    I have the “SMC” version. My favorite aspect of this lens isn’t the bokeh, it’s the insane sharpness and contrast! :)

    • @RichardSilvius
      @RichardSilvius 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seconded! I was so surprised by the sharpness when I got my first shots back taken with the SMC 105. I'm sure the older ones are great as well, but I haven't tried them. I think my favorite Pentax 67 lens is the 45mm though.

    • @ribsy
      @ribsy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yea there is a reason the SMC is so pricey!

    • @ribsy

      even the old one is fairly sharp

      @@ribsy That last 105mm made by Pentax was exactly the same as the first one from 1967, except that it got an external appearance change to more modern system styling and a couple of improvements to the lens coatings as that technology improved over 40 years. As far as I know, Pentax almost never did a running improvement to the optical design of a current lens. Rather, they would bring out a new replacement lens, such as the 165mm 2.8 replacing the discontinued 150mm 2.8. The exception I know was in 1986, when the 300mm 4.0 got a name change and a very slight optical modification.

      @@randallstewart175 Thanks for sharing your insight! Some say coating makes a difference (to contrast for example), but I am not an expert. I have just discovered this great camera and lens and am just learning photography.

    Thanks for your awesome videos! I just picked up a late model 105 f/2.4 and tested it quickly (via the Pentax 67 to 645 adapter) on my 645Z digital body. Holy Nirvana!! What a drop dead gorgeous lens, razor sharp even wide open and phenomenal bokeh, even by Pentax’s high standards. It was tricky at first because I instinctively reached for the adapter to change aperture but am getting used to having to cheat forward. It was great in manual mode on the 645Z, and for Aperture priority (Av mode), I customized the front dial to set ISO and the green button to get me into Auto-ISO mode, and that works great for me. Cheers and Happy Holidays 🎄

      It's funny because I've never heard anyone compare this lens to a "4x5 look" until today and now I've seen two people say it. This comment honestly has me wondering if people that say this have actually shot large format. What exactly is a "4x5 look" ??? haha

    I tried out the 105mm on my video and didn't miss focus with it. I have the 90mm LS now and I've missed focus on it once terribly, but yea overall it's not too bad to focus with. I want to get the SMC 90mm 2.8 though cause it's the smallest, lightest, and I think has the closest focus distance of the P67 lenses in the lineup. Also, the 90mm 2.8 SMC is cheaper than the Takumar 105 and they both look good from what I've seen. Dope to see you got yours back kicking at 100%!

    Great lens! I suspect that a relatively simple design (6 elements in 5 groups without, I think, any fancy aspherical elements) and a 9 blade aperture help with that lovely bokeh. Would be interesting to do some bokeh tests at a range of f-stops and and lens to subject distances to get a good idea of what it can do. The foreground blur is also worth looking for - I have found it to be different in character sometimes to the background blur. If you don't like its look you can compose differently. Great work! keep it up.

    About F/2.4 I agree with you. I think people blow their load over bokeh way too much. In the real world you shoot someone at f2.4 and only the eye is in focus and everything else is a blur, it's not exactly the most flattering portrait look but at least the bokeh balls look amazing! ha!

    The 165 f/2.8 is an option but I don't use it much. For a portrait lens there are plenty of modern options that can give similar extreme bokeh. And if you're a pixel peeper the 165 gets a bit funkier than the 105. The 55 f/4 is great, almost to modern lens standards. It's a bit boring but if you're doing landscapes it can't be beat, even by Hasselblad's 50mm.

      Oh shoosh...this is a mechanical medium format camera. If you were to compare its quality in digital it would be a fuji gfx50s for $7k plus with a comparable lens. Quality film cameras have been horribly underpriced since the mid-2000's when most people didn't want theirs anymore, and now that they've (quite rightly) come back into popularity, people want to be able to still pick up fantastic cameras & pin sharp lenses for a few hundred bucks, and whinge when they're more in line with where they should be. You had your chance & supply and demand is a concept you clearly haven't heard of. And so what if influencers are driving prices up? If you really wanted one, you'd have bought one by now.
