    Ok this is how I passed my psychology class over the summer:
    I took typing classes in 6th grade and worked my way up to over 100 wpm (just to spite the mean old teacher) and I typed out literally everything my professor said ever. I was super into her lectures too, so I hyper-focused on everything she said. After class I never studied or reviewed notes or anything like that. I just... showed up for the tests and did 'em, and got a 92% overall grade!
    Just... don't ask me about my other classes.

      I used to doodle and draw pics of what the teacher was saying. It was crazy helpful. Also, if you can get away with snacking during class it helps too :)

    • @cutiepiezapzap4369
      @cutiepiezapzap4369 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I struggle with that too. It's probably the biggest challenge not daydreaming. Something that helps ease this a little is sitting front and center in the classroom away from the windows and think of yourself as having a good conversation with the teacher like you would a friend. You can make remarks about what they say in class in your head as if it were a two way conversation. (ex. okay i see what you're saying, that makes sense, how could that be, what else do you have to say about it, so basically what you mean is... etc) It also somehow makes me active instead of passive & I participate more too because when I'm thinking "I don't get it" during our "conversation" i know to raise my hand and ask a question. Never be afraid to ask questions, nobody was born knowing everything and different people need different explanations. Sounds a bit crazy but it works sometimes! And instead of thinking i'm never going to use this (because lets face it we have to pass this class either way) challenge yourself to find ways that it can apply to your life.

      I actually had this problem a lot in classes too. So I bought a recorder and brought it to every class. I would record the entire lecture and try my best to pay attention. But if I ever drifted off and then randomly came back to reality, I would look at the time and make a time stamp in my notes so I knew what I needed to go back and listen to/take notes on later in the recording. This is 4 years later that I’m commenting but I just found this channel and just learned that I may have ADHD.

    • @janai5074

      @@SupineReverie Brilliant! I wish I could've recorded in school! They should offer to record lectures and email to students with ADHD afterwards. It's not like I didn't want to learn but they sure treated me that way, with zero help. What can I say, it was the 90s...

    • @SupineReverie
      @SupineReverie 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@janai5074 Oh goodness, I'm sorry you had to cope with that. :( Yeah, they really should offer that as another method of learning, I agree. I would just take my little voice recorder and do it without asking (which maybe I should have, but I was afraid they would think something weird about me - and I had no idea about the ADHD back then). They were big enough classrooms in college and so no one seemed to care.

    GREAT TIPS! I struggled with copying notes from the board and listening to the teacher all at once! I could be writing down the notes while holding 3-4 words in my mind and completely forget that the teacher is talking about important stuff. it's like dozing off.

    I typically record the lectures as I'm listening to them in case I zone out during parts of them (which I often do) while writing small bullet points with summarized information of what's being said (or at least the parts I was focusing on during the lecture) if I missed anything I'd go back to the recording and try to fill it in later. Usually I'd as for my friends notes as a guide if I missed anything important.

    • @Evarya
      @Evarya 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      yes!!! i started doing this too and it saved me. when i realized i had zoned out, in my notebook i would write down what time the recording has listed so it would be easier for me to go back in and fill in the spots i missed.

    Literally on the verge of tears because this was me. In high school I just listened to the teacher and never took notes. The information was easy enough for me to retain, at least until the next test. The problem came with college. There was SO MUCH INFORMATION. I just couldn't keep up, I never learned to take notes, we had cumulative tests, I didn't know I had ADHD, I couldn't process ANYTHING, and I ended up suffering from depression. I so wish I had known what was going on in my brain so I could have gotten help :'(

    Just stumbled across your channel today, so glad I did. I was diagnosed with ADD since i was seven (maybe earlier? I'm not sure actually) but no one really new how to deal with it. My parents just assumed i needed more time to do homework and study, but would get frustrated when i had done virtually nothing in the space of two hours. (Don't get me wrong, my parents are pretty great in most regards, they just didn't know how to deal with it and neither did I) By some miracle I finished high-school with reasonably average marks and am now in my first semester at uni. Was really starting to struggle with keeping up with all my subjects, I've heard of some of the study/focusing techniques you talk about but you explain it in such a way that really helps me out. Thank-you so much :) Sending you hugs from Australia. :D

    Cornell note taking saved me in high school, as long as I remembered to go back to them. It's one step farther than the note style you explain, going through and taking your own notes from the book and then highlighting and adding notes in a second column. Finally, we would follow up with a brief summary at the bottom of the page. It's helped me focus on what the teacher was saying rather than panicking that I would miss something important.

    I've been seeking treatment for my inattentive ADHD for the past month or so now, but 2:58 in this video is when I knew for sure how badly it was impacting my studies. That process is one I go through for every class, every lecture, every time. Deliberate practice. Find a pre test or use homework to figure out what you already know and don't know and able to guess. Then read or watch a video on what you missed. For example do you really need to read entire page to know biology is the study of life probably not.

  • @iKhanKing

    Here's what I do.
    1. Pencil and Paper only. If I can access TH-cam, reddit, and Facebook on it, I won't be taking notes.
    2. Short hand. I listen to the professor, understand it, and try to copy it down fast before it fades from my working memory. Having a printout of the powerpoint, or an outline helps with this, because it allows you to focus on what the teacher is SAYING when you take notes, and filling in the stuff written down later.
    3. I actually avoid looking at the material before hand at all costs. Why? Well one of the reasons I've been able to do fairly well with lectures is that I find them absolutely fascinating. If am excited to learn something new, reading ahead is like reading a plot summary to the next Star Wars movie, it ruins the fun. If I can't get interested, I'll check out and won't pay attention.
    Sincerely, Brain in professional school who should be studying.

    I use the Livescribe smartpen for note taking: it records the audio and pairs it to your written notes, which syncs with the app. Whenever the lecture gets too fast, or I miss something I do not stress out. I just leave some room in my notes to fix it later and I move on with the teacher. The pen is little pricy and needs a special paper to work, but for me it worth the investment.

    I have found Smart Pens to be super helpful! It records the lecture while you take notes on special paper and, once you stop the recording, you just touch the pen tip to any price of writing on the page and it jumps right to that part of the recording! I would draw a small box in the margin any time I realized I had spaced out during the lecture and then touch that box and back up a bit to get what I missed (leaving a few lines in the notes to fill in later) it also helped my focus on more of the lecture because I could speed up the recording so that my monotone professor wouldn't get in the way of the information! It can be expensive but college university disability offices sometimes rent them out for free! It helped me so much!!! And so does this channel!!

    i´ve just headed back to school in the age of 30, and after consulting my doctor about blood samples to check Testosterone and all that after seeing that i have difficulty remembering stuff i came across your videos, also took the test and got my girlfriend to watch a "symptoms on ADHD" i think this actually might be the reason why i can sit and program code for hours, instant feedback when the code works, and focusing on that like when i was younger with video games , while unable to do other things for more than 5 minutes.
    not sure if you stopped this channel, but thanks a lot for the videos you have posted already.
    time to consult my doctor with some tests i guess, (ps scored 87%) on one of your other tests you linked, and my girlfriend laughed when it was said something about overthinking things that can happen.. i mean i bring a hatchet, lights and matches, extra clothes going on a short 2 hour trip in the woods (with trails....)
    Anyways thanks for the videos, helped me a lot.

Thank you for creating this channel though! I cried watching your Ted talk and then found your TH-cam page.

    I always suspected my note taking failure had something to do with adhd so thanks for filling in the why :) my solution has been a live scribe pen that records while you write. Makes note taking much less stressful and I just add a little symbol if I've zoned out for a bit and know I need to listen to that part again.

    I just finished my Master of Social Work last year, and I had always struggled with taking notes. Every time I tried to take notes I would completely forget what was being taught. I would always ask for someone else's notes and offer to study with them. I found if I could engage with the material in a verbal way, I would have a better ability to remember it. But I had to be careful that I didn't monopolize the class time either, so it was a struggle. I had no idea my issues were related to ADHD, but it explains so much.

    GREAT NOTE TAKING ADVICE:
    Before class get out your phone and record audio of the entire lecture. Then take the notes down as fast as you can, you dont have to understand. Just write! After school you can go over the notes you took while listening to the recording! Boom! Notes!

    Something I did for taking notes was to record the classes. I listened and payed as attention as I could to the class and recorded it at the same time (this required that I pay attention cause there were parts that might escape the recording). When I got home, I transcribed the recording to my notebook, and were able to revise what I learned and understand things I didn't catch at the moment. The issue was when I let the recordings accumulate, and then I was not so interested in having to transcribe a whole semester worth of notes in a week, or if a class was too boring/not interesting enough for me, cause I couldn't be bothered to study it. This however helped me out through my undergrad and masters and I still remember what was said during the classes I did this for, so maybe it could be helpful for someone out there.

    TL:DR Visual Notetaking/Sketchnoting is fantastic for ADHD brains that are Visual and/or Kinetic learners. Check it out.
    I didn't realise that notes actually help me learn until I discovered visual notetaking, - this was six months ago, could have used this technique 10+ years ago for high school... *sigh*). My brain really responds to having information encoded in a visual way. And when I go to review it, I actually remember stuff. I'm so happy I've finally found something that works.
    Visual/Kinetic Learners take note! I am both of these things and find that having something to look at whilst listening to lectures, is great for the visual part of my brain, whilst the movement of drawing and writing helps the kinetic part. I've always found it easier to remember things when walking around, turns out having a purposeful thing to do with my hands is just as helpful.

    Listening to this reminded me of an app I found. It's called Recorder. You set your phone on tour desk, hit the record button in the app, and it will not only record but transcribe everything they say with pretty good accuracy. I've been using it for my classes this semester and it's been doing wonders for me. If I get distracted in lecture, I can now just go back through everything that was transcribed. I can also listen to it and follow along with the slides if I need to later on.

    I'm literally using this at uni now, for my BSc in Psychology. the plan is to have a table divided up into 2 columns; left is narrower and is for the heading of the topic, the main name person in a study with the year and the right column is next to it is the theory and what's going on.
    Example: Left column: Drunk Behaviour Right coloumn:
    Moore et al, 2090: Alcohol Inhibition: blah blah blah
    This helps me to keep everything neat and concise while also able to flesh out my lecture notes with other bits.

    When I was in college I would record the lecture on tape (it was awhile ago) and spend the time during class listening and absorbing what information I could. Then that night I would listen to the tape and take notes when I could pause and rewind in case I missed something. Or even skip over dead sections where I knew there was no useful information. Today you could easily do that on your phone. You could even take pics of any visual aids you think might be helpful later. Though it's usually polite to ask first.

    Something educators can do that is exceptionally helpful? Put an outline of the material up before the lecture. This highlights the main/important points, provides structure, and gives context for material than can be expanded during the class or lecture portion. This was really helpful in college, but would apply at any level, I think.

    If your school or university records lectures or lessons it is useful to note down the time you zoned out and lost track of what's happening. If it's not an option, ask your teachers if you could record the classes on a dictaphone to review later. It makes such a difference. There is also some pretty advanced software to help you do that but it's pretty expensive, so it's worth seeing if you're eligible for any kind of disabled/learning difficulty grants

    I totally doodled and made a point of drawing out my notes. It was a very helpful system. I was very determined to overcome my ADHD symptoms.....I didn't take meds and it was pretty tough. I took twice as long to do homework, but I was still a kid people went to to get there questions answered about things in class (not history though). It's hard being a smart girl with ADHD because you have to work extra hard. I can only imagine how much better I would have done if I had meds and these videos to go to!!! (I didn't even know I officially had ADHD till after college)

    Most of my courses are some variation of "Death By Powerpoint". A pretty common accommodation is requesting a copy of the ppt. If a professor is not willing to share, discretely snap pictures of the slides with your phone, paste them into a word doc after class, and make your notes under each picture. This also works for stuff on the blackboard/whiteboard. This process works well, at least for me. Just remember to turn your sound off and be discrete so you do not call attention to yourself.

    I record lectures and take notes 📝. I listen to the recording several times. I also google related topics to find another way to process the same information.
