When I tried to create a new drive volume I am asked to format the drive but if I do so it will erase all the date in my external drive.Is there any solution to create a new drive volume without formatting the harddisk?
My external hard drive works well when I use it in USB 2 but don't work in USB 3. My computer has only USB 3. I bought a USB hub with both USB 2 & 3 and use the external hard drive in USB 2 of that hub. It works fine.

I have a Mac Mini 2014 and installed the latest Monterey OS....I used a wired key board as recommended......I installed bootcamp and then used my Logitech wired keyboard to use both systems....unbeknown to me my logitech wireless mouse and keyboard prevented me from seeing external drives on Monterey OS.....when I removed the wireless keyboard and attached a generic wired keyboard I could see all the external drives attached to Mac OS.....this drove me nuts

You mean the light was not on when plugging it in? Then probably the drive is damaged. But first you can try the methods in the video to help detect the drive.
You're brilliant however my problem is my Transcend storejet 1tb has data in it and I see it (thanks to you), in Disk Managent. Could you kindly help with a a way I can resolve the issue without formatting it. I cant afford to lose the Data. Thanks in advance.

Hi, first give permission to your external hard drive. 1) Go to This PC and right-click the inaccessible external hard drive, select Properties and go to the Security tab. 2) Click on Edit and choose your username from the Group or username section. 3) Click Add and OK to finish. Curious. What if my USB ports (3.0 in particular) still works for other devices? In my case, the USB jack for my external HDD is only detected when I plug it into my USB 2.0 port with the notification "There's a problem with the drive. Scan to fix it." Yet the scan isn't able to fix anything. The only time I can see it in Disk Management or Device Manager now is when it's connected to the 2.0 port and there's no exclamation point or any detected issues. I was able to get it to detect in my 3.0 port for ONE day if I uninstalled it in Device Manager (while it was in the 2.0 port), ejected it, then plugged it in to the 3.0 port.

I have an external WD 14TB Elements drive and plenty of experience installing new drives. I kept getting errors of "fatal" device error. Couldn't initialize or format. I would shut off and turn back on... nothing. Then I unplugged the drive from the AC input and plugged it back in, and my PC finally recognized it. As for why it didn't the first time, I have absolutley no idea; but I spent 45 minutes thinking it was probably DOA until 45 seconds ago. This is after trying all my computers USB ports, etc.

im not sure if im doing anything wrong but i would appreciate any help if it can be offered. i found some old HDD's that were in some old computers my family had. my dads was still running windows XP because like a stubborn ox he refused to update his hardware. my mothers was eventually upped to windows seven and i think in the last months before she stopped using it updated to windows 8 but never 10. so anyways i have both HDD's which are the 3.5 disk drives that require 12v to function. the newer one (its about 10 years old) is a sata connection and does power on and stay on, but its not showing up in the disk management, and on the device management its also not showing up either. so if i may ask, is there anything im doing wrong? on the second one its slightly older and has the old master/slave/system board cable that computers no longer use. i have an adapter to fit that, but it also doesnt seem to power on though it could be because the adapter doesnt allow for power to flow into the HDD. i wish i knew more but i honestly dont. all im wanting is to get the files off and save them because my family doesnt appreciate the necessity of keeping memories and saving them for later and im the only one trying to fix this. for the newer HDD i can plug it into my computer i believe because i do have space available for it in my desktop, imm just worried my computer is going to try and stop functioning because of it. again any help is greatly appreciated.
didnt want to do an edit, so here is update 1 of hopefully only 1. i switched USB Ports to the ones behind my desktop thinking maybe they would be better, and i was right. my computer now recognizes the newer HDD but its having a very hard time with it. not sure what all is going on but now i need to try the second more older one but im pretty sure its not going to work seeing as how theres still the issue with no power but hey one step at a time right?
Boy, things sure work quicker and with MANY fewer clicks than a person actually doing the tasks needs to do. I tried giving a USB thumb drive a permanent drive letter and, while successful, wanted to remove the permanent drive letter so the computer would again assign the drive letter if the drive was plugged into a USB port. I was able to "remove" the drive but, it didn't just remove the permanent drive letter. The computer no longer recognizes that the drive is connected (even though I do get a USB is connected tones when I plug the drive in. It just doesn't show up anywhere. Question: Is there a way to restore the permanent drive letter again or (what I was wanting to do by what I hoped would remove just the permanent drive letter which ended up apparently removing the drive which I can no longer find). Is there a way to get back to either a permanent drive letter or (better) with no permanent drive letter without having to reformat the drive? Added after doing more mucking around: I was able to get back to assigning the drive a permanent drive letter again (after positively identifying the drive via the cmd prompt) but, would still like to know how to remove a permanent drive letter and go back to letting the computer assign it on the fly. I don't do administrative functions all that often so have to fight through them every time.
I just got mine recently and it was working fine and I took a nap while it was plugged in and I woke up and my laptop went into rest mode so I turned it back on and it was gone. Now it’s saying like there is a hardware error when I try to initialize it. Smh

What if the driver shows up on the computer but cant acess it? Then says it needs to be formatted.. Also when using a file recover app all the files are there
What all lessons on this topic have all so far failed to do is that they do not demonstrate the difference on the Disc management page between when the hard drive is, and isnt plugged in, and as it would need to differ to be of relevance, these lessons leave me completely underwhelmed.....like if the disc management page stays the same regardless of if the hard drive is plugged in or not, then how can anything else you teach be of the slightest relevance ?
Okay, definitely I can't solve this by formatting. Not only because I'll lost data from a decade, but also Disk Management won't show the disk. Like, my PC recognizes the disk for seconds, and then it ignores it. I'm not sure what's going on.
Hi, I bought a wd external for my Mac, it was working fine and then after like an hour it stoped working. When I plug it in the light flashes but nothing shows up on my Mac not even on my disk utility. I tried plug-in it into different laptops but the same thing keeps happening. What can I do to fix this?
None of these youtube videos fix an external hard drive that doesn't show up as a letter or up in disk management under unknown. Yet wmic command shows drive is OK and properties say it's working properly.....
ok, I am at a loss here if there is no driver inside my external case but it shows up as genetic what do i do, throw it out the window or by a driver/?

great help but still a problem , the disk management is ok and exdrive is initialed . but when i want to transfer files to the exterior hardrive from my pc " there then seems to be no removable disk or hardrive listed on my " send to " when i highlight the file and right click and then i go send to ..nothing , your the man for advice , perhaps the xdrive is too large at 5tb ..thanks .........................oh it still doesnt open when i attach the drive cable
This video is spot on. At first I even thought I still couldn't figure it out, but I'll BE! Watching this video made it possible. Very well done. My Element WD was showing up as disc 1. I had reformatted it to hold PS4 data, but needed to use it for Windows. Another video said Disk 0 and Disk 1 were usually your PC's C drive and other important stuff so I just had it in my head that I couldn't touch those. Turns out Disk 1 was it and all I had to do was delete the volume on it. Which I am guessing was all the PS4 stuff.

I have windows 11 64bit, have tried already running prognosis with windows, different cables and USB ports, have tried installing the newest drivers, device manager shows as connected to USB 3.0, but it still not showing to open on the explorer. Whether it has moving parts or not they have a life span only you don't know what it is or when it will happen. Unless you're willing to put it in the cloud then be prepared for loss...sigh.

Thanks for your message. In Device Manager, did you see any devices with a yellow exclamation point next to them? If so, that device has a driver problem, you can right-click on it and select to update it or uninstall.
@@anyrecover5388 unfortunately there is no exclamation marked icon. I actually checked the events and I found out that the device is not migrated due to partial or ambiguous match. I checked all my ports and they are working perfectly fine using different devices such as my phone, usb stick, speakers.
@@justmenotyou6882 No light on your ext HDD means the power adapter is not connected to power, maybe you can change a cable. If all these methods don't work, then maybe you can have technical to check it.

Im hoping someone can help me. I have a external drive that works on my linux pc aswell as other devices such as straight into my tv. It will not come up on my windows 11 machine. Ive tried everything in this video and nothing. the system bleeps to recognise the harddrive being plugged in but no way of actually viewing it, it also has a light on the drive indicating its getting power. Yes the usb ports work. Have tested with other drives. The harddrives formatted to NTFS which i done on the linux machine.

Same issue, checked disk manager, device manager, chaned usb port😪 My hope is that since I upgraded to windows 10 that maybe this is the cause and I might be able to recover my files. I did check on several quotes to get data recovered from hard drive but they start at around 700 and go all the way to 3000 plus. Many of us cannot afford to spend this much😪

I have external disk. 3.5 form factor (from old computer) and I connect via USB 3.0 connector w/ power supply, it never shows up first time, only after re-boot! and meantime other eternal disk (old) USB 2.0 or any USB sticks work like a charm! so it is NO USB ports or anything, i guess it is problem w/ win 10 and w/ generic USB driver, or USB names assigning. after rebooting win10 cleans up something and start working ...

Did you try to assign a new drive letter or troubleshoot driver issues? In this way your data will stay safe.

I was able to get back to assigning the drive a permanent drive letter again (after positively identifying the drive via the cmd prompt) but, would still like to know how to remove a permanent drive letter and go back to letting the computer assign it on the fly.
I don't do administrative functions all that often so have to fight through them every time.
how to install back the USB Composite Device? I uninstalled it like in the instruction but nothing happen and now I don't know how to reinstall it. :(

I just got mine recently and it was working fine and I took a nap while it was plugged in and I woke up and my laptop went into rest mode so I turned it back on and it was gone. Now it’s saying like there is a hardware error when I try to initialize it. Smh

What if the driver shows up on the computer but cant acess it? Then says it needs to be formatted.. Also when using a file recover app all the files are there

What all lessons on this topic have all so far failed to do is that they do not demonstrate the difference on the Disc management page between when the hard drive is, and isnt plugged in, and as it would need to differ to be of relevance, these lessons leave me completely underwhelmed.....like if the disc management page stays the same regardless of if the hard drive is plugged in or not, then how can anything else you teach be of the slightest relevance ?
Okay, definitely I can't solve this by formatting. Not only because I'll lost data from a decade, but also Disk Management won't show the disk. Like, my PC recognizes the disk for seconds, and then it ignores it. I'm not sure what's going on.

Hi, I bought a wd external for my Mac, it was working fine and then after like an hour it stoped working. When I plug it in the light flashes but nothing shows up on my Mac not even on my disk utility. I tried plug-in it into different laptops but the same thing keeps happening. great help but still a problem , the disk management is ok and exdrive is initialed . but when i want to transfer files to the exterior hardrive from my pc " there then seems to be no removable disk or hardrive listed on my " send to " when i highlight the file and right click and then i go send to ..nothing , your the man for advice , perhaps the xdrive is too large at 5tb ..thanks .........................oh it still doesnt open when i attach the drive cable

This video is spot on. At first I even thought I still couldn't figure it out, but I'll BE! Watching this video made it possible. Very well done. My Element WD was showing up as disc 1. I had reformatted it to hold PS4 data, but needed to use it for Windows. Another video said Disk 0 and Disk 1 were usually your PC's C drive and other important stuff so I just had it in my head that I couldn't touch those. Turns out Disk 1 was it and all I had to do was delete the volume on it. Which I am guessing was all the PS4 stuff.

Good evening, hope you are doing well. first of all, thank you for your video. My drive shows in disk management but the only 2 options are: Help or delete Volume. I have windows 11 64bit, have tried already running prognosis with windows, different cables and USB ports, have tried installing the newest drivers, device manager shows as connected to USB 3.0, but it still not showing to open on the explorer. I have watched so many videos and looked through so many pages but no idea what to do. Thanks for any kind of help!

@@REALTEXAN_Hispanic The more I look into "permanent" solutions I'm finding there seems to be little to none for the home consumer. Whether it has moving parts or not they have a life span only you don't know what it is or when it will happen. Unless you're willing to put it in the cloud then be prepared for loss...sigh.

The light on my ext HDD is not on and does not show up in my file explorer. However, I can see it on my devices and printers, and device manager but not in disk management. Thanks for your message. In Device Manager, did you see any devices with a yellow exclamation point next to them? If so, that device has a driver problem, you can right-click on it and select to update it or uninstall.
@@anyrecover5388 unfortunately there is no exclamation marked icon. I actually checked the events and I found out that the device is not migrated due to partial or ambiguous match. I checked all my ports and they are working perfectly fine using different devices such as my phone, usb stick, speakers.
@@justmenotyou6882 No light on your ext HDD means the power adapter is not connected to power, maybe you can change a cable. If all these methods don't work, then maybe you can have technical to check it.

Im hoping someone can help me. I have a external drive that works on my linux pc aswell as other devices such as straight into my tv. It will not come up on my windows 11 machine. Ive tried everything in this video and nothing. the system bleeps to recognise the harddrive being plugged in but no way of actually viewing it, it also has a light on the drive indicating its getting power. Yes the usb ports work. Have tested with other drives. The harddrives formatted to NTFS which i done on the linux machine.

Same issue, checked disk manager, device manager, chaned usb port😪 My hope is that since I upgraded to windows 10 that maybe this is the cause and I might be able to recover my files. I did check on several quotes to get data recovered from hard drive but they start at around 700 and go all the way to 3000 plus. Many of us cannot afford to spend this much😪

I have external disk. 3.5 form factor (from old computer) and I connect via USB 3.0 connector w/ power supply, it never shows up first time, only after re-boot!
and meantime other eternal disk (old) USB 2.0 or any USB sticks work like a charm! so it is NO USB ports or anything,
i guess it is problem w/ win 10 and w/ generic USB driver, or USB names assigning.
after rebooting win10 cleans up something and start working ...
Fixed it by just trying a different cable. Happened with my blue yeti as well.

i had to delete the bigger part of my xsternal hardrive to use it but then did the steps for number three basicly unallocating my main exsternal storage
