WTF is Cake? Their sound and vibe is so unique and unquantifiable. They're just so damn specific, and if you didn't grow up in the 90s and early 2000s, I don't think you'll ever truly get them. The pop landscape was really bleak back then, mostly boy bands and nu metal crap. Cake was a true ray of sunshine, a band that truly cared about musicianship and song writing, but was still super appealing to the masses. Along with Beck, they defined a certain 90s alt pop sound that I'll always love. Long live Cake
...I also love a band that really utilises their base player as more than just part of the rhythm section. Bass really is the unsung hero of the band, it plugs away in the background giving depth to the sound and enhancement to the tune, all whilst helping the band stay in rhythm, and the lead guitar/s steel all the thunder. A moment for the base people...please...............Thank you, as you were.
ive never heard of an instrument called a base. I actually play an instrument that sounds similar called the bass, but i haven't ever seen anyone play a base
alex heisel Oh fuck! I can't edit it. Well, take this as a heartfelt apology from someone who deeply respects 'The Bass' player; I admire your work. To anyone else on this board, I retract my spelling ineptitude and apologise profusely on behalf of the lead guitar.
you don't realize how funky (as well as complex) this song is until you see it live, and see how many times the performers change what they're doing-just awesome.
crazy to think I'm just as old as this video, my dad always played their music when i was younger, and a few weeks ago he played this song and it sounded really familiar. In short that sent me down a rabbit hole of their amazing music.
Your telling me... I was there! It was the best concert ever. They played for almost 3 hours! You can see me in this video seccond row on the audience close up. Im the tallest one there! lol
My God... they’re all BAD ASS!!!! I sooo love cake... pure genius ... sounds sooo good live... CAKE = a group of crazy talented musicians.. each n every one of them...
I agree with Martin Cattani, they replicate the studio sound very well, which suggests to me that the studio sessions are pretty authentic...not heavily enhanced...if you know what I mean. This rocks!
Cake is a unique band, with a unique sound. I just heard "Long Line of Cars" on the radio, and knew it was Cake from the first synth notes. Cake=Good :D
. . . Assail him-impale him-with monster-truck force!!! Must be my favorite couplet in a century of popular music . . . and that includes R&H, Porter, Berlin, etc. It’s just so smart-stupid (or is it stupid-smart?), you can even sense the punctuation!
man i love this band !!! Please come to portugal ! we desperately need concerts like this one ! here everyone is just tangled up in coldplay, u2, adele and shit like that and that is just WRONG !! cake is awesome !
the guy who plays horns he s so talented cake rocks thank you guys for being cake nobody plays like you guys do its like rock with a little bit of jazz you guys are the shit
True that man. Me and my friends were driving through Joshua Tree, hitting 70 mph in the middle of the night, blasting "The Distance" the whole way. Great night.
I just came from listening to an old song from a band called Alive and Kicking who had a one hit called "Tighter, Tighter". It has this single trumpet thing in it, and it automatically made me think of Cake, so here I am. This is much stronger, more passionate live; "Alright; HAY!" at 2:19! This is most awesome. Thanks for posting.
as they speed through the finish, the flags go down. the fans get up and they get out of town. the arena is empty except for one man, still driving and striving as fast as he can. the sun has gone down and the moon has come up, and long ago somebody left with the cup. but he's driving and striving and hugging the turns. and thinking of someone for whom he still burns.
Cake in the Pacific Northwest two summers ago. Best day of the year. Took my son out of Highschool for the day to outdoor concert. We were the third and fourth people in line. Thank god for that day. I just get lost in there music. Check out the song " I'm so sick of you" also.
he's going the distance. he's going for speed. she's all alone all alone in her time of need. because he's racing and pacing and plotting the course, he's fighting and biting and riding on his horse, he's going the distance.
No one can seem to see what is obvious. This is a song about the strive of materialism while forsaking LOVE. Placing value on what is temporary in exchange for what is eternal and irreplaceable. Use your time well, people. The race is in vain...that is the point.
How is this hard to understand? Responding to the person who responded to ur comment. He's going for speed, SHES ALL ALONE IN HER TIME OF NEED. Cuz he's racing and pacing on his fucking horse!
Pennyroyal Ozma i didn't say it's hard to understand, i said i didn't pick it up in that fashion. i know the song is about the man striving but the lyrics aren't that cut dry either. seriously chill out these are just comments
+moonhawk x I wasn't mad I was fucking around. I would never says he's racing and pacing on his horse in a serious way 😆 I think the lyrics do make it pretty cut and dry tho. It's about a relationship and on a larger scale missing out on life cuz ur striving for ur own ego
yea i've alwayz loved their bass it's so simple yet effective and their so leighed back and funny it's great they even keep alot of good energy it's like you hear it and ur like is this a joke then ur like wait a min hey it's pretty descent actually lol

90s man, so many groups in rock and hip hop that were so unique
My friend always refers to them as Grunge Country Hip-Hop Mariachi
@@Rbrgr83 LMFAO, that description is hilariously fitting
Wow, well said!
Respect for real. The guy doesn't even drop really complex lines, he just has an amazing ability to flow with the song on his own terms.
I love to put this song really loud when I'm driving alone in an open highway.
just what i did today ❤
This is the Best Cake song 🐐🐐🤟🤟🔥🔥
90's Best Era of Music

ive never seen anyone play a base
alex heisel When you say that, do you mean you've never seen anyone 'play' a base or you have never actually seen anyone play a base before? LOL!
ive never heard of an instrument called a base. I actually play an instrument that sounds similar called the bass, but i haven't ever seen anyone play a base
alex heisel ..or do you mean 'The Base'? Something so awesome needs quotation marks and capital letters :-)
alex heisel Oh fuck! I can't edit it. Well, take this as a heartfelt apology from someone who deeply respects 'The Bass' player; I admire your work.
To anyone else on this board, I retract my spelling ineptitude and apologise profusely on behalf of the lead guitar.

I love this band. Truely underrated. Also, one of the best and most underrated bass players of the past couple decades.

no trophy, no flowers, no flashbulbs, no wine,
he's haunted by something he cannot define.
bowel-shaking earthquakes of doubt and remorse,
crazy to think I'm just as old as this video, my dad always played their music when i was younger, and a few weeks ago he played this song and it sounded really familiar. In short that sent me down a rabbit hole of their amazing music.
Their bass player is so underrated, his playing is so tight and intelligent. He plays exactly what he needs to, no more and no less.
I can always tell its Cake by his voice, I can't really tell if hes singing or trying to sing or not singing or just chanting but I love his style.
CAKE is so underrated! THEY ARE THE BEST BAND EVER!!!

I really wish they would release their new album :( been waiting for years
I agree with Martin Cattani, they replicate the studio sound very well, which suggests to me that the studio sessions are pretty authentic...not heavily enhanced...if you know what I mean. This rocks!
they're great musicians because they play something simple, but they play the shit out of it.
they play it hard.
very hard.
and it works.
Over the next few weeks, I'll be posting a ton of live CAKE stuff (two entire concerts, including this one, will be posted).
I don't think any band has ever "nailed it" harder than this, live.
This is a prehistoric video
Cake is a unique band, with a unique sound.
I just heard "Long Line of Cars" on the radio, and knew it was Cake from the first synth notes.
Cake=Good :D

Best rock since Roadhouse Blues, which it lovingly embraces and commemorates.

Ever since this song came on the radio while I was playing F-Zero I constantly associate this song with Captain Falcon.
