They left out one of the best dance sequences he ever did - two actually - the New Year's Eve dance and the Firecracker tap from Holiday Inn...both of those are just insanely awesome
The person who made the comment, "Can't act, can't sing, is balding, can dance a little." I'm sure had to kick himself for the next 40 some-odd years. Fred Astaire was nominated for an Oscar for his acting ability. People composed songs specifically for him, and he was still dancing circles around kids 40 years his junior in his last movie musical, Finian's Rainbow. The lesson I get out of this is give a person a second or even third chance before you write them off.
I don't get why Astaire is ranked #5 but Judy is ranked #8 - didn't they both gain legendary status in the same medium virtually? Judy's dancing was okay but nothing special like Fred's singing was okay but nothing special. Beat each other to a draw.
John Lingard Maybe because he had a longer career in movies? But frankly, I think rankings like this are pretty silly anyway. Once you get to a certain level of skill and general awesomeness, it all boils down to taste, really. I guess some people love ranking things, but I'd rather just sit back and enjoy all the greats without having to put them in competition! (PS, I adore Fred's singing, but I also think Judy was a better dancer than she usually gets credit for.)
Fred who was too much of a gentleman to ever say which woman were better dancers did say of Judy that she was the quickest study he had ever worked with ... show her a step, she had it ...
