When I started playing bass this was 1 of the 1st songs me and my guitar buddy learned to play. They are independent of eachothet yet complimentary w enough room to groove extra with. So sick dude
@@theramplocal Trying to figure out which bass he's using here...the official music video has an original pbass or telecaster bass. Flatwound strings a must.
3 years later after this comment was made, as I sit here after my shift at the local Walmart, I'm here playing WWE 2K23 and watching the same video as you, and I came here to say absolutely nothing. Hope you're well, hoss.
lol people are complaining about the audio quality? I can hear the bass in my headphones...it's not amazing, but I'm used to washed out VHS audio from the 90s that's often far, far worse....thanks to the uploader and whoever ripped it! always loved CAKE's energy!!
I met these guys once, back stage on a tour with De La Soul and the Flaming Lips. The singer was really nice and fun to talk with. & They kicked out the jams. Great Show!
I saw that tour! Modest Mouse also played (so did The Hackensaw Boys and Kinky, but I got there late and missed their sets). Such a great show with such a diverse lineup!
I've been looking at live performances on talk shows for a couple hours and Conan is hitting at like an 80%. He has almost everything I've looked up on his show.
Haha. People complaining about the audio. It’s definitely no Shinedown “Save Me” from Kimmel, but it’s not terrible. The bass is still bumping. And this is from 1996. That’s eons ago in digital quality.
@@JohnMatayas yeah I'm not sure what he's talking about. The bass is perfectly audible. It gets drowned out in the chorus a little when it's synced with the guitar in rhythm, but it's still there
Is it weird that I think the best part of this video was the VHS tracking line at the bottom of the screen? That reminded me of the 90's more than the song.
It's cool to see them performing this song when it had just came out. Sucks that the sound guy didn't give them a proper mix, I don't know WTF happened there.
It's multiple layers of compression. These are exaggerated versions of what mp3s sound like. As many are saying, this is probably a VCR tape and they're a bad start. You digitize it then convert it at some point then it goes through TH-cam compression as well. This is an extremely popular show in a golden age for for the format that had live music every episode. The sound engineer was likely amazing. Really doubt we need to be complaining here, especially when we only have access to this thanks to someone else's work.
I have to think that the vocal performance here is extremely difficult because of the off-key nature of the melody. Not many road signs in there to anchor off of.(?)
i like how it starts semi awkward but they still hype up as the song goes on. that bassest is awesome
Bowel-shaking earthquakes of doubt and remorse
Assail him, impale him with monster-truck force
(brilliant)
The drummer is kicking some serious ass!
Love what he does at 2:18!
dude's got serious skills he's underrated for sure, lots of nuanced playing
He was the drummer for the Sex Pistols
@@Strongasmeat Paul cook was the drummer for the Sex Pistols what are you talking about
@@Strongasmeat That's Todd Roper, he was never the drummer for the Sex Pistols.
Im 87 and ive been listening to this song since my grandmother first played it to me on the car radio (56 buick)
Cake could never be confused with any other band and that is a special thing.
Simple rock n roll yet so unique and timeless.
Huge hip-hop element too
Oh no. This is funk!
Not THAT simple tho, you try say “ahAh” while playing those riffs
@@Grym0626 ok
@@Grym0626 ok just did
Bassist needs a raise
They all could do with a renegotiation on this mix))
That bass player (Victor Damiani) left in 1997
@@Rountree1985 He works in city government these days! Good for him but maaaaaaan I want to hear more of his bass
@@jacobdanielharrington The guitar player left too :(
Thank fuck we live in a world where this song exists.
What a great bass player, great guitar riff and fills
When I started playing bass this was 1 of the 1st songs me and my guitar buddy learned to play. They are independent of eachothet yet complimentary w enough room to groove extra with. So sick dude
Seriously. An inspiration of sorts

ampeg, of course it sounds great!
I love how he was awkward at first but the more he got into it, the less he became

Guys. It’s a 24 year old video probably ripped from a vhs recording. It’s gonna have shit quality
appreciate the warmth 🔥

He sounds good live
Cake is hands down one of the best bands of all time
The 1970s called. They’d like a word with you. 😂😂😂
@@mitchwinder1204Try to name a better band or artist from 70's better than Cake. You can't.
Objectively, not.
@@abrhmmnzo You're funny, kid.
@samquitkin338 IYHO, that is.
Greg Brown was so awesome.
Fuking Legend
He wrote this song too, i think? Genius indeed.
I know his kid 😃
I still like it.. live music on a TV show is quite different than playing in a studio.. where one can control the music via feedback. STILL AWESOME.
I met these guys once, back stage on a tour with De La Soul and the Flaming Lips. The singer was really nice and fun to talk with. & They kicked out the jams. Great Show!
De la and flaming lips? So good dude
That's a nasty triple threat of a tour... r.i.p. dave
I saw that tour! Modest Mouse also played (so did The Hackensaw Boys and Kinky, but I got there late and missed their sets). Such a great show with such a diverse lineup!
I'm a metal and hard rock fan, but this song is a jam, no doubt. These guys rocked it.
Conan with cake. I could ask for nothing more
world peace, i suppose
I'd do anything to get back to 1996
I've been looking at live performances on talk shows for a couple hours and Conan is hitting at like an 80%. He has almost everything I've looked up on his show.
I still love and play this from time to time 😳27 years down the line.
Wow, that is almost half my life!
No lip syncing, Respect.
I love this song but he's basically just talking. Lol.
Haha. People complaining about the audio. It’s definitely no Shinedown “Save Me” from Kimmel, but it’s not terrible. The bass is still bumping. And this is from 1996. That’s eons ago in digital quality.
Saw these guys live once. Needless to say geniuses.
The bass makes the song, you can't hear it here.
Yes!
I kinda hear it perfectly
@@JohnMatayas yeah I'm not sure what he's talking about. The bass is perfectly audible. It gets drowned out in the chorus a little when it's synced with the guitar in rhythm, but it's still there
You don't hear it because Xander is not playing it yet.
I hear it pretty well. It's lost a tiny bit behind the other instruments when they ramp up, but it's definitely there.
I’m bet they’re amazing live
I went to see them a while back, and they’re awesome live. They gave away a whole ass tree at the concert too
I saw them live in AZ and their set was tight and groovy.
So good!!!
Best Cake song ever
Takes me back ❤
Love ‘em .
Excellent
so good
Victor Damiani & Guild Bass !
The perfect song
They are special. Oh my God
No other band quite like them
love those guitar riffs
The audio mixing here is definitely one of my favorites of all time. Well done
wow they were so cool
Damn. So good. So cool.
oh yeah, love Cake!!
Such a real performance
Great!
Awesome
Damn that still slaps
Anyone else prefer this to the studio version?
The guitar is more forward in this mix and I like it.
I still love this beat here in 2022 🙋♂️
A perfect song.
I think.
This was almost 30 years ago. Enjoy it young ones, it goes way faster than you think.
This is so fckin excellent
saw them in paradiso great live band "sing along! your doing it for yourselves"
This video made me reach for the tracking knob on my non-existent vcr
Find me another band that sounds like cake. I love cake so much

no one talking about the guitar? that guy gives all the juice to the song 🤌
You can have your Cake and eat it too ❤
A clean beat
Well, that is one of the world's greatest songs given the most underwhelming applause
@msgrime1981 "the most underwhelming applause"? That's weird. It sounds to me like the audience applauded quite enthusiastically and loudly. No? KMF
