Windows 7 has a problem in the Disk Management program recognising external HDDs or SSDs connected via USB. I have tried everything in this video and nothing works. Disk Management just does not load up .. just sits there unable to populate. The moment you remove the HDD or SSD connected via USB, Disk Management works like a charm. The drives work well via USB no problem there, but if you want to re partition etc, you cannot access these drives via DM. Beats me .. I use Windows 7 Pro and really have wasted heaps of time on this!

OK I did what you suggested and the items that appeared were the C and E drives and one that read system reserve, which I am assuming is the additional 500 Gb drive that I recently added so I labeled that drive: F So I think everything is Okay,?

Not sure what's going on. My Toshiba Ext HDD works on my Win 7 Desktop but not on my Win 10 Toshiba Laptop. When I plug in another ext HDD (NTFS also), it picks that one on the laptop. So I just want to say that every clue you gave in the video is brilliant, but unfortunately none helped fixed my problem which led me here. My external drive was healthy so I had to figure out another way to fix the fluctuation. I simply had to restart the computer. So I just want to mention that, sometimes the solution to the problem could be a simple restart.
1. I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled (failed) 2. I go to disk management it takes eons for it to display and when it does my drive is not visible 3. I checked my device properties, it says "this device is working properly" 4. I checked the volumes tab, its all blank. 5. Ive updated and reinstalled my driver multiple times and nothing works. 6. Oh and i didn't forget to restart (didn't work) *pls help I have a 232GB drive on my hands* 😢
I have seen this problem a 100 times...one thing you forgot when saying hard drive dead if these fixes don't work...(The USB cable?) A faulty or wrong USB cable may work fine on one pc but not another.meaning your hard drive will spin up show up in disk management but not in show up in computer detected properties.It can simulate a bad device......The solution? change the cable or make sure your using the cable that usb hard drive came with....Cheers Jackdaw
.I have a fairly new WD Passport 2 TB. It suggested that I run a repair on the device and when I finished a repair it now loops over and over and runs a single beep code while running and constantly runs. There are no clicks so I know the drive is fine concerning the hardware. However, it will not show up in my computer or the disk management so I can't change the drive letter. However, it hows up the notification area to eject the device so I know it's showing up somewhere on the machine.

This worked for my external drive, but in the disk manager it showed as having two unallocated parts, one being 2TB and the other being 1.6TB (it's a 4TB drive). I could create a new simple volume with the 2TB section but I can't do the same with the 1.6TB section. Why is it locking me out of nearly half of my drive space?

I have 2 external Hard drives one is Seagate expansion 4 terra byte and the other is western digital my passport ultra 3 terrabyte, both are not working anymore in USB 3.0 but they work in USB 2.0, when I connect them in USB3.0 I hear a sound warning but is not working, I looked to disk management and they are not there, so what can I do ? Omg, you SAVED MY SANITY just now! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I was literally about to return my WD 1TB SSD interntal drive (but have an enclosure so using it as an external) because my laptop was not recognizing it. Your recommendation to go to run> diskmgmt.msc saved me. I did not know that it would show up as "unallocated" to my PC. Then clicked on "new simple volume" and ran the wizard and after formatting it works like a charm! Great work and thank you again for your help!

Life hack....so it is 10x easier to format this type of hard drive with your tablet with a USB to micro USB A or C converter when you plug it up to your tablet it has you format it for Android or IOS once that's done Windows 10 will recognize the drive and all smooth sailing after that!!! I have a *TOSHIBA V63700-C Canvio Basics 1TB USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive Hard Disk C-142343* and it works when plugged on an LED TV but freezes and takes forever when plugged on a PC. was working on Win. 10 but when plugged back to WIN. 7 it started freezing, slowing down explorer.exe.

Hi, thanks for the video. I have a question. I just recently bought a WD My Passport Wireless 4 tb external drive. I hooked it up to my older laptop, which may have a virus. I hooked up another drive to copy files over to the new one, but stopped after a few hours. When I hooked up my new drive to my virus-free, new laptop, it sees the drive in Windows Explorer. When I click on that drive, it says I need to format it. When I try to format it, it says Windows cannot perform that task. I feel the motor moving in the drive. I'm not convinced that it's a dead drive, perhaps there's a backdoor way of figuring this out. It also says that it's in a read-only mode
Perfect. I tried to backup my old computer and my WD Hard Drive no longer had it's software on it. Doing the right click on the bottom worked. Sadly I lost everything, but pretty sure that was going to happen anyway.
Truly excellent. ... Except - in my weird case - I have an old G-Drive and nothing works from this tutorial AND it works fine on a Mac. I'm guessing that it's just not getting enough power from the USB cable. Maybe, worth adding that wrinkle ... or maybe, someone will see this and avoid throwing away something - the DATA could matter - when you really could revive AND USE it.
The device manager recognized my WD 500gb USD drive. Then my cat stepped on my power strip button. I restarted my PC went to device manager again and the WD was no longer on the list. I have tried all the methods you had suggested in the video, but it seems that my SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is not able to be recognized by my MSI GL62MVR 7RFX Laptop. I have tried the USB Type-A connector and connect to my laptop and it is recognized, just that when I try to connect the SSD directly to my laptop's USB Type-C port it does not show up in anyhow. The SSD is not dead due to that I am still able to connect it through the USB Type-A port. I tried connecting my iphone's USB Type-C cable to the laptop and it shows that my phone is charging. I tried connecting my GoPro Hero 8 Black to the laptop through SanDisk's USB Type-C cable and it shows that my GoPro is detected, thus I do not think it is the cable's issue at all. The most possible issue that I can now think of is that my laptop has not have the proper settings to connect to my SSD? I wish that I am able to connect my SSD through my USB Type-C port on my laptop. I am not really good at computers and I appreciate for those who are going to help in advance. Thank you =D

Hello. Whenever I try to update the driver. It says "Error code:18, the windows detected a new driver, but an error occured... acces denied" or something very similar. I can't find a driver update to download from the devices website, I can't really find ANY kind of driver updates for this that is downloadable. I don't have a clue what to do I'm trying to make this sh*t work for the 5th hours now, but I can't fix the problem. Can you help me please?

Formatting is NOT a solution -- it wipes files on the HD! I have a Seagate external HD that has many data files stored on it from a Win 98 system. The Win 98 system see it fine. But I want to transfer these files to a new system for backup -- except WIN 7 and WIN 8 won't read the drive. It does me no good to backup the files on the old WIN 98 system and reformat the external HD on the new system, because then the Win 98 system won't see the external drive, and I can't copy the backup files back onto it.
Didn't work for me :( I bought a WD EasyStore external hard drive like 4 years ago because it was on sale, and I just now opened it and tried using it and I can't seem to make it work. Hey! I did this and my device is now recognized, but only the partition that wasn't recognized before (and I think I accidentally formated it, but not the whole thing). My external drive is 1TB and it only shows the 128gbs of space from this one partition (and it's as if there's no content in it), will I have to completely format the whole thing to be able to read it? I tried on a different computer and the same thing happened (just the partition shows).
My External Drive is an Iomega, it is lighting up, my laptop is new (external drive is older but works), I went to the diskmgmt and see one Disc 0 there. I still can't get my computer to recognize anything. Right clicked the space. The options in the menu were "change" not the other thing he mentions. No idea now. I changed to Iomega, went to the windows start to look for it, still nothing under Iomega.
Hey people, if you have Windows 7, it does not work with USB 3.0. If your new hard drive comes with a USB 3.0 cable, connect it INSTEAD to a 2.0 slot. That fixed my issue.
If your portable HDD suddenly shows up as RAW in disk management. Try running a check disk on the drive to repair it. open the command prompt and tyle "chkdsk /f : "

Doh. I know there was a utility for accessing HFS volumes, but not sure about the new APFS.

At 5:01 you stop. Mine says "device working properly" so then there's no yellow triangle but device still isn't found in disk management! How does one get devices to show in disk management?!?!
You are my freaking hero. Had an internal ssd inside an external enclosure and my laptop wouldn't assign it to a drive. Not tech savvy myself but "new simple volume" did everything I needed.
I tried two USB sockets on my PC and both don't see my external HDD. But I can see the external drive on my laptop. 🤔
my problem is the external drive couldn't even initialized, I can't manually arrange paths & other things. How do I fix this??

I have 2 external Hard drives one is Seagate expansion 4 terra byte and the other is western digital my passport ultra 3 terrabyte, both are not working anymore in USB 3.0 but they work in USB 2.0, when I connect them in USB3.0 I hear a sound warning but is not working, I looked to disk management and they are not there, so what can I do ? They did work last year on USB 3.0 but I didn't use them for a long time, I looked to device manager and I have the last driver for USB3.0, when I made update driver they said thet the driver is updated, any adivice from you I thank you.

Omg, you SAVED MY SANITY just now! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I was literally about to return my WD 1TB SSD interntal drive (but have an enclosure so using it as an external) because my laptop was not recognizing it. Your recommendation to go to run> diskmgmt.msc saved me. I did not know that it would show up as "unallocated" to my PC. Then clicked on "new simple volume" and ran the wizard and after formatting it works like a charm! Great work and thank you again for your help!

It works for the first time, but after I unplug my drive I cannot open it with the letter I assigned before. I would have to assign new letters every time I plug in the drive. Anyone knows the solution?
Life hack....so it is 10x easier to format this type of hard drive with your tablet with a USB to micro USB A or C converter when you plug it up to your tablet it has you format it for Android or IOS once that's done Windows 10 will recognize the drive and all smooth sailing after that!!! I hope this helps.

I have a *TOSHIBA V63700-C Canvio Basics 1TB USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive Hard Disk C-142343* and it works when plugged on an LED TV but freezes and takes forever when plugged on a PC. was working on Win. 10 but when plugged back to WIN. 7 it started freezing, slowing down explorer.exe.

My Problem WAS My External DVD/CD Drive Is Not Working When I Pluged It In To My Laptop It Shows Me This USB/SSD/HDD Drive Instead Of Not Showing My EXTERNAL DVD/CD DRIVE And The Name Of The USB/SSD/HDD Drive is Initio Inic-1511 And That initio inic-1511 Drive Was Actually My DVD/CD Moudle

Hi, thanks for the video. I have a question. I just recently bought a WD My Passport Wireless 4 tb external drive. I hooked it up to my older laptop, which may have a virus. I hooked up another drive to copy files over to the new one, but stopped after a few hours. When I hooked up my new drive to my virus-free, new laptop, it sees the drive in Windows Explorer. When I click on that drive, it says I need to format it. When I try to format it, it says Windows cannot perform that task. I feel the motor moving in the drive. I'm not convinced that it's a dead drive, perhaps there's a backdoor way of figuring this out. It also says that it's in a read-only mode
Perfect. I tried to backup my old computer and my WD Hard Drive no longer had it's software on it. Doing the right click on the bottom worked. Sadly I lost everything, but pretty sure that was going to happen anyway.

Truly excellent. ... Except - in my weird case - I have an old G-Drive and nothing works from this tutorial AND it works fine on a Mac. I'm guessing that it's just not getting enough power from the USB cable. Maybe, worth adding that wrinkle ... or maybe, someone will see this and avoid throwing away something - the DATA could matter - when you really could revive AND USE it.
I went to disk management and changed the unit's letter, boom! it works!
Thanks for this. My problem was, external disk was in a LINUX partition, not Windows partition. Plugged it into a Linux laptop, and presto.
The device manager recognized my WD 500gb USD drive.
Then my cat stepped on my power strip button.
I restarted my PC went to device manager again and the WD was no longer on the list. I tried different USB ports and none of them can find the drive.
Do you have any solution to this problem?

I have tried all the methods you had suggested in the video, but it seems that my SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is not able to be recognized by my MSI GL62MVR 7RFX Laptop. I have tried the USB Type-A connector and connect to my laptop and it is recognized, just that when I try to connect the SSD directly to my laptop's USB Type-C port it does not show up in anyhow. The SSD is not dead due to that I am still able to connect it through the USB Type-A port. I tried connecting my iphone's USB Type-C cable to the laptop and it shows that my phone is charging. I tried connecting my GoPro Hero 8 Black to the laptop through SanDisk's USB Type-C cable and it shows that my GoPro is detected, thus I do not think it is the cable's issue at all. The most possible issue that I can now think of is that my laptop has not have the proper settings to connect to my SSD? I wish that I am able to connect my SSD through my USB Type-C port on my laptop. I am not really good at computers and I appreciate for those who are going to help in advance. Thank you =D

Whenever I try to update the driver. It says "Error code:18, the windows detected a new driver, but an error occured... acces denied" or something very similar. I can't find a driver update to download from the devices website, I can't really find ANY kind of driver updates for this that is downloadable. I don't have a clue what to do I'm trying to make this sh*t work for the 5th hours now, but I can't fix the problem. Can you help me please?
It found my HDD but I can't initiate it, you say an easy step... What is that because I can't do anything but see it and when I click on it it says 5 things andthe first 3 are shaded and can't be clicked on, only properties and help can be clicked..... HELP PLEASE! 😣
Formatting is NOT a solution -- it wipes files on the HD!
I have a Seagate external HD that has many data files stored on it from a Win 98 system. The Win 98 system see it fine. But I want to transfer these files to a new system for backup -- except WIN 7 and WIN 8 won't read the drive.
It does me no good to backup the files on the old WIN 98 system and reformat the external HD on the new system, because then the Win 98 system won't see the external drive, and I can't copy the backup files back onto it.
Didn't work for me :( I bought a WD EasyStore external hard drive like 4 years ago because it was on sale, and I just now opened it and tried using it and I can't seem to make it work. It shows as Not Initialized and when I right click and try to initialize it, it shows me an error saying "the request failed due to a fatal device hardware error"

My wd external hard disk suddenly stopped showing up in my desktop. It showing up in other computers. And other harddisks are working good in my desktop. But my hard disk doesn't even show up in device management.. what to do. Please help
Hey! I did this and my device is now recognized, but only the partition that wasn't recognized before (and I think I accidentally formated it, but not the whole thing). My external drive is 1TB and it only shows the 128gbs of space from this one partition (and it's as if there's no content in it), will I have to completely format the whole thing to be able to read it? I tried on a different computer and the same thing happened (just the partition shows).
My External Drive is an Iomega, it is lighting up, my laptop is new (external drive is older but works), I went to the diskmgmt and see one Disc 0 there. I still can't get my computer to recognize anything. Right clicked the space. The options in the menu were "change" not the other thing he mentions. No idea now. I changed to Iomega, went to the windows start to look for it, still nothing under Iomega.
Hey people, if you have Windows 7, it does not work with USB 3.0. If your new hard drive comes with a USB 3.0 cable, connect it INSTEAD to a 2.0 slot. That fixed my issue.

If your portable HDD suddenly shows up as RAW in disk management. Try running a check disk on the drive to repair it. open the command prompt and tyle "chkdsk /f : "

So when I open my disk magement the disk shows but is not working and not letting me change the path it keeps saying fatal hardware error but after doing some scans in command prompt it says the hardrive is ok
