I will use This guide for eshin rats in my mordheim campaign. It would be nice seeing more mordheim in the uploads of amazing creators like you. It is such a fantastic game!
Praise be to the great horned one!!! I'll be painting mine for both systems. Grey Seer Thanquol demands new fodder, I mean noble warriors. While for Old World clan Mors demands many more-more a body to take on the dwarf-things.
Thank for another awesome video, Duncan! I randomly found your channel, a few months ago, after watching Warhammer lore videos, and ended up binge-watching dozens of your videos. It's now got me back into model painting for the first time since my teen years and I'm loving it! I'm hoping to get my first Warhammer set soon, having watched your Bretonnian Knight Of The Realm video. :D
This is so helpful, my rats are on there way to me and i got 20 of the older models to paint so im going to paint all 60 together, it will be quite a ratathon. Thankyou for the video.
My playgroup and I are just now getting into AOS. I bought Skaventide so everyone can dip their toes. My buddies are gonna double dip and play their armies for Old World and AOS, and the Skaven will serve that dual purpose as well. I want them to be hideously gorgeous!
Sort of old world, I really want to make a Mordheim warband. I really love the new rat ogres and nothing says Mordheim better than a Skaven rat ogre. Thanks for the video.
"you dirty rat, you killed my brother" quotes aside amazing work on the skaven model, hope to see more Age of Sigmar Models in the future like the Flesh Eater courts and the kharadron overlords but maybe a kitbash of the kharadron overlords as chaos dwarfs.
Started my first Skaven army! Had a unit previously, from Advanced Heroquest. Lost that lot years ago. Already missing space to use my airbrush. Would speed up under/base coating. Using contrast instead.
I've been using you guys's glistening gums, for the scaven tail with like a purple wash over it and I've used the same for their mouth it seems to look a lot more realistic for like an actual rat tail
Great guide as usual! Though I was wondering about a potential idea I had for my own Skaven as I just got into the faction myself (bless you Skaventide box). If I read correctly, a lot of the Clanrats are pulled from various clans to form their units and not often from the same clan from what I understand. So I'm thinking of going wild with their rags in terms of possible colorations. I love the idea from a lore and setting perspective, though I was wondering if making not-so-cohesive looking force works well as it's something I personally haven't seen or tried before.
I love watching your tutorials and have followed many of them to get projects started or even finished. I love doing obscure factions and was wondering if we could get a Clan Skurvy or Clan Mortis tutorial, or even a different clan if there's one you love personally? I know they aren't in AoS anymore but I still love the idea of pirate rats :P Anyways, great video and definitely one I'll use for the furs and metals
Hey, I love all your tutorials they are super clear and easy to follow. I am currently stuck on nagash I know there is an old gw tutorial that you did but would you consider doing it again with the two thin coats range? I just got waves 1 and 2 and wave 3 comes in a couple on months and would love to use them on nagash just don’t know where to start 😅. Thank you for taking the time to read my comment hope you keeping well!
Can i ask you one thing? The red fabric is amazing but the other, at least for me, is too similar to the skin. What paints should I use for a more desaturated yellow tone?
The games workshop paint scheme for these I do not like it all, I am very glad you guys put something out I wish you guys had done a little bit more for a little bit less skin but overall fantastic and I would much rather make something that looks like this
One question, for you can a beginner paint a clanrat in that way or that is too difficult and the result will be messy? This is like my second unit that i paint in my life..
You used no contrast paints for the vid, and I especially appreciate This on the skin, slapping some guilliman flesh on that face, at least for me, could ruin that. But… for the fabrics do you think that using some contrast for achieving a shaded but mor vibrant tone is ok? I know that you could just do an highlight after the shade but im trying to reduce the layering on the mini because i am a beginner What do you think?
Absolutely. Use the contrasts where you can get away with it. They’re extremely useful and versitile paints, but they do leave a glossy finish that a lot of people really don’t like. But if you’re finding you have that problem but still want more shading, it’s easy enough to mitigate by just being more selective of where you place the contrasts. Also I suspect you’re probably trying to evenly spread the contrast after you brush it on and that’s what’s making the horrible blotchy look. With the contrast, always always always add a few drops of your contrast medium and start light and work your way darker by adding smaller and smaller layers of the contrast. Also, once you make a brushstroke, leave it. Do not try to go back and spread the paint more. Let it dry then go back with a brush full of contrast medium and you can reactivate enough of it to even out any dark/light spots with it. My whole method of painting is to use the contrasts to block out my main colors. Because they’re so vibrant and tone rich, they’re an extremely good base over a light grey primer. Then after blocking in my main colors I go back with proper layer/base acrylics and add highlights and shading. This has a two fold effect for me of eliminating the glossiness of the contrasts while also getting some really really nice dramatic blends. The contrasts are probably the best paints to learn with imo just because they’re not as fussy as learning everything you need to paint to the same quality with just acrylics/layering techniques. Just focus on painting as much as you can while you’re new, and as you learn you’ll figure out your own methods and you’ll know when you’re ready to move to more advanced painting methods because youll know what the contrast paints are doing to the model that you don’t like
@@Southboundpachyderm wow! Thanks for the advices! In less words i mean that maybe is easier highlighting the face and the skin with layering because you can easily follow the shape of the mini. But… on the cloth (a flat area) maybe I will have some difficult work to do. I don’t mentioned in the comment up there that my color scheme will be a bit different: I will use black and red (eshin). I know that black is a difficult color to paint, because of this maybe a contrast with a bit of medium (for control on the result) will give me an ok look. Maybe for the red i can handle the layering? Maybe for these cloth i will use contrast but thanks for the advices because now i can choose the paint I want to buy more easily👍 A big “grazie” from italy
@@MariaOrtelloMeri63 yeah I have a hard time with black too, but I have personally found that the Vallejo 70.950 “black” to have a really solid coverage. Red has been tricky for me and so far I hate all the citadel reds because they’re really thick. I have found for really nice full reds I’m really enjoying the pro acryl red. If they don’t have that where you live, the Vallejo brand also makes a really nice red. the new army painter fanatics are all really good paints in general too and while I haven’t tried a true red or black from the fanatics line, I’ve really enjoyed the new “triad” system as it makes picking shades and highlights just that much quicker and easier. I hope all that helps you! greetings and a warm welcome from Colorado, USA! Good luck on your painting project!
Hi Duncan, Why do you apply brown on the shield and coat if you are anyways painting it red later? The brown seems to come from the wash and not the first layer of brown colour. Thank you!
Just got skaventide! this is going to be a great reference guide lol also It's the first guide i found, that doesn't rely on contrast paints! which has saved me a few extra quid :P
I noticed you used a wet palette when painting the skin, but not on anything else. Is there a method to the madness of when you use each palette? (Or a video where you explain it?)
Generally, I use the wet palette when using normal acrylics and a tile when using metallics and washes/ contrast paints. Sometimes I just forget to switch them 😂
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA I see. Thanks for the response. I’m a painting noob so I use exclusively a wet palette, but I might look into trying tile again for some paints then! My first painting project I used a tile and dried my paints out super quick so I haven’t used them since. 😅
how funny that this particular model is the one you chose, i have 40 clan rats total and this is the only variant i didnt make and i think the only variant you can choose not make
Would you say that the tools make half of the journey ? I mean, how much it's important to use the top quality brush, even for a beginner like me ? I don't have access to those Artis Opus , I'm using classical Citadel Brushes. And the result is 5 time less beautiful than yours, so I'm trying to quantify in this failure the responsibility proportion between my low skill and my tools 😂
The higher quality equipment can come later. As for a brush, Citadel are reliable, just make sure it holds a good point such as your Medium and Small Layer Brushes (Artis Opus size 1,0 or 00 equivalents)
So very annoyed Skaven will get no support in Old World. Killed any interest I had for that game. 19:09 Also, yes, definitely paint the eyes! Their beady red eyes are such a distinguishing feature for them! Skaven are the only models I bother painting eyes for, because you just need to pick them out in red!
This is awesome! Though honestly I still use your old Skaven painting video back when you still worked for GW as reference for my Clanrats.
Wow, that video is going back awhile...

New Skaven warriors miniatures looks good. Well painted clanrat.
Dont even like AoS but Duncan posts, I watch. Awesome tutorial as always!
Glad you like them!

FINALLY PULLED THE TRIGGER ON BUYING YOUR PAINTS. Amazing!
I've always been a citadel and Valejo guy. These paints are like a step where they feel combined. It's an opinion, yes, but Def love them.
I’d love a tutorial on the grass lands base. It looks awesome!
We have a full guide in our basing section over at the Academy (www.duncanrhodes.com) plus many, many more basing tuts
picked up the small starter set for AOS not to play of course but to get my hands on the rats. Will most likely start an army for TOW

insane how I was editing something which I did a skaven-like voice in when this came out. It's fate
Fate? Or the Council of Thirteen....
Would love to see this video replicated with a classic metal 1980s Jes Goodwin skaven miniature.

Hello Duncan, what green colors would your recommend for clan Pestilence, instead of the red color?
Hi Duncan,
Why do you apply brown on the shield and coat if you are anyways painting it red later? The brown seems to come from the wash and not the first layer of brown colour. Thank you!
The red being applied was to demonstrate that you can leave it brown or paint it red if you feel thats what you want to do.
