He's going the distance
He's going for speed
She's all alone (All alone)
All alone in her time of need
Because he's racing and pacing and plotting the course
He's fighting and biting and riding on his horse
He's going the distance

This song is so well written and preformed. Master class in musical theory! Gold star Cake.
It's not just great composition and performance (the rhythm section is especially good) but the arrangement provides a ridiculous amount of hooks. Who thought to that burst of mariachi trumpet in the chorus? In addition it's an awesome recording too as the mixing is absolutely perfect. I long thought it's one of the greatest records anyone has ever made. I'm glad to come here and see other people are as enthusiastic about it as I am.
@@BiggieTrismegistus nah literally agreed, this is something different just such a wide range of fuckin dope sounds.
I'm re-recording this song right now. The depth of this song really surprised me when I listened through a musician's ear. After singing this song for like 30 years in my car, I never realized for example, that the backing vocals "he's going for speed" are sung at a different time and pace than the lead vocal, you end up with this sort of delayed call/response. Really really cool. And what about the subtle guitar bends?? Never realized they even existed.
Cake = less is more
@@BiggieTrismegistus whats the high pitched sound that they used? it sounds like the instrument they used for west coast hip hop
Profound.
"The Distance" is a song by American alternative rock band Cake. Released in August 1996, "The Distance" was the first single from the band's second album, Fashion Nugget, and is considered one of their most popular songs.[4] It was written by the band's guitarist at the time, Greg Brown.
"It is a song about success and failure, and failure of success, really," said McCrea in 2019. "It's a sad song, because there is no success. You can explode into the world with great magnificence, and still feel like the guy underneath the Mickey Mouse head, with the fan batteries that have stopped working properly, and it's dark under there, and everybody wants your autograph."[5]
IMHO it's dark because you still haven't found your purpose and still on the hamster wheel running as fast as you possibly can but getting no where.
Yeah my first interpretation of the lyrics was that of someone who kills himself trying to satisfy his own needs and desires while ignoring everyone else's
God bless
I listen to this before work because I know it is about a man who strives until he realizes that there is no end and then keeps going, to reach the sea and then keep going. I will seek a life that makes me and others happy instead of helping to hold us all prisoner to a life we should avoid at all costs.

SACRAMENTO REPRESENT !
Ah yes, a song about a man who despite the odds, despite his romantic circumstances, and despite artificial goals constructed by others, continues indeed, to go the distance... Beautiful.
Very well said....I concur..
Absolutely perfect description of this allegorical masterpiece.
This guy is trapped by the belief that he needs to go the distance instead of being with the ones he loves. And he knows it, it fills him with self doubt and remorse.
I don't think that's what the song is about. I believe "going the distance" here is not a good thing. What it looks and sounds like, to me, is that "going the distance" is working so hard at a job that won't ever reward your efforts and neglecting your own physical/mental health and relationships in the process.
"She's all alone, all alone in her time of need" - he isn't there for her, because he's going the distance.
"Long ago somebody left with the cup" and "No trophy, no flowers, no flashbulbs, no wine" - again, he goes unrewarded for his intense efforts yet continues to go the distance.
"She's hoping in time that her memories will fade" - they are no longer together, either because he wasn't there, or just isn't alive, so she's hoping to forget him.
Then we see at the end of the video he's going into the ocean, I interpret that as his death. He's worked himself into his grave.
But, that's just one guy's opinion

Reluctantly crouched at the starting line
Engines pumping and thumping in time
The green light flashes, the flags go up
Churning and burning, they yearn for the cup
They deftly maneuver and muscle for rank
Fuel burning fast on an empty tank
Reckless and wild, they pour through the turns
Their prowess is potent and secretly stern
As they speed through the finish, the flags go down
The fans get up and they get out of town
The arena is empty except for one man
Still driving and striving as fast as he can
The sun has gone down and the moon has come up
And long ago somebody left with the cup
But he's driving and striving and hugging the turns
And thinking of someone for whom he still burns
He's going the distance
He's going for speed
She's all alone (all alone)
All alone in her time of need
Because he's racing and pacing and plotting the course
He's fighting and biting and riding on his horse
He's going the distance
No trophy, no flowers, no flashbulbs, no wine
He's haunted by something he cannot define
Bowel-shaking earthquakes of doubt and remorse
Assail him, impale him with monster-truck force
In his mind, he's still driving, still making the grade
She's hoping in time that her memories will fade
'Cause he's racing and pacing and plotting the course
He's fighting and biting and riding on his horse
The sun has gone down and the moon has come up
And long ago somebody left with the cup
But he's striving and driving and hugging the turns
And thinking of someone for whom he still burns
'Cause he's going the distance
He's going for speed
She's all alone (all alone)
All alone in her time of need
Because he's racing and pacing and plotting the course
He's fighting and biting and riding on his horse
He's racing and pacing and plotting the course
He's fighting and biting and riding on his horse
He's going the distance
He's going for speed
He's going the distance
Ah no, so sad, alright
Oh no, oh no, no, no
what i dont get is:
is he driving a car? like it suggests at the start with engines pumping and thumping, green lights and flags, he's striving and driving and hugging the turns.
or is he on a horse? He's fighting and biting and riding on his horse, tophies flowers flashbulbs and wine suggests a different scene to engines flags and greenlights which are certainly not in horse racing

Twisted Metal made this Song HEAVY
EXACTLY, it's like twisted metal made it more heavier which I think makes this song sound even more better
@@FBI-lu3wf I mean cmon, The first Twisted Metal CarMash we get in the show... and WERE GOING THE DISTNACE.
I finally understand this song. It’s not about racing at all it’s about conviction and chasing your goals even if you aren’t the first one there.
Thank you.
Yikes. It's about rape.
When office buddies get together and form a band. lol
ikr lol.
HunterGatherer HA!
HunterGatherer funny

Oh yeaah!! LOOOONNNGTIME someone made some proper 90s style classy rock!!

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Legend has it... that he's still going the distance.
..this band right here?? BRILLIANCE!!! horns, bass, bowel shaking earth quakes of SUPER SOUND!!!!💥💯
Cake is a very unique band with a "sound" and in particular rythym and lead guitar and bass sound that is all their own. Has an incredible particular funk to it. Nothing else out there like them, that sounds even close. Even their cover of War Pigs by Black Sabbath, is very unique in style. I like the "rawness" of their sound when recorded for albums. A very tight sounding band.
Perfect Song for Twisted Metal!!
Is Noone going to talk about how the melodica makes the song 3x better?
Songs amazing, there's something simple yet brilliant about the composition.
I love how 90's the video is too, has that softness, colour palette :D
I mean, it makes sense. This was released in '96. It's just that this vid was uploaded in 2011.
Watch Polvo’s Tragic Carpet Ride
Wym, we're still in the 90s?
This bass line is fuxking IMMACULATE..
“Bowel shaking”
The bass line is insane
the big brands and sporting industries that use this piece of art never understood it
As someone who lives in Georgia and enjoys various subgenres of rock, I was surprised to find out that Cake and 311 started with Capricorn Records. If you are unfamiliar, they are based in Macon,GA and became known for southern rock acts like The Allman Brothers and Marshall Tucker Band.
Yes
You gotta love the 90s. So much of awesome, absurd randomness. The red bear. The tie. The guy on his desk.
