Mr Fred Astaire was in his 50 when he did this solo number of Piano Dance in the 1950 Paramount Pictures' Let's Dance. But invariably he had still performed his dance routine with placidity, stability, incredulity, infallibility, and vivacity.Under the affable and nimble supervision of his long-time dance associate Mr Hermes Pan and with the agreeable and notable music of Mr Tommy Chambers ( Mr Astaire's real-life accompanist ) and Mr Van Cleave, Mr Astaire had brilliantly demonstrated his eclectic foot-steps,his elastic slow-to-fast movements, his frolic piano-playing,his athletic jumping-off-the piano, and his histrionic running-off-the scene. Mr Fred Astaire's production numbers ( solo or couple ) in all his classic musical movies can be vividly characterized as ecstatic, frenetic, and charismatic.

Leslie Caron once said dance was playing with music, and no one did it better than Fred. And here, he's just given free reign to play with it however he wants, and it's sheer joy. Have to crow that as a kid mesmorized by these films, I danced thru the basement once, and came up with riding over chairs all by myself, thinking, wow, that was a cool move. Then a year or two later, I saw this and realized you can't out cool Fred. He's already there. Plus, everytime I see this number I can't help wondering who got the cats to race out of the piano like that on cue, and how. Or do I want to know?

I have to join the numbers who say that they've never seen this before. I can't find the superlatives to express my utter amazement. I was discovered as a dancer in highschool and when I became of some good I wore a tee shirt that depicted Mr Astaire in a top hat, all the time. If I'd seen this I would've probably hung up my slippers, sooner. (Glad I didn't!)

Tommy was Fred's rehearsal pianist for several movies in Mr. Astaire's career. I understand he weighed 138lbs fully dressed and stood at 5ft9in tall. I was out in Hollywood last week and saw his footprints in Grumman's Chinese Theater. From the imprint left in the cement, Mr. Astaire had very large hands (long, long fingers) but his feet were extremely narrow for a man. Gene Kelly's feet are two slabs over from Fred's and Gene's feet were basically the same length but much wider than Fred's. However, Gene's hand prints were much smaller than Mr. Astaire's.

I have an article about his longtime friend and choreographer Hermes Pan. Unfortunately, Memories magazine had a too short run. You can find copies on eBay. The article told of Pan coming up with this routine. He and Fred Astaire liked a wow finish. It took some convincing for Fred to walk on those chairs. Many years later Fred called Pan to his home. He showed him the video of Michael Jackson's moonwalk.
