The magic of Hélène Grimaud, is that she is a mixture of very high intelligence, incredible sensitivity, and a big amount of talent. Not one single note isn’t lived, thought, and felt. She lives the present moment like no other. And the orchestra is fabulous…
Incidentally the qualities you attribute to Hélène are characteristic of a good portion of the native French population high intelligence and sensitivity. This is counter balanced by French flaws such excessive dialectism (everything is a discourse of words), and a lack of lyricism (replaced by feeling and impressionistic sound). You are right she has talent who wouldn't at that level but she is also not among the top virtuosi her technique allows her to get through this but not always with good tone and articulation. Mainly she has a flat finger technique and that always lead to that result. Overal her technique is her biggest weakness. @@ericastier1646 Well your biggest strength is obviously that you're French, and her biggest strength is that she can do all variations of piano scales in the major and minor, as well as all the fortifying Baroque pieces, as well as playing the essence of all Romantic composers, and even revealing to us, some hidden times, the highly competent rendition of all 32 Beethoven Sonatas... @@briananderson8428 You are very presumptuous in your comment. First, why do you assume that my only area of competency to have a right to comment on her pianism is because i am French ??? I am a pianist, i play all 24 Chopin Etudes and have studied music all my life and heard many world class pianist live or in masterclasses. Second there is no significant difference between a 'critique' and a criticism. The first word is borrowed from the French, the second is an anglicism. Third you seem to imply only pianists who have similar renown as her are authorized to criticize her interpretation. You are wrong from A to Z. I have heard enough professional pianists many of them my personal friends asking me for my inputs to their interpretation to know my input is not far off the mark. This a common trope on TH-cam people reply to critiques assuming the person who wrote it has no competency and probably knows nothing about the subject and then suggest them to shush up. Guess what you are trespassing in a field you do not know and think you can define rules ? It's you who needs to refrain before making wild assumptions about other people that you do not know. Last, anyone has the right to make a critic even those without special competency.
Two days ago I saw Ms. Grimaud perform this live with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Sitting in the fifth row I watched in awe this piano virtuoso play with incredible emotion and technical prowess that without question puts her at the top of all modern day pianists. I have been listening to her play for many years but nothing compares to seeing her perform live. I feel blessed to have witnessed such perfection!
The first and so far only time I saw her live was also with the Cincinnati Symphony 9 years ago, playing Brahms' first concerto. I will never forget the magic that it was. You're right- nothing compares to seeing her live. I miss Cincinnati and the CSO so much. I studied there for two years.
Richard meth, and I had the privilege of seeing and hearing Helene at Carnegie Hall in NYC two weeks ago. She was incredible…..five curtain calls and four encores. I agree with you that she is indeed near or at the top of today’s classical pianists
And just last week, 4/19/23, I again had the privilege of seeing her live at the Disney Center in Los Angeles. It was one of those rare transcendent experiences. Helene and the audience were at one for the entire program, but most completely for the finale of Bach’s Chaconne. When the last note sounded, the audience, as one, rose to their feet with thunderous applause and shouts of acclimation. This continued through four curtain calls and three encores. There is no doubt that even as Helene gets older, she continues to bring her unique musical interpretation to all the pieces of her repertoire. In my opinion, she continues to be one of the top pianists in the world.
Your comment surprises me a bit. I don't want to start a argument, i have studied in conservatory and seen and heard many many virtuosi pianists. It should be obvious that although she is a great musician her technique is not that of a virtuosi, her technique is wrong, she plays with flat fingers and looses tone constantly and it's easy to hear her struggling in slightly difficult passages and her endurance is also not great. Now i am aware that 99.9% of the general audience will not notice these things but when you've spend most of your life at the piano and with other pianists, this does not need much debate, it's obvious.

Hélène Grimaud, my favorite pianist. Beautiful woman. An angel of delicacy and grace with God's spark. Mrs. Hélène, please play until the end of the world if you have enough strength. Thanks to your music, the world becomes better and faith in people returns.

She is my top piano player together with Horowitz. Both talented beyond any limits, Grimaud more sophisticated, Horowitz more spontaneus. Grimaud is Bach, Horowitz was Scarlatti. The third one is Marta Argerich. Marta is like Liszt on steroids. The queen of the piano sound. She can rip the whole orchestra apart with her pinky finger alone. She can play sweet as the first flower in the spring. And she can switch one to another in less then second. And people love it. There are many other very good piano players in the world but these three are the most inspiring musical personalities for me.
Helene, Ihre Interpretation ist erhaben!!! Unuebertrefflich!
I visited Robert and Clare Schumann's house in Leipzig to pay my respects to the great maestro. This piece of music is very special to me. I have listened to it all my life and can remember each note and bar. Grimaud's rendering is superb with a fine sensitive touch. Schumann was already suffering from mental illness when he was composing this. The ability to master his depression and sufferings and turn this into a master piece speaks wonders of human achievements.
I enjoyed your comment and am on a similar path, to me Schumann IS the greatest composer of all and i need to go to Leipzig too to pay my homage to him. I have a different perspective than you however on Schumann's mental problems late in his life. I think that he did not have to overcome his so called depressions to compose and like Chopin i take a serious bet that both would never have matured to genius composers as they have without their health problems. It's because the disease itself pushes the mental to extreme sensitivity it develops an ability for hypersensibility and a modified state of conscioucness that becomes propice for reacting to polyphonic music. The stereotype of the sick genius artist has often been detracted but there is a truth to it. Pascal one of the biggest French thinker and mathematician had a bulb in his brain. Mendelsohn had a rare genetic disease, Beethoven had wathever disease it was that turned him deaf (possibly mercure poisoning), :Mozart health couldn't have been the best to die at 37. Glen Gould was autistic or Asperger syndrone. There are composers that seem to have lived perfectly healthy long lives ( Haydn) but they're much less common than they should, there is a correlation.
Schumann is often faulted for his orchestration, but this piece is masterfully orchestrated. It is probably one of my five favorite concerti. Also, Ms. Grimaud is one of the finest pianists in the world.
Few pieces are more iconic of Romanticism than Schumann’s Piano Concerto. So lively and full of emotion yet simultaneously so agile and bright. A great rendition of an iconic piece.

Helene is no doubt one of the greatest pianists nowadays. Her Nordic emotional and intellectual style: while she plays it could be recalling Richter’s playing. As to my own suggest she is on the pianistic Olympus along with such a legends like Richter, Gilles, Rubinschtein, Michelangeli, Gould, Gilda, Argerich.
I do agree. She is a fantastic pianist but not only. If you could listen to her talking in French or in English of her view on life. Or saying with her own words her feeling for maestro Claudio Abbado...It is pure poetry ! She is a comet, having an exigence on herself which makes me feeling so small.
@@jean-francoisbrieuc705I agree with you! She has such an exquisite personality and it is an enjoyment to listen to her, be it on the piano or in an interview etc.
The magic about this piece by Helene is that.... you have to suppress your body from listening to it only once. I am utterly in love with this version, above all.
Schumanns Klavierkonzert is so unique in sound, the phrasing, the tempo, the combination with the pianist, conductor and orchestra is perfect symmetry. The Piano Concerto is a gripping silky melodic tone. WOW! Perfect video filming.

When you hear Schumann's only piano concerto played by these performers you KNOW that life is not fair: Schumann (always a brilliant composer) composed just one piano concerto, Brahms just two and Beethoven just five. Fortunately she was selected to play this magnificent masterpiece with Thomas Hengelbrock and the NDR.
Ms Grimaud plays this as if it was written for her, brilliantly played
Yes for sure! I link her with Martha e Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli

Hélène Grimaud, my favorite pianist. Beautiful woman. An angel of delicacy and grace with God's spark. Mrs. Hélène, please play until the end of the world if you have enough strength. Thanks to your music, the world becomes better and faith in people returns.

This pianist is "one in a million", truly. I could listen forever...even the conductor looked inspired.
There are around 8 billion of us on the planet, so I guess that means 8,000 Hélènes. :)

Who is "Clare"Schumann?
Clara Schumann, I suppose 😉
@@horsthofsass765 Clare Shumann was a cousin of Robert, they plaid harmonica together when they were young...🤣😂
Superlative. She just lets the music the speak no distractions or drama.
True. The only distraction is her exquisite beauty.
Few pieces are more iconic of Romanticism than Schumann’s Piano Concerto. So lively and full of emotion yet simultaneously so agile and bright. A great rendition of an iconic piece.
Thank you very much! 🤩
This is glorious, her rendition of the piano concerto is absolutely epic! The very best of all versions dare I say. Love hearing her all day long.

I was looking for paradise, it is there.
