side or hit the ball outside the boundary.
You only get out if (1) the bowl (or you) hit the stumps, (2) your body stop the ball from hitting the stumps, (3) the ball is caught by fielder before it hits the ground, (4) a fielder hits the wicket with the ball when you are out of the crease.

After ball loses its shine after 2-3 days of play then the spinner is introduced generally during second innings
The new ball is shiny and slippery so it doesn't spin. When the ball gets weary and rough you get a good grip and it is when it soins. Bhuvan figures that out later

There is another movie that released on the same of Lagaan, its name is Gadar...its part historical and part fictional but also beautiful at the same time...u guys may like it, its not better than Lagaan but still, entertaining and the music of that movie is just mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Somebody who's a third party/ not an Indian isn't going to enjoy the overt patriotism of Gadar. I don't think this is a good recommendation. It does shed a light on communal riots, which is great but Sunny's character isn't one somebody would describe as being subtle or nuanced

I'm looking at the untouchability scene and thinking how this movie would be boycotted out of existence in today's times when all the chauvinists of the country and the govt goons at the centre, the media in the pockets of said goons would band together to criticise Aamir, a Muslim, for throwing light on the caste system of the country branding him a traitor asking him to go to Pakistan even though caste system has been a reality in Indian history. Lots of whitewashing going on in today's times where the upper caste love to pretend all's good and well and that their ancestors never benefitted from India's casteist and classist societal structures

Kachra couldn't spin the ball earlier not because of pitch but because the ball was new and had proper shine as new ball is smooth so one doesn't get revolutions while throwing the ball and hence no drift of the pitch and that's why no spin of ball
