The best recording of this piece. I was a professional clarinetist in the SF Bay area, and I studied with Lauret Goldberg. Performed this a couple times. Original instruments bring out the true sounds. Bravo, Bravi.
Wish Schumann had composed more piano concertos. The greatness of this is on par with the best from Beethoven and Mozart! Also it’s surprising that the early piano is already such an amazing instrument! Glad to hear what it used to sound like!

Utterly amazing! I’ve known this piece for years, studied it thoroughly, prepared it (although never actually performed it yet), and this performance brought out so many details that I knew were on the page but never heard in performance. The subtleties of the musical dialogues and undercurrents that are usually buried in massive sound were sparklingly clear. I might disagree with a few musical decisions made by the pianist and conductor, but the sheer joy in this performance offset any tiny quibbles. Schumann was at his best in small and intimate works, especially his songs and piano suites, and this finesse was so evident here. And I’ve never had so much fun in the second movement. It reminded me of the gentle humor in Kinderszenen, especially in the subtle countermelodies that Schumann loved. It was so enjoyable to hear a performance where I didn’t feel that I was being musically yelled at with bombast and a barrage of sonic blaring. The finesse and lighthandedness of this performance are a model for others.

The Freiburger Barockorchester (FBO), with conductor Pablo Heras Casado and Alexander Melnikov at the pianoforte, performs Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54 - the sole piano concerto that Schumann composed. On account of its many Romantic elements, Schumann's piano concerto is considered exemplary amongst the Romantic concerts. As early as 1833, Robert Schumann (1810 - 1856) had toyed with writing a piano concerto in A minor. In 1841 he wrote his single-movement “Phantasie” in A minor. The short piece did not fare well with publishers, and Schumann was unable to sell it. In 1845, Schumann reworked and expanded the fantasy into a piano concert of three movements. The premiere of the "Piano Concerto in A minor" was held in Dresden on December 4, 1845, to great success. The conductor was Ferdinand Hiller, and the difficult piano part was taken on by Schumann’s wife Clara, an extraordinary piano virtuoso. The Freiburger Barockorchester (“Freiburg Baroque Orchestra”) was begun with a spontaneous idea that has since developed into a unique, musical success story. On New Year's Eve some 30 years ago, music students in Freiburg decided to form an orchestra dedicated exclusively to historically-informed performance practice, played on period instruments. Antique Erard. A French piano. Note the narrow tail. The performance of the first movement was very self-indulgent as regards tempo and rubato. And I wish he would sit still.
You can see Erard written on it. Not so authentic since it's French. I guess Streicher would have been a better choice but I'm still very happy with this upload!
@@Johannes_Brahms65 Why not so authentic? Weren't there Erard pianos in Swizerland or Germany also in the first half of the 19th century? The full "authenticity" would be to have the Concerto played on the piano on which Schumann composed it! But that wasn't and never has been the composers' aim. They wanted their concertos to be played as much as possible in as many places and countries as possible.
This is a fabulous recording, full of fresh insights, but one thing puzzles me. Melnikov clearly has looked at Schumann's metronome markings for the second and third movement, observes them, and completely transforms the outlook of these movements. Why has he not done so for the first one?

Slower or faster? BTW, rip it and almost transparently you can adjust the tempo without any harm using VLC app. I swear by it. So, the question slower or faster is relevant, so I can get what you mean by playing a rip of it in VLC at the adjusted temp. ;)
