FREEWING A6 INTRUDER CRASHED -MY FAULT- by Fat Guy Flies RC

  • Well I hate to leave 2022 on a sour note but I messed up. I CRASHED my A-C Intruder from Freewing on its second ever flight. I at first blamed Freewing for the aileron detaching, but after a post mortem in the shop I discovered a short caused my me putting a screw through the rudder servo lead. This lead had exposed wires to the metal screw and I am guessing the vibration building from the first few flights worked the wires to were they starting touching the metal. This made the rudder suddenly deploy to the left and I believe I over compensated in a panic causing the stall into the ground . If I had more altitude I may have been ok but this was 15 feet off the ground and I had just given her full take off power.
    Thanks for watching and staying up to date with Fat Guy Flies RC!

    100% tip stall. You was lucky it didn't happen the first two times.

      @FatGuyFliesRC  ปีที่แล้ว

      I also discovered a short in the rudder servo lead where I screwed through it. it was the type of mistake that took some time and normal vibration to set the time bomb off.

    I feel your pain. I'm the guy that crashed 3 70mm F16's on their maidens never flew before thinking, I got this. They did not live 30 seconds each. Now I hand toss a 64mm F22 and she's been a beauty. I'm happy with a less powerful RC.

    It looks very much like a tip stall due to a quick rotation not using the full length of the runway. I always go the full length of the runway on all my models as it doesn’t cost anything

      If you watch in slow motion you can see hard right rudder. I am pretty sure that was caused by the short.

      @@BriNaCa regardless of whatever rudder input it was horsed off the runway too quickly, you can’t do that with jets. I’m aways amazed how pilot error never comes in to RC model crashes

    I have this exact plane. I learned REAL quick that you cannot pull hard with very little air speed or else it will stall. The elevator acts like an "air break" when fully deflected at low speeds.. almost cost me the plane during maiden. MUST be gentle on elevator when taking off or making steep turns.

      Yeah I should have dialed down the throws on the elevator.

    The deformation in the foam can be relieved by placing the compressed sections in very hot water. Then glue it back together and repaint that repaired section. I rode EA-6B's in the Navy and they often had panels and areas with obvious paint repairs.

Flew my commander for 3 months with 1 pretty bad crash, then 2 weeks ago my last flight until probably April here in Pennsylvania I destroyed it. Pilot error practicing low inverted passes. At the end of this video I did a post mortem and discovered a wire I had put a screw through that was a time bomb that went off in the third attempt of flight. It was the rudder servo lead that caused a sudden left rudder movement that caught me off guard and I over compensated with right aileron and caused a unrecoverable stall at low altitude.

    Greg, I have spent a lot of time watching your take-off (with the crash) in Slow Motion and zoomed in using video editing tools - I could not see any issues with the moving surfaces - for what its worth (and it is no consolation - I know how you feel, I lost my XFLY A10 in about 2 mins after take-off on her maiden - complete right off - turned out I forgot to secure the battery and it moved forward into the nose) - the more I look it seems as if it was a tip stall - induced by lifting off too soon (no flaps) - I think all your damage was caused by the actual impact with the ground - However as you say you had indeed trap the Rudder wire and pinched it, IMHO - a Rudder fault would not cause the movements I saw on the video - I am sure other people have other views, I do feel for you and its one of the issue with the price one has to pay for the EDF Jets these days - $$$$$ - Sorry...
