      @@2Majesties Gene Kelly was the athletic dancer..He had muscles. Fred was a a beautiful, lithe perfectionist. He rehearsed non-stop to make everything look so easy!
      Actors used to say that if A female dancer working on a musical, you could tell which dancer she was working with by looking at her. Gene Kellys used to have such athletic moves, his dancers would have bruises. Feds dancers would just have really sore or bloody toes. Not from him stepping on them..bc he worked everyone (including himself) so hard!!!

    Fred Astaire was a genius. My first movie crush. I wanted to dance with him so bad. When he died I fell on the floor in tears. He is forever missed. There will never be another Fred Astaire.

      Absolutely! You're right he was the best, he had enormous class and true talent, his style of dancing and singing awesome with such ease. Fred's ability to transition smoothly between the dance and the flow of the dialogue without missing a beat. He is a true genius, indeed, someone like Nikolas Tesla, "The Genius Who Lit the World."

    He's my ancient God
    (And he was underrated.. still is...)
    He was so humble and shook his nose when people praised him ; - ;

    • @maya8443
      @maya8443 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He was everything you said but underrated NEVER, he was well recognized then and even now. He has been named the best dancer/entertainer of all time. Have you seen the honors and awards Fred was awarded? Someone who is underrated doesn't get that kind of recognitions. While many actors,/dancers that were part of the Golden age of Hollywood aren't mentioned at all anymore but Fred Astaire is still very well regarded and recognized dancer today.

      Although it is hard to believe... in his very early youth... as a stage performer with his sister Adele...she was regarded as the better of the duo... but Fred matured and caught up with her... eventually...surpassing his sister's fame when she retired from the stage and he went on to become one of the most famous film stars of the mid-20th century.

    I LOVE Michael Jackson. I think he was the greatest performer in the world.
    Fred Astaire was the best DANCER EVER. I get chills watching footage of him. He incorporated everything into his dancing; the way he walked, the movement of his hands, EVERYTHING!!! And I believe that is one of the things that Michael Jackson saw in Astaire. BECOME the music. BECOME the song. BECOME the dance.

    25 years ago in Munich, I persuaded ( forced ) my wife to watch Swing Time and Top Hat with me after I discovered she had never seen Fred Astaire. Afterwards, she thanked me for showing her a true genius at work. We went on, over the years, to watch all of his work. She was a convert from day one.

      I'm new to vintage films and finished Swing Time a week ago. One of his bests!
      I can't find most of his films however so I'm waiting for Top Hat (which I've been dying to watch the most) that I ordered to arrive, and Follow the Fleet.
      I'm aiming to watch all of his films if possible~

    In Top Hat, they let Ginger pick that dress (last minute) that is all fluffy with feathers!!. Fred said that every time he spun her he got feathers in his mouth, his eyes & the dress shed, onto the floor so much,, it became a bit dangerous !! 👣💨🕳⚠ After that, Fred was always consulted over talks of her dress choices.👗👚

    • @maya8443

      Absolutely, Eleanor Powell was her equal in the dance floor. Both masters of their talent.

    • @DLee1923
      @DLee1923 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      💕 I read an interview where Fred had intimated that he didn't feel he & Eleanor Powell were well matched because she had a "man style" of dancing. I thought she was perfect in all her dancing, but I never could embrace that "good feeling" I'd get when I watched Fred & every other female dance partner he costarred with. It's not that she didn't have a femininity about her, it was just that there was something male-ish about her body movement & mannerisms. I think Fred may have been a little intimidated by her as well. After all, he was aging (although still a wonderful dancer) and she seemed to have almost stronger masculine type power moves. I don't know. I felt she was much better suited playing it solo ! 👍🏼😊

    • @patricemoran7469
      @patricemoran7469 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DLee1923 I agree that she had a very strong 'athletic' dance style and although their fantastic tap routine to 'Begin the Beguine' is considered one of the very best ever...
      overall...I liked her solo performances best..
      God bless the both of them and their incredible talent.

    • @patricemoran7469
      @patricemoran7469 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      PS...Fred was about 40-41 when Broadway Melody of 1940 was made.

    • @esmeephillips5888
      @esmeephillips5888 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DLee1923 This may be true up to a point, and both Fred and Ellie had said before their teaming that their styles might be incompatible. Nevertheless, their duets- 'Jukebox Dance' (jitterbug), 'I Concentrate on You' (ballet) and the two 'Begin the Beguine' dances (Latin and tap)- were a generous serving in what one reviewer called the 'dancingest' musical yet produced.
      Fred could never resist a challenge. Eleanor was his toughest, for ingenuity and versatility as a choreographer and vitality as a hoofer.
      The results are a fascinating test of his reputation. BM40 is unlike anything else in his filmography: a bridge between the glorious if formulaic Ginger cycle and the extra inventiveness Feinstein speaks of in his middle age. Powell's pressure opened new vistas for him. I can think of no other case of two supreme maestri competing and collaborating on a musical as those two did.

She conveyed the impression... in all their collaborations... that dancing with Fred was an absolute out-of-body experience. Although Rita.. Cyd..and others might have had more extensive dance training...Ginger was a quick learner...and I agree with Fred that she looked the best with him.
