The bass really is the centre of the song, and it's stunning. Agree about the electric guitar, too. The acoustic guitar frankly sounds rather crappy, and the part is boring. As to the vocals... they're the one thing I'd out and out replace, but hey! Different strokes and all.

OMG I remember when I started playing guitar I almost broke my cassette player trying to learn this solo. It was so hard to me at the time i eventually gave up. Proud to say 20 years later I learned this solo within minutes. Progress, no matter how small.

I remember listening to it in the mid-90s, I was surprised now I listened to it again a few days ago and it's still fresh and what a sound, how strange when bands were musicians, not just DJs, people with drum machines or software on a computer. It is the sample of transforming a classic of disco music and making a new version, not only changing the bit or sampling the original, great cover

This is my cover of this song. Been in love with the band since I first listened to them. The way he sings in this sounds like a man holding back tears at parts and it's amazing. Then I also like how the guy from the distance music video runs by in a scene.
It’s really nice to hear the bass guitar & drums out in front & the focal point of a song for a change!
First time seeing the video, and I'm impressed by the brilliant sad humor of a meter reader pouring out his heart alone while doing day-into-night drudgery, giving out tickets to those who are actually living. This kind of video shows off his quirky and very smart storytelling that pervades the lyrics in his albums... and so many people who don't take the time to really seek meaning in Cake's lyrics dismiss them, but they're actually quite masterful. (And yes, I know this is a cover and not John's lyrics - I'm talking about John's storytelling through this video and through his non-cover lyrics.)
