Mike, straight up, if I ever find the courage and the finance to jump from Leica M analog & digital to Medium Format Pentax 67 -- I will credit it to you and your journey. I ain't no groupie. Ain't rolling like that. I am a scholar, a Theologian, a career military man, and a man who believes in giving a Brother their do. Mike Gray, you are a gifted Brother. Not in just what you do but in how you communicate it. The sharing, the style and voice you create to chronicle your journey is a Blessing, benefit, and Storyteller inspiration to anyone with a camera in their hand, a poem in their heart, or a vision in their minds eye. Continued happiness and success to you and yours my young Brother. Be Blessed, Doc Chaps PS: I'm always going to pick for the faster glass. 90mm 2.4! I'm a Leica fanboy. Noctilux all the way. 50mm f1.2 -- 50mm f0.95 -- 75mm f1.25 plus the Summilux 28mm f1.4. M11, M3, iiif, M9 Monchrom, SL2-S.

Your videos sent me on a hunt through Tokyo for your exact setup (the wood grip being the hardest to source), the 90 and 45 especially after I saw your editorial shoot, had to cop the 105 recently and couldn’t be happier. Love your content Mike keep it coming

I had a similar experience too haha. I started with the body after seeing Mikes videos and grabbed it with a 105 due to people online recommending it. Then his video with his Tyler shields convinced me that I wanted a 90mm leaf shutter lens haha. And then I finally got a wood handle last summer after realizing how uncomfortable it felt to carry on my neck only and it made a world of a difference. The way it balances in the hand with the grip is so worth it imo. And that 45 might be my favourite lens on the system now. It’s so versatile and also allows for some amazing compositions if you choose to shoot 35mm panoramic style photos with it.

MIke, like your work a lot! Thumbs up, man! I am shooting digital medium format (Fuji GFX) and I use a lot of Pentax' 6x7 glass as their image circle is large enough to cover the large sensor of the GFX and there is absolutely no vignetting. And although I also like the 105/2.4, my alltime star is the 90/2.8 for two reasons: one, you can get one ft. closer with the 90 and two, it's also much lighter. And when it comes to image quality, the 90 - in my opinion - is on the same level as the 105...

And the 90 has got s leaf shutter in it. Which has turned out not to be as big a thing as I thought it would be when I first got the 90 and the 165, but I still. I like those lenses a lot. It's nice to see I'm not the only one who thinks the 90 is just fine. I know the 200 is a wicked good lens, too. But same deal. It's been 30 years and I'm still blown away by how good the 165 is.

I love the 105 as it was my first Pentax lens. I recently got the 90mm LS lens but haven’t put any reps in yet to comment on whether I like it more. I will say that I do like the distance the 105mm requires as I typically am using my 67 setup from a bit further back and I love the background separation it creates(even stoped down).
One of the most underrated lenses I feel like on the system is the 200mm f/4, it definitely requires a lot more room to work with but produces some fantastic results. The trickiest part is trying to avoid any camera shake because at that focal length it’s definitely a lot more visible. Also it’s goddam gigantic, but if someone is carrying a Pentax 67, chances are they are used to having people stare at their giant setup to begin with 😂

  • @AdrianBacon

I shoot a lot of Fujica GW690 (6x9 neg) with a 90 and like that for environmental portraits. It's similar to a 90 on 6x7 but a little more negative space on the long edge. For headshots, I like to shoot 4x5 sheet with a Fuji 300 f/5.6 (it's a 4x5 reducing back on an 8x10 view camera) and I usually shoot at f/11 or f/16, then if I want a little more environment, I keep the same 300 and change out to 8x10 sheet. I know that sounds like a really long lens, but with such a huge negative, on 8x10, 300mm is equivalent to about a 40mm on full frame 35mm film, and on 4x5 gives the same field of view as an 80mm on 35mm film.

As a Mamiya 67 shooter my preference for portrait work is the 140mm macro. When I have the space to use it, I just love the separation in the image, it almost has a 3D pop. My 90mm comes a close second.

Building a high-quality setup for that can be quite the technical journey, especially for medium format.

Shocked that you the 90mm isn't the lens... but had to watch the video to know that you favor that one... yes, the 90mm is better. 105mm is great but it's not the 90mm. Also, the Hassy murdered the Pentax on that shoot! (I SAID WHAT I SAID hahahahah)

I understand the situation of the girl, she had hard time in the traffic, car accident, but if she is not fit for the shoot she should have told it. She was straight an a-hole, Gray tried to ease the tention but she was not cooperative at all. In these cases it is better to say just eff it and don't shoot. I feel for you bro.

Mike has an easy way about him, but the title adopting the Pentax 105mm as the "best lens Pentax ever made" is such pure bullshit that I am compelled to pull back the curtain. (Wizard of Oz ref for the uneducated.) 12 minutes, and he has no objective statement of what makes the lens "the best". The standards of such measure are usually sharpness, contrast, possible depth of field, or for some non-Japanese who don''t know better, "bokah". "I like it", is one of those subjective references used by those who don't have a clue. I'll offer a definition of "best" for this lens: "I paid $900 for a 50+ old used lens which 10 years ago I could have purchased in any number I wished for less than $150 each, so it has to be extra good, right?" So, let's take an objective look at the 105mm. It was one of the original Pentax 67 lenses designed around 1966. It was redesigned around 1970 to lose the thorium doped lens element after such lenses (there were many) were labelled "radioactive". This made no significant change to lens performance. Apart from more modern lens coatings as that technology improved, no other performance change in 55 years. So, not a "high tech" lens. Resolution. On par with other Pentax lenses of its day. Not bad, but not close to later designs using modern optical glass. Contrast. The same. Depth of field. The 2.4 maximum aperture yields very restricted depth of field wide open, but if that's your goal, the 165mm 2.8 is even more so, and optically, a superior lens as well. Great for portraits. As used by Mike here, why not. Used for headshots as many on YT do, forget it. It's about the 35mm focal perspective of a 50mm lens. Too close for close portraits, unless you like your models to exhibit "camel nose". So, why was the 105mm made? Marketing. It was the fastest medium format lens made in its day. And, Pentax advertised that fact unmercifully. It was the "kit lens" of its day. Is it a bad lens? Not at all. Frankly, it's hard to find a 67 lens which is "bad", but some are better than others. Is it the best "normal" focal length lens for the 67? Not by the usual standards. The 90mm 2.8 is significantly better optically, but a bit wider. The 135mm is a bit better and longer, much closer focussing. The late-coming 100mm Macro will optically blow them all off and leave change. So what is the 105mm best at? Really nothing. But, if you only have one lens, and you hang out with YT hipsters, using your Pentax 67 and 105mm as proof of club membership cannot be beat.
