Actually he was the one very nervous when she suggested they dance a little before they came out. She didn't know what he was going to do.
You can see there chemistry, you know all that stuff bout not getting on was rubbish loved these two together .

I was lucky to see Ginger Rogers doing MAME in London in February 1970 and she was still absolutely gorgeous. Couldn't help myself and went to wait for her at the stage door hoping to have her autograph. She was so warm and receptive to me, a starstruck 20-year-old who could hardly believe he was facing a screen legend. I still remember how gracious she was and keep that autograph as a precious gift from a wonderful actress and superb dancer. Dear Ginger!

My partner, aged 13 at the time, was taken to see that production at Drury Lane and still remembers it to this day. He actually saw it from the pit.....couldn't happen today......as his music teacher was in the orchestra. He also recall's Miss Roger's as looking beautiful and brilliant in the show.
So this is 1967.
Fred was 68 (he looks fantastic !!) & Ginger was 56.
So great to see them together again. Wonderful.

Fabulous! Still in sync with one another- note Fred's cue to Ginger to stop the spin and grab his arm. Both of them so smooth they were a true partnership. They seemed surprised and pleased with the audience response. It was well deserved and appropriately given at the Oscars. They both looked great as well.
This was such a moment, so precious and to be still dancing at their age was a pure blessing! So sweet, just LOVED it!

Actually most of the Hollywood stars did the exact same things and had the exact same scandals the ones today do. The only difference is they kept their dirt on the low and there wasn't social media or paparazzi following them around 24/7 to publicize it.
What era??? it was 1967, there was young men being killed in Vietnam, and racism, homophobia, and alot assassinations...yes great era, the 1930s and 1940s, 1950s was the best era in Hollywood, because it was the golden era....by 1967 the golden era has gone and passed by, this was the hippie, free loving, Vietnam era. Stop reaching, every era of people say the same shit. You can't expect things to stay the same, things evolve, times change, And generation are born and people grow, and new technologies come in, it's called moving with the times, and thinking for the future not living, in the past. It's great to look back and remember and reminisce. But to say it was a great era...not really, there was way better eras and great times, after and before. It depends what decade you were born, to people who are in there 30's and 40's, the 1980's and 1990's was the best era because they were kids and teenager's at the time and they had great times for them. But people don't stay the same and have the same fashions and cars, things change.

It was Ginger Roger's idea to do a little something and Fred Astaire was reluctant but came around shortly before they came on and said, "Let's do these few steps.." It brings a lump to my throat. I discovered their films as a teen int he 1970's along with the Warner Bros./Busby Berkeley films and have been a firm fanatic ever since. You don't realize how much you miss people until they are gone. There are no more artists on the planet like these. They were products of their times and I miss them all so, so much!!! Time for a good cry.

He wore black face many times as did most of the stars,young and old of that era.You can't compare what was ok back then to what they consider today. It's not right and Fred Astaire is not racist.

Ginger and Fred are breathtakingly beautiful in their entrance and quick swing step! They are both still so vibrant here. Ginger's blue dress set off her sparkling eyes and all around gorgeous face and figure. Women didn't overdo the plastic surgery back then. No outrageous chipmunk cheeks trout pout lips hairline on top of their heads of today. Thank goodness for the internet as young people have a chance to see the 'Golden Age of Stars'.

The sustained applause indicates how revered these two legends were as a pair and not just by that audience. Imagine ANYTHING like that happening at the awards today. Of course you can't because no two such people exist as the incomparable Fred and Ginger. Much too brief but a great Oscar moment.

Watching this clip - I am totally mesmerized by the insinuation of the dance Mr. Astaire made during his entrance it was pure elegance in motion. I thoroughly love to see him move, and what a delight to see the amazing Ginger Rogers take his side again.

That impromptu little dance that Fred and Ginger did together at the beginning was Ginger's idea and according to her Fred thought it would be too corny,but Ginger told him," Come on. Let's give the folks a thrill" and so they danced. It was a great unplanned moment.

I’m reading Lucille Ball’s autobiography, in which she describes the role Ginger Rogers’ mother played in Lucy’s life, as a mentor. Lucy also dishes on Fred and Ginger’s working relationship. He was a perfectionist and task master. Ginger was a good partner for him because she copied his style - mirrored him - and to help boost his appeal among female fans, on screen she would gaze adoringly at him.
I have so much respect for Fred and Ginger. I still have a lot of their memorabilia RIP.

They make their entrance (practiced no doubt) and safely make the podium, when she flubs reading the cue cards! Ever full of grace, Fred steps up quickly and covers for her ... a lifetime of life lessons in only a flash: care for your partner, your glory is her, standing beside you.
And then, seeing her through the brief misstep, he passes the lead back to her.
These two perfectionists complemented each other in every way that two people could, at least on film and in dance.
in an interview with ginger,she explains how she had asked fred to do a small dance when they came out. he declined,at first, but agree at the last moment,probably not wanting to dissappoint her,and the world,as well. so, he said to giger,let's do it. they entered,separately, walked toward each other, and fred astaire choreographed a 20 second dance which caught the american public unprepared, totally charmed ginger rogers,and brought down the house. watching it now,at age 75, still brings tears and joy to me,as if seeing it when it spontaneously took place, as it did to bob hope,who had to pay his own tribute to them both. seeing ginger react with such pleasure, unexpectedly feeling the response of this live audience of hollywood royalty, is an indescribable joy. it suddenly brought alive these two consummate artists and the times they were a part of,times of depression,untold hardship and unrelenting suffering, balanced, even in the smallest way, by fred astaire and ginger rogers. it's hard to separate the love from the gratitude the american people will always feel for these two rarities. they gave all and more, and asked for nothing in return. they didn't have to ask.

I wish they could have made another movie together after The Barkleys of Broadway. It wouldn't have had to be a dance movie, either. I love seeing them together. They could have made a comedy and dropped in few Easter eggs from past movies for fun.
I met Ginger along with James Mason and Fay Kanin in 1983 at the Dallas premier of the restored George Cukor film, "A Star is Born". She was gorgeous and delightful. Fred and Ginger still bring joy to countless fans, old and new, around the world. They were true American treasures.

Fred called Ginger "my bsby" this is 34 yrs since their first dance together. But I think she was only about 18 or 19 when they first met. She was just a "baby"

This was 34 years since their first dance on film. They had dated in New York City from the fall of October 1930 until Ginger left for Hollywood in the summer of 1931.

I think out of all of Fred's subsequent dance partners I always go back to Ginger because she just looked so good with him.
Although some of his later partners might have had stronger backgrounds in Dance, Ginger had tremendous personal charisma and a special undeniable chemistry with Fred which made dancing with him look
like an absolute blast. She was also a very versatile actress.

Claude Lelouch said in French that the other guy, Pierre, deserved the Oscar as much as he did. Very classy.
You cannot see this here but Fred actually grabbed Ginger's hand immediately and nuzzled it gently when they went to the side of the stage as the second gentleman accepted his award.
It's really a pity this angle doesn't cover it, it's so cute and tender and like that's just how they naturally were. :) ♡

Well I suppose I have not watched any of their films for years, but Yes, still think they were great dancers..
I love this clip. I watch it a lot because it is quite joyful. I notice one thing every time - Fred seems to be saying something to Ginger (perhaps “Let’s do a little dance”?) but Ginger seems absorbed in soaking up the applause that she doesn’t hear him. Thus, she is completely surprised. I always think that if she were listening or heard him this lovely moment would have been longer.

Obviously Fred Astaire knew what he was going to do...but the fact that Ginger Rogers didn't, and managed not to land flat on her butt and look AMAZING dancing with him? That's true talent!!!!
The amazing part was almost everything you see there was ad-lib up until the reading of the awards! As a matter of fact Ginger asked Fred, and he only agreed a few minutes before they went on air!
Magnificent. If the presentation at hand is for the film "A Man For All Seasons (1966)," then this videotape is from April 1967. I previously saw this on kinescope and was happy to even have that. Fred would be 67 here (68 a month later), Ginger about 55-56, and when they do their turns on the floor, there is no time lapse. You not only gasp a breath of surprise, you can faintly hear one or two shouts of glee in the audience that they resume right back into form, as if no time had passed at all. What a gorgeous time capsule.
Astaire filmed his last dancing television special in 1968 with Barrie Chase [ the only sequence posted on You Tube is the Oh You Beautiful Doll number ] and of course, Finian's Rainbow was filmed with Coppola directing in 68 as well. Fred's moves are fluid here; I believe that he did a brief dance routine on the Oscars during the show broadcast the following year as well.
At Last!! What a wonderful 'classic' moment. Listen to the ROAR of that crowd. And how about Candice Bergen all the way down the aisle to accept only to have to turn around when she sees Claude onstage. LOL! She told me years later she thought Claude was still in the press room.

Yes, they were friends (and were sitting next to each other in the audience). She had just acted in his film Vivre Pour Vivre, which would released later in 1967.

Like Frank Sinatra said in his narration for "That's Entertainment" you can wait around, but you'll never see the likes of these two again. Astaire, in a series of quick dance movements, re-creates the charm of ten years of RKO and MGM films with Rogers.
I agree. I'm sure at least half the audience was on their feet for this (today they stand for ANYTHING). Surprisingly the camera never shows the audience reaction, instead lingering on Fred & Ginger who appear overwhelmed with the attention. True, they were getting older. But they were still young enough for one to hope they would find a vehicle to reunite in. No one, not even they, knew this would be their final 'dance' together for the camera.
JerseySurvivor If Astaire and Rogers were presenting an Oscar to Robert Bolt for A Man For All Seasons, made in 66, this must have been the 67 Oscar ceremony. Astaire was about to film his last musical show in 68 with Barrie Chase and Coppola's Finian's Rainbow, released the same year. Consequently, Fred was still very limber as a dancer; he was also dancing on Hollywood Palace shows during that time period.
