Love this presentation of your lock gifts. It is more engaging than just the usual show and tell. Great job! Oh, I'd take the first lock shown should I be fortunate enough.

Honestly, I thought ABUS was just the name. Had no clue it was an Acronym. Very interesting! I love the history of locks. For the last lock..... I have no info on that one, but it’s cool! I’d leave it rusted (adds to the charm), but I’d assure that it can open and close.
Please, keep doing videos like these! The way you present videos makes me few more educated about the lock and lock sporting itself. You have fantastic teaching qualities.
If I had a chance to win one of them, I’d like the Yale I think. Old locks are the best !!!
Thank you, friend, for another great video.
Oh, as for the questions.... I got 7/10. Better than I thought

@@fishpicks4531 First, see if you can open CCW. I always wondered why some locks (mainly ML magnums and ML 15, etc ) are easier to rake open CCW. That would be right down your alley. First, see if it is true, and if so, why. I know it is true for me. And I have pioneered ways to get it turned the right way because spinners don't always work. Great idea to spice up an unboxing video. Personally, unless the parcel showed up on my doorstep, I find unboxing videos a bit boring. However, I love what you have done here, it helps to engage me with the process. Leave the rust. I have a few of those old locks and the one that I put in a tumbler is by far now the one I like the least. Cleaning only highlights the damage in my opinion. The old iron Yale push key padlocks take a cleaning real well to remove rust, but being an iron body, the pitting from rust is not noticeable. The same cannot be said for old steel locks. Anyway, always a great video as usual. You should be reading books for Audíble! Or maybe the new voice of Alexa😂. Cheers Mate🇺🇸🇬🇧.

This is an excellent tweak on an unboxing vid. Much more interesting than the usual.
As to the patina issue, my vote is to compromise. Remove any and all dirt and major rust and restore good working condition without removing the age related aspect of the patina. Aim for a "clean old used lock" rather than either "showroom new" or "dirty old thing found in a dustbin".

It definitely makes it more worthwhile to watch than, say, other creators' unboxing where I just feel envy that they have cool retro tech (not going to name names like LGR or RetroRecipes ;) ).
If I were to qualify for a giveaway, I would most certainly be interested in the ABUS-cored Brady (or Brady branded ABUS?). I love my ML 410, but I'd like to be able to remove the core and progressive-pin a similar lock and that seems to do the trick.

Fish. As to the older patina aged lever lock. My guess is a Sargent brand. Not entirely sure. Any faded marks on the backside. But it appears to be a split lever lock. Any number of levers - a set on the bottom and an equal set on the top. The center hole is free turning and acts as center guide for the key. As to aged looking versus cleaned up. I like a bit of both. It is your lock. Display it and show it how you wish. Take care Fish.

Fun quiz Fish. I actually missed a couple. Nice idea. Regarding the mystery lock - how good is the fit and finish? From your photos it looks pretty crude which would suggest that it's an Indian knock-off of a European design. I've never seen a keyway like that but, again, that suggests it's not a familiar maker. As for refinishing it? You can split the difference by halting the rusting process with a chemical treatment then NOT polishing.

For the last lock I'd use a nylon brush and PTFE spray to remove some of the rust, which wouldn't be so aggressive as a rust-remover or naval jelly (to prevent degrading the patina and increase both useability and a chance to pick without risking the value).

@@fishpicks4531 The most common type in the US is Tri-Flow, usually meant for bike parts. It's Teflon in spray form. WD-40 and graphite (Lock-Ease is the common brand here) will actually grab dirt and cause more problems in the long run. I've done a lot of lock service and any good locksmith will only sell you PTFE. Using a brass or steel brush, even one of those buffing wheels, will probably strip the patina. DuPont has some good PTFE spray but the best is supposed to be the Houdini brand, though it's pricey. Being in Europe with the wonderful bike culture I'm sure you can find something. I've found Tri-Flow even in Germany. I hope it helps! People yell at bosnianbill for using WD-40 all the time. He's a great resource for lock restoration though. His e-mail address is kinda tricky to find but I could share with you if you're interested.

The last lock is a six lever. Three levers on either side of the key way. The key is a split key that moves three levers on the right and three on the left at the same time to release the shackle. I can email you a photo of the key if you like.
Here is a link from Doug’s Picks showing how to open it with a wire. 🦊👍

The quiz was too hard. Lol. I would leave the patina on the last one. If I had to choose a lock to win, it'd be the little cute American lock. :) I like the video, they were not Australian locks so I don't know much about them though. :/

    • @fishpicks4531

For what it's worth, I wouldn't have done terribly well in the quiz either! Of course, I'd be very happy to receive some Australian locks to ensure my Antipodean subscribers have their chance to shine too!!

Nice format fish like it very informative (i only got 7 spot on and 1 sort of) Thanks MrFish! As to old locks i just stabilise any oxides with a quick soak in white distilled vinegar and then a bit of light oil just to ensure its functional parts stay functional.

I didn't do so bad in quiz, if I had the old rusty lock I would only partly restore it. Like any lock as I'm still a noob 👍👍👍♿
