Here are three possible ways to resolve the issue of USB storage not showing up in Windows or not having drive letter assigned to it automatically. The first solution is quicker but kind of temporal, while the other two require a bit more but are permanent, I covered all three in this tutorial.
SOLUTION 1: Manually Mount the External Disk by Assigning it a Drive Letter
SOLUTION 2: Enable Automatic Mounting of New Volumes
SOLUTION 3: Check for Attributes that Prevent the Disk from Showing up in the Computer Folder or Having Drive Letter Assigned to it Automatically.

Open the Disk Management console. ...
Right-click the unallocated volume.
Choose New Simple Volume from the shortcut menu. ...
Click the Next button.
Set the size of the new volume by using the Simple Volume Size in MB text box
Then format with those options and done!

Thank you for this video! It helped me fix an external SSD that wasn't being recognized -- going into disk management and creating a volume in it fixed the problem. Going into diskpat and running those commands in step 3 helped me identify the problem. Subbed to the channel 👍🏾

IF you made an EXTERNAL HDD and it doesn't show up in the list, but you know its not damaged, and it gets recognized by the windows USB/PORT when you plug it in. Please make sure you give it an hard enough push to connect it properly to the circuit of the enclosure case! Just unscrew it and give it another small push until it "clicks" in place and mount it again!

Okay I found the fix for this: search "create and format hard disk partitions" scroll down to the hard disk that doesn't work, right click it, new volume. Then just follow the wizard until u assign any letter to it (i used G). After doing this my hard disk showed up in This PC (my computer) with the name "New volume", you can just rename it to whatever you want. Hope that helps :D
careful, when attaching a disk that already has information on it, you might accidentally format it using fix 1 (it often requires formatting)

My external hard drive works well when I use it in USB 2 but don't work in USB 3. My computer has only USB 3. I bought a USB hub with both USB 2 & 3 and use the external hard drive in USB 2 of that hub. It works fine.
Even in Diskpart my external hard disk is not showing up. But when I connect pen drive, it is showing up. No issue with my hard disk, I tested. What else could be the issue.

Hello, happened the same to me, you can download a freeware MiniTool Partition Wizard and creat a Partition on the disk, and the to as it is explained in this video. It worked for me.
My problem is the drive is showing , but the content is not. How do I fix that? There's no beeping or clicking noise. It lights up when hooked up to the laptop and shows up in the directory, but the 600 GB of data is not found. I went through it all and went throught to the last on using diskpart. I selected partition 1 and it said 'Partition 1 is not the selected partition'. I then typed 'volume attributes' it says 'there is no volume selected please select a volume and try again'. So pleased I found your site. I wasted so much time with the "experts" (including the official Microsoft!) who basically only tell us what as users we already know. You on the other hand, seem to have the real answers to the difficult Windows issues. . Every time I connected the ext disc I had to go to Computer Management - Disc management and re-allocate a drive letter, but this took 10 minutes while it was "Connecting to Virtual Disk Service" I finally solved this using your "enable auto mount" By the way, just out of interest do you know why it takes 10 minutes "Connecting to Virtual Disk Service..." before it populates with the list of drives ? It never used to take more than 60 seconds? Thank you again for the great service you provide here. I have started to use many of your informative videos about the Windows system.

So I own a Mac and a pc, when my external drive was new I plugged it into my ox and it showed up, then I backed up my Mac using that same external drive, ever since that , my pc and same with all pc won’t recognize the external drive or sometimes it does but it shows that the drive is empty, but macs can recognized it properly with out any problems. So is the problem is my mac’s backup ?

usually means that ur disk has no partitions. u can make a partition just google it up

When I select list part I get 4 different partitions, I've tried selecting all 4 and typing in attributes volume but for Partitions 1,2,3 I get a message stateting "There is No Volume Selected". When I select Partition 4 and type in attributes volume I get a message of

FILESYSTEMS - Display current and supported file systems on the volume.
FORMAT - Format the volume or partition.
GPT - Assign attributes to the selected GPT partition.
HELP - Display a list of commands.
IMPORT - Import a disk group.
INACTIVE - Mark the selected partition as inactive.
LIST - Display a list of objects.
MERGE - Merges a child disk with its parents.
ONLINE - Online an object that is currently marked as offline.
OFFLINE - Offline an object that is currently marked as online.
RECOVER - Refreshes the state of all disks in the selected pack.
Attempts recovery on disks in the invalid pack, and
resynchronizes mirrored volumes and RAID5 volumes
that have stale plex or parity data.
REM - Does nothing. This is used to comment scripts.
REMOVE - Remove a drive letter or mount point assignment.
REPAIR - Repair a RAID-5 volume with a failed member.
RESCAN - Rescan the computer looking for disks and volumes.
RETAIN - Place a retained partition under a simple volume.
SAN - Display or set the SAN policy for the currently booted OS.
SELECT - Shift the focus to an object.
SETID - Change the partition type.
SHRINK - Reduce the size of the selected volume.
UNIQUEID - Displays or sets the GUID partition table (GPT) identifier or
master boot record (MBR) signature of a disk. "

Ii got the same thing, but then did this. Press the "window' key + R. When the new box opens, type in diskmgmt.msc and tap OK. The disk management box will open and you will see what your hard drive, possibly Disk 1 as it did for me. From there, to be honest I can't quite remember because mine is now repaired and showing as healthy and is working. But what I do remember is that is was quite straight forward and simple. I either clicked on Disk 1, or possibly right clicked on it and went from there. Nothing else was required and it immediately showed as healthy and was recognized by my PC. Hope this helps!

EasyTechs The problem that I’m having is after I put in this part I typed in select disk 1. Then I typed in list part and received the message of there are no partitions on this disk to show. I can actually see the hard drive and when I right click on properties, go to hardware, and select Ed my passport 25e2 usb the device status shows as this device is working properly.Once I click the property tab under that and click on the volumes tab it’s blank. Any advice? I can hear my computer recognize the hard drive but one I click on it it states h:\ application not found

"There are No Partitions on This Disk to Show"
After ''DISKPART list part' three partitions came up. '1 system; 2 unknown ;3 primary' . I chose one and I get' virtual disk service error the object is not found'. Any help would be appreciated.
at 2:58 when I right click there are only three options:
-new simple volume
-properties
-help
the rest are grayed out, and they are:
-new spanned volum
-new striped volume
and they are underneath the "new simple volume"
Any fixes?
Edit:
there is a black bar instead of a blue one and it says "unallocated" underneath the spot where it says the total storage.

Hi, Right now I have a problem, accidentally I place a file on my HD and it's completely full. Because it's full I can not access the external HD on my PC but if I use minitool partition wizard, I can see the external drive and it's content but I don't know how to delete a file to have space and repair the external HD.
I don't know how to back up that external hard drive because windows is recognizing the drive ad "Local Drive" and I can not access the content. How can I delete a file or how can I back up the drive?

Very nice video, but I have a problem, I bought a notebook HDD a sometime ago to use in my desktop (I use one already), in the store the guy show me the HDD working just fine in a desktop, when I got home the disk was not even spinning, the HDD do not vibrate like if there was no power, I went back and ask for another HDD, he even gave me one with more storage cuz the one I bought was sold out, he show me once again the HDD working, when I got home it does not, I change my computer and it still does not working, windows make no sound when I plug it, when I turn on the computer it does not show the HDD on setup and this HDD worked on my friends computer, any thoughs?
Hello, unfortunately my WD MyBook 1Tb stopped working with my Windows 10. It used to work like 6 months ago with plug and play (for last 3 years). I tried your 3 methods but I could not get them to work. Either the Disk Management cannot assign drive or the Diskpart command does not show the Volume (although I can see 2 partitions). Any other ideas how I can re-connect my WD ext drive to my Windows 10? I tried connecting to another PC and same problem. Is the Ext HDD corrupted? Is there a WD utilities app for troubleshooting. Many thanks in advance.
