- An absolute maiden crash disaster is the best way to describe this. This WAS the E-Flite F-16 Thunderbird.
I got one good landings and two takeoffs. Well I picked up the pieces and took her home. perhaps a post mortem of the dead plane will revel a possible cause for the crash! I was going fast enough, so It should not have been a tipstall?
Needless to say I am very disappointed. However crashes DO and WILL happen. It is part of the hobby you can either get angry and discouraged or you can try to learn from the incident and strive to overcome it. I choose the later.

:( sorry. Nothing worse.
Spectrum radio i bet. Yup nx10. I promise, switch brands and never lose another plane on radio failure/ lockout! I will never buy their junk again. The cheap off brands never fail at 1/3 the price! Don't buy plug and play. Buy your own receiver. You did an amazing flight!
@@Curious_Skeptic
I switched to Hitec Aurora about 15 years ago after losing model after model to Spektrum lost links. Haven’t lost a link since.
@@FFE-js2zp I feel 99% of Spektrum issues are their stupid autopilot/flight assist systems. I've hated them from the first time I had one. I immediately rip them out and install a budget Spektrum no frills receiver. Never had an issue.
@@Curious_Skeptic
I agree their “SAFE S3X” crap is garbage, but its the fundamental Rx design that loses links all the time. You cannot run a 5V Rx on a servo bus that dips below 5V every time a servo is actuated or God forbid 3 gear move. It is an unfixable design flaw and I lost count of how many models it trashed before I switched to Hitec Aurora.
Its impossible to brownout a Hitec Rx because they run directly off the main battery Voltage. So no need for BECs that blow apart thin servo wires, either. And every $35 9-channel Rx comes with telemetry built-in for free, so you actually know the battery voltage in real time instead of insanely dangerous flight timers. Even my UMXs have V telemetry.
Spektrum is for absolute beginners. Plus the switches and gimbals are bottom of the barrel plasticky rubbish. Hitec costs about 90% less, too, given no telemetry modules to buy and the Rx are 90% cheaper. Plus the Rxs range check to 10 miles, frequency hop, and scan to avoid congestion. Hitec is extreme pro quality vs Spektrum’s fraudulent utter garbage.
I crashed my 70 mm Thunderbird about 2 weeks ago. Mine was totally destroyed. Don't get to discouraged. It happens. Keep up the great work you do on your channel!
Too many happy flights and memories with this hobby to let one bad time make me quit! Thanks for the kind words!
Greg, the time and effort you put into your videos speaks quite a lot about your passion for this crazy wonderful hobby. Keep it up buddy, I always learn from your videos.
I appreciate that! And as long as I am able I will continue this channel!
@@FatGuyFliesRCI say, it is like flying for myself and also the crash was very sad to watch. I would bet on orientation and high rates on ailerons. Maybe some wind or something. But could also be Rx for sure… on video it looks very small but live it’s another thing. Could you ever repair her? From the top she looked “top” but from the bottom not good. I would had glue her and kept her as a hand tossing F-16… My Freewing F-16 was similarly broken, but a bit more fuse on the front. I was able to model her with the heat gun and glue part for part u til she gained strength and form. With some epoxy from the inside she is now stiffer than before but also a bit ugly 😝 The other day I ripped off a wing also :S Just a good trainer now :) Maybe I-ll get the gear out to save some weight. Lights are cool for sure!! 👍🏼
I'm new to the hobby. I've had guys crash at my field due to signal interference. The one thing I know is that I started off with ELRS and I have ZERO issues. I just know that some people will never leave Spektrum. Sorry for your loss.
There are signal loss issue with any system Futaba, Spektrum Radio master what have you.....9 times out of 10 though it is a environmental issue and not the radio system itself . In this area of the field we have lost 6 to 7 planes all being flown on varied systems. The power lines there at certain times (we believe) emit a dead zone that is intermittent and unpredictable. We all now either flt lower the the powerlines in that spot or way higher and the crashes there have stopped.
@@FatGuyFliesRCinteresting… it is something to take care of 👍🏼 Better fly way higher there :)
Greg, I’m gutted for ya. I know you’ve already gotten over it and keep soldiering on.
We’ve all been there, friend.
If ya aint crashing you aint flying!!!
Thanks for sharing. I felt that 😢
Yeah we have renamed that area as the f-16 killing zone!
Hey Greg, sorry to see this happen! Mine did something similar driving me to do some homework on it. It lost signal twice on me. The first time it came back, but the second time it never did. It went into a wings level power off decent so it was repairable. I found out that the newer models come with a capacitor attached to the receiver. Some people on forums were saying that when you cycle the gear it can put a load on the receiver. In my two scenarios, I wasn't cycling the gear, but I tossed one on there regardless. Since then, I've flown countless times without a single issue. Hopefully this helps if you get her back in the air or end up buying another one.
Now this makes me think I am pretty sure I just put the gear back down since I was coming around for a landing. Thanks so much.
@@FatGuyFliesRC Because it's a known issue from HH, maybe they'll send you a new one since you buy so much from them. It's one of my favorite birds.
Lee, what do you mean "you tossed one on there"? What's the fix?
@@DreamsOverTheRockies I added a capacitor to the bind channel. I haven’t had an issue with it since. I think it helps the receiver under the occasional load.
@@ltk20 Thanks, what size.
Well at least we know it wasn't pilot error... In the process of repairing my Timber 1.5 which went in something like yours but at a lower altitude. I thought it had to be signal loss but I reattached the battery as soon as I got to the crash site and the plane rebound. Found that the right aileron servo was gear stripped and guys were saying at the club that because there was no damage at all to the right wing (biggest damage was nose broke off, prop broke and prop adapter got bent) and crashing at maybe 100' away from me that the likely cause was the servo going bad in flight. BTW, 100% aileron was good at pre-flight and working fine until the crash.
Good luck with your repairs. I'm waiting for a prop adapter to come in the mail in order to put my bird back in the air.
Thanks, good luck with yours , my rebuild may be awhile.
this happened to me with my maiden on my E-flite F-15 and since I was and am still a kid it was devastating, in fact it happened twice with that same plane, turns out the battery disconnected mid flight, so just make sure those battery's are snug. Such a shame beautiful bird...
Well my club trainer and VERY experienced pilot and builder told me that at that spot if your to close the the power lines there is a small area of power dead zone that comes from the power lines. It can scramble or cut out your signal at certain times. I was just to close and unlucky.
@@FatGuyFliesRC oh that sucks man, better luck next time!
Gosg Greg I am so sorry to see his.She was flying very well, and the first take-off and landing was sweet, the second take-off also nice, and she looked fine until the signal loss.I hope you do find the cause, and I do like your attitude.I know you'll be back on the horse soon and I'll be watching. Thanks my brother!
Why cry over spilled milk? Just want to iron out the culprit here.
I was wondering can you write these planes off for uninsured losses . Also the location of that receiver is too close to the battery , I have had the same problem
Possibly but you would have to be in a business model like I am with an established business name. From what I understand otherwise it is recreational. As far as the receiver placement the antenna end is more important and this is or was a bind and fly so the receiver is where the factory placed it.
Funny that's not been my experience
Sorry for your loss my friend 🙁
All part of it.
Aww! Bad luck.
Well this is a old video, long since replaced with many great flights now.
Same exact thing happened to my E-Flight thunderbird. Exactly the same thing. Mine was no recoverable.
Neither was mine but I reused the receiver , esc and motor.
Sorry to see that ...maybe do a complete 360 degree range check; just to be sure...just a thought... what baffles me is @10:39 it shows the antenna pulled from the fuselage and laying across the leading edge of the right wing...how the heck does that happen 🙄 ? have a great week; hated that happened...
Yeah the antenna was running alond from the factory to the aft of the plane, the impacted shifted everything forward violently . Thanks for watching!
Gotta hand it to you. You only said “crap”. And only 3 times at that. I would have been much, much more vocal if that would have been my new plane. You are a better man than me.
Thanks, but at that point losing your head with emotion will not allow you to figure out the crash or allow you to pick up little details when you approach the crash site that may be clues to the cause.
Happy Birthday haha Definitely lost signal.
Tell me about it We call that area the jet killing zone.
Sorry Sir!!! Great 1st flight .
All good
If, in fact, the aircraft banked right at the exact moment you gave left aileron input, that would suggest to me that you did not lose signal. Did you have any odd mixes programmed? I'm wondering if that departure was caused be some adverse coupling. The comment about the landing gear loading the Rx is interesting, but I'd expect that would only happen during transition and it didn't sound like you lowered the gear as you executed the turn. Hope you figure out what caused it. Thanks for sharing! Those jets are gorgeous when they're flying.
One of the Original club Members and Officers at my club said the part of the field has a weird radio signal issue if your to close to the road and to level with the powerlines. He suggested flying higher over the power lines in that particular section. I learned they call the area of the field the bermuda triangle.
@@FatGuyFliesRC Just stumbled onto this video: th-cam.com/video/BmMjrgFqzWo/w-d-xo.html, and thought about your comment. Fast forward to 16:00, Tip#9. Something to think about...
Ah Greg I feel your pain right now so sorry that shit happens to such a great guy!! I hope that you can get a new fuselage and put the rest of the parts back together and get her back into the air for a second maiden. Best wishes my friend, your friend Marty from Canada 🇨🇦 🛩 🛩
Thanks, but after closer inspection it will need alot more than a new fuse. But still I may try a complete rebuild and repair with existing debris....lol
@@FatGuyFliesRC as Discover RC says, Never Stop! 😜
bummer. that same thing happen to me also. possibly a brown out in the receiver. happened to me also. i ended up repairing it with bamboo and epoxy. really sucks for the loss. horizon hasnt helped me with anything not even the last plane that melted a servo on the 4th flight. im not buying them anymore. only motion rc and arrows and some other few brands but no more eflite for me. thanks for the good video!
Well I have had great and terrible customer service with HH but it has gotten worse since Covid. Motion RC is still pretty good and so is HobbyZone. Hobby King is 50/50. As far as this it was electrical interference from that section of power lines, we believe at the club. Many have lost planes using all types of brand receivers in that exact same area on power lines. it is rare but i always fly high over that section just to stay safe.
@FatGuyFliesRC yeah if it had happened in exact spot as another plane thats gonna be right. 🫡 keep flying and hope you have good holidays. 👍
Awww man... that hurts. Sorry to see that.... such a great looking model as well. Maybe it will buff out. 🤔 and those lights kept working 💪
I hope so too
OH NOOOOOO!! I love my Thunderbird! Sure, my T-bird has some unfortunate dings and dents, but it’s not TOO bad, but I wish I’d not had those dents. If this happened to me, I would be EXTREMELY disappointed. For sure you should get another one! It’s awesome! Also, you should take off that wire holder thing so you can shove the EC5 back into the wire hole. Mine has the AR636B, so it’s a lot cleaner in the hatch area.
Good tip. My third is not dead yet!
Beyond sad for ya, bummer city. 😢. That’s the Jet I’m so looking forward to buying as my 1st EDF too. Seeing that shit happen worries me. You even did a range test. Ug. Hopefully H.H will help you out with rebuild cost. That was not pilot error.
This happened almost a year ago. i did not make a claim with them. Wish I had. The ESC, EDF /motor now live happily in my Freewing Yak 130 that has many flights on it now.
@@FatGuyFliesRC I saw that video too. 👍. It just hate to see planes ND money go down the toilet when it's not pilot error. That Yack looks good. Hopefully some day at 63 I'll be flying Jets too.
Not nearly as much damage as I would have thought but is it really worth rebuilding?
Fuse not reparable neither is the bottom fins. List for replacement parts is about $200 bucks . So I am thinking new plane and keep this one for parts.
I'm so sorry! That sucks. I think you have a lever to secure your canopy , & I'm not sure you used it. Sad day.
Could be but a loose canopy should not cause a crash. Thanks for watching!
@ the 8:39 mark your jet rolled hard right to inverted...at that point, if you gave any up elevator input, it would have pulled it into the ground....I see you were upset and I don't think you looked at the Tx telemetry after that crash , as it would show if you had any Rx signal " holds " and " fades " on that flight .......sorry to see that crash .......
Yeah I did not even think to look at the telemetry, too emotional at that point, Multiple reasons for the crash, Had I never made that turn with her i would say pilot error but I was turning and flying fine. I was just starting a left turn when she went right...so who knows.
I was going to say you lost orientation. Even with those big lights on the wings, I couldn't see them. And the telemetry data would have told you if you truely did loose signal. All in all, every crash sucks no matter who you are, the pilot or an observer. That made me cringe inside. Sorry to see that.
I can feel for you, it's always a shame when a plane crashes
Yes it does suck. BUT it is part of the hobby.
This is why I run flight controllers and TBS. FC for return to home function and TBS for solid control link. My .003
Can you give me a link or brand name for your TBS.FC I am not understanding what that is. I would like to read up on it.
That battery adapter looked pretty close to the Bind Button. If anything hits that bind button while you're flying, It's goodbye Signal. You should try to use a proper size battery with the proper connector; no adapter.
That's possible.
Was the video glitching on the camera or software in POST? If on the camera you may have been shot down by some outside source that hit the plane AND camera. Something to think about maybe. Hate to see it!
No the video glitch was after at the house during production. If I have too much running the video software does not like it.
Greg sorry to see this, Foam Tak and paper tape, Jeff in LA USA
Thanks Jeff I may attempt a complete rebuild and repair but not for a while. need to walk away from her for a while.
I'm really sorry FG, I feel your pain. Hang in there my friend, try to pin down the culprit. It can be emotionally devastating. It will fly again..
Either it will fly again or its parts in other projects. Thank for watching.
Devastating
Well I purchased a new one and have MANY great flights on it.
@@FatGuyFliesRC It was just a little sad.
@FatGuyFliesRC That is one of the best flying airplanes out there. It tracks, like you said, an arrow.
Thunderbirds down :(
Sorry to see my friend
Thank you.
It all happens so quickly Greg, so sorry to see buddy 🤔😕
Yeah well we think its a signal problem with that particular part of the field. We call it the Bermuda Triangle.
That hurts I'm so sorry but that's the game we play
Well if you never crash then 2 things are going on 1 Youre lying about it or 2 you never fly....lol
Seems like this signal loss in a certain area is becoming more of an issue maybe there is something to the 900mhz feq that a few radio brands are supporting.
That is possible. i have been noticing other little radio glitches in that area of the field in other planes.
I love your videos
Which you were in our club.HaHa
Thank you.
Sorry to see this man :( don’t give up
Thanks, I never will give up!
So sorry to see this happen. 😩
So was I but she will live again!
Did you check your battery and ur flight time you might have been up longer than anticipated i didnt hear a timer go off i could be wrong
no I still had 49% left on the battery. I have since learned that there is intermittent radio signal loss when flying to close to the power lines in that particular stretch on the field. That is the second UNEXPLAINED crash I have had in that exact same section of field. The signal loss theory in that area has affected many at the club in that same spot . I have been told to avoid it fly a little higher in that section to avoid the area of signal disruption.
Oh i see
Been there...done that. Feels like a punch in the gut.
Yep completely stunned.
Oh it just needs another fuselage, those G+ are extremely heavy and the guys at my field fly them on 3300 or very light 4000’s. Most modellers suffer from flying at certain areas and angles but I do believe you can get interference detectors
I was thinking maybe the dense moisture in the air may have caused it?
l been flying for 40 years lost a few my self never a good feeling sorry greg
Only 2 things are happening when someone says they never crash...either they aint flying or they be lying!!! Crashing is actually very important. I forces you to learn from a mistake and respect these planes! Learning from a crash is always my number one reasons for showing them. Thanks for the kind words !Thanks for the visit!!
Sorry Greg. It happens to all of us from time to time. Its a real shame but that is the nature of the hobby sometimes. I hope you can fix it my friend. All the best.
Thanks so much!
I've watched the crash sequence several times. I can't really tell what happened. I did notice that when you passed over that same spot just a moment's earlier (the last time around before the crash) the wing seemed to dip the same way and went slightly nose down the same way just as you were about to turn to base leg, but you pulled it back up and continued. The next time you didn't soon enough and like the rest of us... panic reacted the wrong way. I've lost more planes in that similar phase of flight.
At that time of day it's extremely difficult to keep a jets left/right bank orientation correct in your mind when it's that far down field. I've lost many planes due to that. That's why if I fly at sunset or just after... I keep it in safe while at the far ends of the field and only take it out of safe when closer to the runway. In full daylight it's not as much of a problem. It's either that silhouette effect or plane to far out there effect too late in the day.
But you did seem to try to roll it out, back upright. I saw the roll rate suddenly increase. So it didn't look like a total loss of signal.
Like another poster said..... there is just a particular angle and location in a particular place in the pattern that I for some reason struggle with my hand/ eye/ brain coordination. I just have to get through that one spot on the field. That may be your spot.
I have since learned more about my flying field. One of the senior instructors at the club caught me the other day and said that area on the field is called the Bermuda Triangle and the only way any one has been able to fly safely through there is up much higher than the power lines and a little closer in. He said that particular section been know to cause signal loss in all kinds of different rx systems over the years and its hit and miss. The only way to avoid it is flying much closer in that section or MUCH higher when over it. This just means when I am lining up for a westward landing approach I am going to make it tighter and more shallow. Other wise It would ba much higher steeper turing approach and slowing a aircraft down with no flaps will be much more difficult.
@@FatGuyFliesRC yeah good idea. It nearly got you the time around just before that, if you replay it

Bummer ! Sorry about that ☹️ It gave me flash backs when my Freewing Vulcan crashed , it crashed the same way as your F-16 .. it sucks because you just keep trying to figure out what went wrong 🧐 and then when you go to fly again you start having second thoughts on your flights 🙄 but the best way to come back is to get her fixed 🙂 new fuse , and gear etc .. revenge flight coming soon 👍🏻👍🏻
I agree completely, same thing with my Carbon Z t28.
Did u have it on safe?
No it was in AS3X mode.
I have had brown outs on some planes and they just fall out of the sky. Either there is a radio jamming device by a near by airport, or the reciever is programmed to crash to make you buy more rc stuff. But somethings causing you the blues.
Makes me even more determine to fly.
Oh man that sucks, I'm sorry brother. Yet I know your pain oh so well.

Cheap servos overloading the cheap sbec = carnage. The only built into esc sbec I trust is newer model hobbywing and all castle creations ESC. Otherwise use 500 or 600 mah 2s lipo with a 6 amp or greater bec.
You may be right.
Nearly $500 laying on the ground between plane and ruined battery right? Or was plane repaired?
Nope your correct it destroyed the battery also.

How are the lights still working when battery is removed? Sorry for your loss hoss. I got 5 rc jets…. Which ive never flown 😂😂😂.
No all is off when battery is removed. I have since replaced the plane and flown many times without incident.
I feel your pain bro I feel your pain
I eased this pain with another plane. Retail therapy....lol
Greg, it's been awhile. Where's your A-10 twin 64?
Its sitting in the man cave...mad at me because I have been putting other planes before it.....She stopped talking to me too....lol
My bet is the power lines interfering with your reception. You said that was the second time in the same spot so powerlines is what I really think is causing it. Try a different radio brand like Futaba or JR just get rid of the stock Spektrum garbage. That brand is fine for land vehicles but for airplanes and helicopters I will only use Futaba or JR. Do your range test with the aircraft near the crash site and have someone there holding it up and yelling out the control surface movement and throttle response so you know for sure. Get your antenna as far from the ESC as possible.
no I never ranged tested with that spot, but that is a great suggestion thanks. The receiver was in the factory position.
@@FatGuyFliesRC Move the transmitter as far from the esc as possible and make sure the antenna is not coiled up and as straight as you can make it. Hope this helps.
Cheers~
I think you might have to bite the bullet and purchase a new fuselage. The wings, elevators, rudder, ventral fins, wingtip missiles, and the canopy appear on video to be immaculate after the mishap. You can for sure glue the nose back together. But that fuselage looks like it’s toast. I doubt it would fly correctly. Sometimes the fuselage gets screwed up beyond repair. I lost one of my night radians to a power loss (different than a signal loss) and it nosed in from 150 ft. The fuselage bent so much that I can’t glue it together again. There’s like a 0.75 inch gap between the parts, and if I did put a spacer in there, the thrust angle would be off, so that fuse is done. Your intake looks just as bad, unfortunately. I have no idea why it performed an opposite roll command and pitched down. Was SAFE on? Sometimes, SAFE can make planes fly wonky. My friend Dave (from the Dave-It-Yourself channel) had SAFE make his Viper Jet 70mm constantly roll right, even with full left roll input, causing 2 crashes.
The fuse is on back order until august.bummer
@@FatGuyFliesRC Oh no! That is a bummer!
That was hard to watch. Such a beautiful plane and brand new. Sorry.
If you aint crashing you aint flying! Thanks for the support!
Everybody at the airfield been telling me that the spektrum nx controllers are trash I have a nx8 haven't flew with it yet still using my dx6e I'm almost getting afraid to fly my new models with that nx controller because of the horror stories 🙁
People are often bias against spektrum since it now dominates the industry and Futaba has had to take a back seat. Futaba was the standard for so long. i have used spektrum for the past 10 years and love them from my DXE to the DX6 to the DX9 and now my NX10. I do have to agree though My DX9 did better with range than the NX10 as far as range tests go. However I am not sure this was a range problem.
See if horizon would give you a new one I lost signal on my viper and they sent a new one
No they claimed the usual, too many variables that could have caused it.
I used 3300 all the way back. I used my 4000 but have the safe on or else it will drop
Yeah the fuse and the gear are gone. but i yanked out that capacitor also.
Sorry man. that stinks. Thumbs up
Thanks!
well happy birthday anyways
LOL
help me understand why you fly facing the sun...at sundown, looks like you could stand on the other side of the runway?
No this was at sunrise and i was still new with flying here.
Newer safe rx's have been crashing planes alot lately. Y i go PNP or yank the safe rx OUT upon getting. I don't trust safe since the 637 rx's
Thats fair.
Looks to me you accelerated stall her without realizing it. Very common mistake not giving her power to gain control specially when your turning like that you. need to keep power on when turning like that
Actually I lost aileron control completely then lost elevator.
Flying in the vicinity of power lines is risky, they emit electromagnetic pulses, therefore; it tampers with nearby signals.
That is the theory we are thinking.
I share your disappointment Greg. Been there- done that! You will fix it even if you purchase a new fuse to get the model back to it’s newness again & it will fly even better.
Hope so, but a rebuild will be on the back burner for a while.
Spektrum strikes again. Makes me want use other gear. These discos happen too often.
i have also flown futaba and on occasion had the same issue. There are no full proof radios.
@@FatGuyFliesRC Futaba and JR are pretty much the best and will minimize failures way better than Spektrum ever has. Do your research you will find most failures are with Spektrum.
Dude , loss of camera footage plus two exact elevator losses to bring you down , someone doesn’t want you in the air
I will never stop flying however! Thanks for the view!
Spectrum is what happened. I will never trust spectrum. Get Jr or futaba or even graupner
That's fair.
no range check or control surface check.....yikes!
No all that was done before the flight. This was a VERY old video. I have a new Efllite 70mm TB and have had MANY great flights with it.
Greg, this is terrible! There is going to be a big investigation into why this happened. So sorry to see this! 🥲
I just wish I knew the cause? She was flying so well!
