Cake has several interesting songs, you should explore them more with "short skirt long jacket", "Rock'n' Roll Lifestyle", "Never There" and "Shadow Stabbing". Another song that always stands out to me is "She don't use Jelly" by the Flaming Lips. You'll never hear lyrics like this again.
In 1999, I did a road trip down to California (I'm from Vancouver, Canada). I stayed at a hostel in California and did some cooking in the kitchen, and some folks and I connected. We all head out around midnight on a warm April night, just wandering around town. At about 3am, we came upon an old club in the downtown core, where music was playing out the windows. It was Cake rehearsing for a tour they were going on. We just sat on the curb, talking, listening to one of the most popular bands around doing soundchecks, practicing songs, and goofing off. We hung out till sunrise, found an all-night diner, and had the breakfast of champions. I've still never seen them in concert, but what a great memory. Good people, a warm night, good music, great conversation. That's all ya need.
Cake is a reflection of Sacramento, a very diverse city. They are a band that is a fusion of musical styles: Rock, rap, funk, country, etc. Please try Ruby Sees All, Jolene, No Phone, Long Line of Cars. Thanks Jayvee!
Cake’s album “Fashion Nugget” is one of those that I can listen to the whole way through. No skips. It’s brilliant, layered, quirky. So glad you reacted to this! ❤️✌️
That's the truth I was a teenager in the Early to mid '90s there was alot of originality and no two songs sounded the same but what made the '90s special is the fusion of different Genre's with Hip-Hop to create music like this
@@adamdonovan4071 Adam Donovan that's true there was a few bands like The Blues Travelers also but " Crash Into Me" had a Groove to it with that military style drumming on the back beat but majority of the music in the ' 90s had some kind of Hip-Hop influence if it wasn't in the instrumentation it was in the way they did their vocals with some kind of rap flow
@@BKLYN_TZU they had some good songs. They just tend to have a high interchangeability. Boyd was truly amazing on the fiddle, and Dave had a unique voice, I just can’t listen to a full album of theirs as it gets repetitive. Jack Johnson has similar issues though…late 90s surfer acoustic rock if you aren’t familiar.
@@adamdonovan4071 Adam Donovan the repetitiveness in the music is what they use to call the groove back in the day LOL but everything else you wrote is the truth
Cake's music is like the name. They take everyday ordinary things and events and turn them into hit songs. This was a one of their biggest and they had many in the 90's.
The secret to Cake is that bass and horn...and originality. A singer who can't sing but knows the power of pause and uses his weakness as a strength. Awesome
Whaaat! I was just randomly revisiting this band a few days ago and now here you are. They were really great and different back then. "Never There" was their biggest hit and I think you'll enjoy it too!
Wow this brings me back to 10th grade!! And you are right! The 90’s were an eclectic mix of musical styles and new beats! A great time to be a teenager
Cake is awesome! Their style is so unique. I would also highly recommend "short skirt long jacket" by them. I would suggest reacting to a lyric video of it (the official music video has people talking over the music so it's kinda distracting from the song. "Never There" is also very good.
YES! I love Cake. For more try: short skirt/long jacket, rock 'n' roll lifestyle, never there, love you madly, haze of love, perhaps perhaps perhaps, shadow stabbing, comanche... honestly, I've never met a Cake song that I didn't like.
Love CAKE! Definitely had their own sound yet it is addicting. Anytime I hear this or others by them I’m always turning it up. Definitely recommend Short Skirt/Long Jacket and another artist if you enjoyed this, Moby.
This song made it's way onto every mixtape and CD I made growing up. They are a great band, check out a song called Never There, it's my favorite! Love the variety of genres you react to!
CAKE has so much going on. I always loved the kind of change up with Sad songs and waltzes and Stickshifts and safetbelts. Also their version of Mahna Mahna
“Bowel-shaking earthquakes of doubt and remorse, assail him, impale him, with monster truck force.” They have awarded Pulitzers for less poetry than that.
Whenever I am in front of something that is overwhelming and I can barely muster the confidence to even show up (whether it be a job interview after being turned down 20 times and my resume is sht, and my bank acct is overdrawn. Or when I had to go and face my almost exhusband in court fighting for custody of my kids when he had a job and i didn't). I listen to this to make myself try and remember who i am and THAT ME is someone they haven't even met yet! Get strong. Get ready. Get poised. BECAUSE THIS JOB IS MINE. (etc. This song gives me strength.)
Here’s another quirky but brilliant 90s band… Ben Folds Five. “Brick” is probably they’re most famous song (heavy), but “Song for the Dumped” is fun! Ben Folds can rock the piano!
You might try Type O Negative "Love You to Death". O' Holy Night by David Phelps, Gaither choir, where David has a green shirt. Shaggy, "Boombastic", "Angel", or "It wasn't me".
Slash's signature is a top hat, this dude's is a fishing hat .. which is perfect because Cake is a snarky band.. lot's of great songs. I've never seen him without that fishing hat lol.
Imagine a South American boy, who understood a few words of English listening and even crazier, "buying" an original Cake CD ("Fashion Nugget") in the 90's!!! For just two songs (Frank Sinatra and I Will Survive) without meeting the band and meeting all those disco gems....rare for you nowadays, weirder and crazier for me and my friends in the 90's!! ! Greetings from Rio Tercero, Córdoba Argentina dad!!
Bruh, your reaction was priceless! Same as mine, back in the day. I remember the first time , thinking ,oh,some rap song.then the guitar kicked in...then the Horns played.. I was like,THIS is DIFFERENT,and I LIKE IT!! You should check out "I will survive". Its a cover of a Gloria Gaynor song. If you do,do the live version..its even better!
Oh the memories! This song takes me back...They did a cover of I Will Survive believe it or not.. I have that one too from the 90's on my playlist... you should check it out
Fashion Nugget and Prolonging The Magic albums, every song is good. Yes, the 90s was not one sound, everyone says grunge but that was one of so many new sounds.
The song is about race car driving ☺ For more "Quirky" 90s songs ill suggest for you "Sucked out" by Superdrag" "Lucus with the lid off" by Lucus and "Your Woman" by White Town 😁
Love Cake! Haven't listened to them in years! This brings back a lot of great memories! Your next Cake reaction should be "Short Skirt/Long Jacket". It's a great fun quirky song. Thanks Jay! Short Skirt/Long Jacket - "th-cam.com/video/X5KmB8Laemg/w-d-xo.html
They were using race car metaphorically to build a business/relationship analogy. Good stuff, loved Cake sawvthem in Pdx, Violent Femmes opened for them.
"Short Skirt/Long Jacket" or "Never There" are two other great songs from them worth listening to.
Yes!! Definitely!
YEEEES!!! Every girl in the 90s, including me, wanted to be the girl with the short skirt and the loong jacket.
No phone is another great track
Rock and Roll Lifestyle is pretty underrated.
Love you Madly is great too!!

AH YES! She dont use Jelly! I love The Flaming Lips!
Yes! Have recommended “She Don’t Use Jelly” by Flaming Lips so many times. Love Ben Folds Five’s “lounge” cover of the song, too!
Thank God for Cake! Totally unique, totally listenable, love the horns, love the layers of sound.
Check out their remake of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive”. Completely mind-blowing.

This whole album, Fashion Nugget, is amazing. Like every single song slaps.
I love Cake. Their sound is so unique. I put in another bid for Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps for the next song.

This song will make you start bopping your head everytime. If it comes on the radio, I'm cranking it up.
Cake is one of those bands where if you know of them, you end up knowing all their songs. They're just so much fun to listen to.
Wow this brings me back to 10th grade!! And you are right! The 90’s were an eclectic mix of musical styles and new beats! A great time to be a teenager
Cake owned the world for a few hot minutes. Do "Frank Sinatra" next. Few other great songs. This one started the wild ride.

Cake is such a vibe, there really isn't anything quite like them. "Comfort Eagle" and "Commissioning a Symphony in C" are two of my favorites
I’m in a Cake rabbit hole, you’re reaction is wonderful. So glad you enjoyed it
"you’re reaction"
your
Propellerheads w/ Shirley Bassey - "History Repeating" (1998) A jazzy groove with the legend on vocals, and the video is pretty cool too.
“Short skirt and a Long Jacket” is also a great tune from CAKE.
This song never gets old. If I live to be an old lady this goes on my top 10 playlist in the nursing home.
One of my all time favorite bands, always innovative and quirky!
YES! I love Cake. For more try: short skirt/long jacket, rock 'n' roll lifestyle, never there, love you madly, haze of love, perhaps perhaps perhaps, shadow stabbing, comanche... honestly, I've never met a Cake song that I didn't like.
So good! In high school, I would dance the "Bobby Brown" to this song.
This song is wickedly cool! Have always loved it!
90s music is a hell of a drug.

Masterpiece fusion of hip hop, rock etc. Love it.
Oh wow ! Thank you ! I’ve loved them from way back !!! This song was also sometimes used as nascar theme . Cake has several other good songs
Oh the days of Ska. Why did we leave it behind?! Love love love this song. So many memories attached to it.
The 90s were the shit! Had so many styles of music you always loved something on the radio that was new 💙

Ive been WAITING for someone to react to CAKE!!! Very eclectic... The more you listen the more you will love them!
Broke multiple boom boxes playin this song back in the day. Got a job, got a real system, blew it up too! I'm still going the Distance tho ! 🤘🥲🤘
Canadian truckers have surely been blasting this all the way to Ottawa.
lol
Cake is great and this album is my favorite. I just love Cake ❤️
Good that you like too.
Now you know how I felt the first time I heard this!
You're one of us now, bro. ❤😂🤘✌❤
Cake is awesome! They definitely have a sound all their own. Hope you get around to checking out more of their stuff. :)
The bass player from this band slayed, always had a bangin vibe regardless of the song.
CAKE has so much going on. I always loved the kind of change up with Sad songs and waltzes and Stickshifts and safetbelts. Also their version of Mahna Mahna
Cake is funky man! You can't go wrong with any of their tunes.
Great band! Can't go wrong with any of their songs. I do agree with Short Skirt Long Jacket.
Yes. Pure, distilled Sacramento.
“Bowel-shaking earthquakes of doubt and remorse, assail him, impale him, with monster truck force.”
They have awarded Pulitzers for less poetry than that.
Idk how I missed your reaction on this one. San Diego 1992 was my intro to this beautiful art.
I forgot all about this banger
The 90' the best decade for music by a mile !

The song 'Comfort Eagle' by Cake is pretty good. It was used in the hilarious movie 'Shallow Hal'
Here’s another quirky but brilliant 90s band… Ben Folds Five. “Brick” is probably they’re most famous song (heavy), but “Song for the Dumped” is fun! Ben Folds can rock the piano!
I saw them in a small venue in Bham Al when this album came out. Great in concert 💜
CAKE was BOMB, and so underrated! Their album, "Fashion Nugget" is brilliant.
The 90s were such a wonderful time 😂
I mean the guy was flowing and had some bars. Love this song

'I dont know what I'm listening to, but I like it'. Yeah, that's Cake.
"Short Skirt, Long Jacket" should be your next reaction. Cake sounds like Cake, and nobody else.
If you've ever seen the movie, "Shallow Hal", they use Cake's song "Comfort Eagle"- might want to check that one out as well.

The only hit song featuring a Melodica. Only in the 90’s 😁
