Just found you ! Invaluable content for newbie such as me. I have some general questions.. for you and maybe your subscribers. I'm thinking specifically about Euro Locks. 1) Are all pin diameters essentially the same, regardless of manufacturer ? and maybe 1b) Are these pins compatible with the traditional Rim Locks too ? 2) I get that better, more secure locks generally have better, tighter tolerances, but the character (profile, material, randomness) of the pins can provide better security from bumping and raking. Given that these pin characteristics are cheap to implement, how come all manufacturers don't use these improvements ? 3) Spring size/material gives differing inertia response to raking bumping (or even using twin springs or springs with steel balls). Again, cheap to implement but maybe not implemented very often in cheap and mid range locks ? 4) Does 'fettling' pins and springs tend to make locks less reliable ?
Hi Karen - thanks so much for reaching out. So here is my best effort to answer as a newcomer myself - I’m sure more experienced pickers will chip in: 1) pin diameters can vary - most euro cylinder pins seem to be about 2.9mm is diameter and most repinning kits reflect this. There are brands, such as Masterlock/American which use slimmer pins though. 2) I believe that the additional manufacturing precision makes many of the cheaper security solutions too expensive to employ. The randomness of poor tolerance locks can go either way - I have a Masterlock No3 that I still haven’t picked but can easily rake open. I have others that fall open when you just look at them the wrong way! Most quality lock firms want to remove that kind of variance and have a reliable level of security and so the tighter tolerances allow for this, and it in turn is reflected in the price point. 3) I think sometimes lock manufacturers lack imagination or motivation to add security pins and other innovations - they are the fast food equivalent of the security world. They offer cheap, mass produced fare that isn’t fancy but delivers a basic level of satiety! 4) Afraid this one is beyond my current knowledge - if you’re not already a member of some of the Facebook Groups I’d strongly encourage you to join - you’ll find they are active and full of really experienced and helpful folk who will no doubt be able to provide an answer to this and other queries 😉

What do you mean Kramer? I haven’t put any geographical restrictions on the prize? If you sign up to the giveaway, I’ll send the prize anywhere in the world mate. If you can give me details, I’ll look into it. I use a giveaway platform called KingSumo so it could be a setting issue in the app but I’m not aware of any limitations it imposes. Where are you based?
