- In this tutorial we convert and paint a Dark Mechanicum Daemon Engine in the style of Blanchitsu! Now painting and converting something like the Dark Mechanicum for Warhammer 40,000 is a really fun and creative way to put your own spin on a faction that at present, doesn't have any miniature available from Games Workshop but that shouldn't stop you now should it? In fact, one of the best and one my my personal favourite aspects of this fantastic hobby is converting miniatures (plus its a great way to use items from your pile of shame). Now painting in the Blanchitsu style is something really different and fun and there are some amazing painters out there who can create some fantastic grim dark miniatures.

The Dark Mechnicus is one of those factions that I'm BAFFLED has never had a miniature range of their own. The potential is SO good!
Agreed. At least you can kinda/sorta run them in Horus Heresy with traitor Mechanicum.
It probably has to do with the fact that they would have to create a whole new rule set for them even though it would literally just be like the difference between regular space Marines and chaos space Marines
They are like the most 40k faction in warhammer 40k, they need to bring out dark mechanicus! They have to be the most requested army to get models!
I've always agreed, but what gives me pause is that to an extent the current Mechanicus range needs some work, it needs some large, effective units that are a bit point intensive to make the range more affordable? They sort of need to sort that faction out first, or folks with a current Admech army will fume. The obvious fix is to make the new 30k units cross compatible.

Death Stranding-style titles and choice of intro music = absolute masterstroke. Oh, and the build + paint job obviously didn't disappoint either. This is the style I live for.

I really like the converted model...but I generally don't like the Blanchitsu style. I got a Talos as a gift and pla to convert it to a demon engine for my chaos marines...but I'll paint it with more colours :)

Was always a big fan of John Blanche's work - for me it really evoked what the WH40K setting means.

Did you wash the model before painting?
I’ve seen people use Vaseline to sculpt green stuff. I assume you needed to wash the model before painting.
Citadel brushes are so shit and over priced. I’m surprised you use them on your channel.

@DuncanRhodesDRPA I've had this thought, what if you paint a death guard or daemon in the blanchitsu style? A more elegant style from a more civilised age 😃
When I saw that this video was a kitbash/conversion, I total believed Dark Duncan had taken over as it’s not what is usually expected of him.
It’s such an awesome model.
I criticism I do have of the paint job though: the flesh looks way more like bone than flesh with the wash on it. Of course the tentacles and tail definitely have that spinal column shape to them which conveys the idea of bone.
The glow is definitely something I’ll be coming back to reference in the future. An excellent Blanchitsu paint scheme.

Ad mech is a fun Army to kitbash. I have a Rat Mech army. All models are some kind of mix between Skaven and Ad Mech. It took me about a year to make, but it was worth it.

I'd like to see you convert/kitbash a Nurgle-corrupted Blood Angel from the Dornian Heresy
You could try taking some inspiration from Trench Crusade (especially the Black Grail faction) and the Crimson Court Court from Darkest Dungeon
Also Bloodborne might also be a good source of inspiration for Nurgle-corrupted Blood Angels
Duncan, would it be possible to get a 2TC tutorial of how to paint 1882-1885 Brits in Sudan showing both grey serge fatigue uniforms and khaki uniforms. Happy to send along a couple of spare minis to paint up if that helps….need an address to send them to.

Thanks for this, I always wanted a dark mech army and this looks a great way of creating one! Btw I prefer the term ‘pile of future fun’ (pinched from TH-camr Lizard of Doom) 😄
Very nice as always! The pigments do give me a hassle sometimes. I gave up trying with a brush and apply small drops of fixer through a pipette instead now. Works fine as long as you're really careful not to flood the areas.
P.S. Can we get a really battle worn and slighlty damaged Iron Warriors Dreadnought next please :P

Is there no requirement to varnish/seal the basecoats before applying and removing enamels?

Perrty cool conversion!! Love the head idea. I am only missing a bit of OSL for the glowing parts. As it is, it does not stand out much.
We thought about it but as its not always part of the Blanchitsu style, we left it out :-)

What I would've done was mount a Dark Mechanicum guy on top similar to the original Ironstrider so you have a kind of mirror effect similar to what GW has been doing with other chaos kits.
Great video and a great sentiment about getting out of your comfort zone at the end. I wish GW would introduce the Dark Mechanicum as a fully realised faction!
Nice! This is one of the best things you've done it quite a while! Love when you do conversions, and add a different paint method than usual. Its good to use different techniques so the videos don't get to formulaic.

If your in the UK GW now recycle sprues there's a sprue bin in each store but they can only do their own for now as they know what's in them

I would still never have thought of doing this before seeing this video on the Dark Mechanicus Daemon Engine, this was visualised perfectly for this faction.
The Drukhari Talos miniture kit is good design as a model, I just went back to painting it some more recently.
I may use the Forge World weathering powder I still have left over on some of the Daemon Engines I have once I get around to painting them. They're in the basing stages of debris, then I'll prime paint them.
