I don'y buy the recycling angle because spin on filters are crushed and incinerated as well. Then the steel is recovered and recycled.

DYI car people dont have anywhere to bring the used oil filters. Literally no one takes used filters. So they still end up in trash. Even oil change shops say not unless we do your oil change.

Check with your county. The county should have a place to bring household chemicals. Oil, oil filter, cleaning products, paints, varnish, light bulbs ect….

Hmm the cartridges I put in my 2006 Mercedes don't even have the plastic bit or valve. And yet somehow they are dry enough to avoid a big mess when I remove them. Magic?

The thing I understand about cartridge filter is that I hate cartridge filters.

2:08 if you were looking at reasons why major car manufacturers are moving to cartidge filters again.

ANd they regretted and go back to good modern days with disposable filters with built-in bypass, metal case, etc. Save time, money, and the environment.

Do these cartridge filters provide bypass valves for cold temp flow or media clogging?

I guess that would be integrated into the filter housing / engine now? That's dumb

I call BS! This is a step backwards. I take my used spin on filters, cut them open to inspect the filter element. Then you can dump out and recycle the used oil inside. Then I take the used metal canister, spring, and other parts, and recycle them too.

@@alexf9183 It's really hard to recycle your oil when it blows all over the road because of a o-ring that everything depends on with these stupid cartridge filters. I probably lost 50 gallons of oil on the road over the past few years because of stupid o-ring failure. Now complain about your metal recycling 😭

Technically, that small oil filter is for a GM Ecotec, not a Fiat. But I’ll let it slide this time !

To be green there should be a filter crusher on each street. 🙂

landfill yes, but like the vehicles that are getting cheaper ' quality wise ' the filters getting cheaper is just part of it. They are cheaper for the manufacture without the metal casing in the long run so they save millions to their bottom line. like the good ole days when airlines put black olives on their salads they saved millions by adding only three olives instead of five. corporations aren't doing if for the customer benefit, they're doing it to make that bank. its that simple.

Cartridges usually cost MORE than full spin on filters!!! But, have fewer pleats!!! Cartridgs are antique designs!!! Sacrifice the engines of consumers, for a bunch of tree huggers??? NO THANK YOU!!! Will be converting my Volvos and Mazdas to spin on filters!!!

If your mom and dad had the last name "Patrick," one would think that they could have used a bit more imagination in coming up with your first name. Although, I once knew a guy named "Thomas Thomas."

    • @pullbackbaby

They're actually worse for the environment because the o-ring pops and blows 5 quarts of oil all over the road before your engine fails and you have to junk the car and have that in a landfill.

Spin on oil filters are the best as you can install a longer or bigger filter in a lot of aplications to get way more filtering area and they are also way more cheaper than the cartridge ones... Plus when you burn these cartridge filters you are also burning the plastics in them too, whereas with the spin on's its all paper and the metal that can be recycled..
These mini cartridge style of filters were designed by car company's cuz its cheap to make and the filter life matches the service idiot light on your dash...
Everything now is about MONEY! and how much they can separate that from you in the shortest amount of time for themselves.
