    Good review, thank you. The 'Ohmage' is called "impedence." The AT are only 38 ohms vs. the 200 for your DT770 Pros. But the good news is that the DT770 Pros come in three different impedence ratings and each has a different cable:
    - 32 ohm with short straight cable
    - 80 ohm with long straight cable
    - 200 ohm with coiled long cable
    I recommend the 80 ohm version. I have them and they are killer! The long straight cable is fantastic as well!
    Hope this helps!

    Also not the best cans for tracking guitars with the open back speakers. I actually like the 990’s for mixing and mastering at my desk so the the coil cable lets me move around the studio. I don’t run into issues during tracking or recording because I use a closed back pair with a long straight cord for that.

  • @TheShinyShow

    Bit late to the party, but I use the coil cable most of the time. It is fairly short so there's not loads of spare lead about my desk and chair, but I'm not welded to the spot if I want to wheel over to get my guitar or stand up. If I put a long cable on, the cable ends up on the floor and can get stuck on things.

      Totally agree. I have the DT990 600 Ohm version which have like two meters long cable or something and that is in a pile on the floor beside my char which I always need to watch out for not rolling over and damage.

    usually the more Ohms you have, the more difficult will be to make your headphone's driver move or vibrate, so you will require more power for this. Something like a portable DAC-Digital to Analog converter and/or a portable Amp.
    To get the best listening experience from your headphones, use some sort of amplification if the ohms are higher than 32.

      @@assloader it needs more power to work good but its always a better sound stage and clarity if we try to compare it even with the lesser impedance headphones generally with the same model, now even the impedance has been lowered to give to better soundstage in the newer beyerdynamics set of headphones so you can directly connect it through your pc or laptop

    No idea what people see in m50x I had a pair also had 770pro 250ohm and simply can say that beyerdynamic is way better in any term of usage. I'm of course fan of open headphones that's why all tested closed backs some how are sold.

    Back in the day they had these things called telephones which pretty much proved the value of the coiled wire. Doesn’t get tangled and is short until you stretch it.

      @JoelWilliamHarrison  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm familiar with this device you speak of Fred.
      A telephone was normally mounted to the wall or had a heavy base though.
      I don't want to be stretching the cable while trying to play or record, it's just annoying.
      The coil design works in some cases but not for me in this instance.

      @@JoelWilliamHarrison there are two types of people, the very aware, who notice the weight and feel of the coiled cord , and how far extended the cord is. Then there are the unaware, who don’t notice the weight and appreciate the cord won’t let you yank against the plug when you extend it too far. And so there must be accommodations for everyone

    Actuallly dt 990 pro 250 ohm version has a very high resistance of 250 ohm which will need a very long length of wire so that the electrons will collide with the ions in the wire many times and produce a high resistance. thats why they have a very long cable which is coiled.

    • @stoatinstaunerbrewing6107
      @stoatinstaunerbrewing6107 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The resistance is caused by the number of winds/thickness of the copper wire coil in the drivers. The cable will actually have a very low resistance.

    hey man, audio technicas are 32 ohms and dont require an amp to run, kind of meant to be used off your phone, 250 ohm headphones on the other hand wont ever sound as good as they're meant to without the proper power from a dac and amp. its not that they dont sound as nice its that they arent set up correctly

    • @JoelWilliamHarrison
      @JoelWilliamHarrison  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're correct re ohms. Learning as I go!
      But to be honest it came down to the cord and practicality for me.
      I said the AT sounded brighter/harsher but not necessarily in a good way.
      Usage was via my UA Arrow, never had an issue with either model being loud or defined enough.

      @@JoelWilliamHarrison Yea ,It's not necessarily true that if you have a 250 Ohm headphone that they need a dedicated amp.

  • @paradoxic1888

    I have both the M50X's and DT990's. Honestly, sound quality is more important to me than practicality. The DT990's are rolled off on the low end and peaks at the top end which is a bit annoying having been used to the more pronounced low-end curve on the M50X's. On the other hand, The DT990's have a much more open stage, so you can quickly pick apart the assortments of instruments in a track, while the M50X's kind of just mushes everything together. Don't get me wrong, the M50X's are amazing headphones, but they've passed their sell-buy date and I was forced to get a new pair, which is why I went with the 990's. I use Pedalboard software on my computer to first of all fix the EQ curve with a plugin, as well as run a crossover plugin to get the sound you'd get from listening on speakers. If it wasn't for the software, I wouldn't have gone for the DT990's, because I just love bass too much, but the software fixes that problem. I must say, with the software running, the bass response is so clean and tight, and I don't regret my choice, because now I get the best of both worlds. I just hope to God the cable lasts a couple of years. I freak out just thinking about it. Oh just FYI, the M50X's are definitely not 250 ohm, more around 38 ohms, so you'll need an amp for the DT990's or you won't hear it at it's full potential.

    • @iduz631
      @iduz631 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What pedalboard software do you use? I’m after sound quality as well and I’ve seriously been considering the 990’s for a soundstage upgrade over my M50x’s. On top of that, what would you suggest for the crossover settings?

    • @paradoxic1888
      @paradoxic1888 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@iduz631 I see many well-known producers still using the M50X's. While not so much soundstage, the low-end is top-notch. Great for EDM. My DT990's got water damage, so I bought the DT900 Pro X's instead. Best value for money and has a detachable cable, but it has less low-end, so you'll need to train your ear. Similar with the DT990's. If you're going to produce with headphones, software like Goodhertz CanOpener is a must as it creates crossover to the room of your choice. Toneboosters Morphit is also good to balance out the EQ curve for your headphones model, but if you train your ear you don't need it. I've seen studios switching to crossover software so they can produce on headphones and little needs to be tweaked on monitors after the process.
