I've found that studying with a partner helps. I found a friend who also has ADHD and studies the same stuff so we'd spend 15 minutes studying then see who can remember the most without looking at the info. Loser has to buy the snacks for the next study session. it's a small prize but it's the competition that really helps me

I tried it and I absolutely hate it, I mean nice that it works for you but when I realize they want to talk to me or aren't able to solve a problem or get frustrated, it breaks my concentration, so I try to solve it for them and don't get any studying done myself. The less people the better so when I enter that super concentration we get when solving difficult problems I can work 8 hours on the same thing without disturbance

Of course this won’t be useful for every brain, but by doing that you effectively make it much easier to actually get to studying, since you have both someone who you’re held accountable to *and* the added motivation of reward!

    01:45 study the same information
    02:02 make it unique
    02:14 sleep
    02:28 practice retrieving it
    02:45 give it time
    03:31 make it routine
    03:43 make it fun
    03:50 space it out
    04:00 mix it up
    04:09 do something physical
    04:17 play some music
04:28 find what works for you

    Something really cool:
A person only retains about 2/10 of what they hear, 3/10 of what they see, and 6/10 of what they see & hear.
BUT, a person retains 9/10 of what they teach.
So, next time you "brains" need to study for something, try teaching it to someone. If nobody wants to listen, talk to yourself. You'll look like a crazy person but, believe me, it gets the job done!

Since I was little I've had trouble staying focused and acting compulsively, and I've had many problems because of it. However, I never knew it was AHDH. My mother's a doctor and she always mentioned i had attention deficiency but I never knew it was serious. I started investigating and that's how I found your videos. Every single question I've asked myself since I was little has been answered. Everything I thought was weird and made me think that I wasn't like anyone else, was all because of my AHDH. I've tried opening up to friends and relatives about it but they always say I should try harder, that everyone has it and that it isn't real, but now, thanks to you, I know I'm not alone and that there are still people who understand me. Thank you.

I might get distracted by other people but as long they're not being annoying (they're probably not annoying people. I am just to picky). I listen to their conversations and think 'uh interesting...' so I may be able to focus on my thing while listening to other people conversations. #stalker #SorryRandonPeople

I've found that highlighting key points with different colours as different levels of importance really helps. Also, if you're doing some writing as part of it, write in capitals, it takes a bit longer and requires a tiny bit more focus, so I've found that it helps me to remember what I'm writing.

Another great video! The #1 thing I struggle with is motivation. I know what I should do and I know how to do it but for some reason I still can't force myself to do something. Good to know that other people with ADHD have this problem as well, I'll start trying the egg timer and to-do list methods >

It's like my focus slips away and I go involuntaryly into 'its time to play mode'. I have thought just having a laptop for school work might work to hard rewire my mind when it comes to productivity and play.

+How to ADHD Yeah, that's probably a good idea. Related to that, I'm a big fan of the approach that Dr. Russel Barkley advocates for ADHD and studying (or tasks in general). He suggests setting timers to help with tasks. 10 minutes of working on the task, followed by a 3 minute break, followed by 10 minutes on and so forth. Basically a shortened version of the pomodoro technique for people with less-than-adequate executive functioning. I've had good success with it... when I can remember where I put my timer.

+Joshua Greig ooh that's perfect! 25 minutes is wayyy too long for me to focus, and I usually end up giving myself the break anyways because, well, I only checked my phone a FEW times... but 10 minutes sounds doable!

I am 28 year old student about to start my my 3rd year in my nursing degree. I have had a lot of trouble with inattention, irritability and impulsivity during my time studying.
I find that talking to someone about what I have learnt as an attempt to educate them, this helps me feel confident that I have retained the information from the content I have learnt. I find that this works well when you have someone who best if I do this with a few select people as some people may not be as excited to hear me ramble on. My mother has been a person that has been useful for me to talk about, she has the patience of a saint and will listen to me for hours on end.
I have been listening to heavy metal and screamo music over the past few semeters, not my normal choice of music to listen to but I find that this type of music can get me motivated and hyperfocused by making me feel like I am in a life or death situation 🤣 I find this very effective but If I am experiencing feelings of defeat or a similar emotions I find this can be soul destroying so I try not to use this strategy unless I feel like I am in dire need of motivation. Motivating my self like this has been costly on my mental wellbeing because of the grim or depressive tone that this music can bring. In a way this strategy is a part of the "HULK SMASH" strategy used to get past the "wall of aweful". I break through the "wall of awful" mentioned in one of Jessica's videos, but usually gets me really angry with myself to the point where I beat my self up emotionally.
I find that heavy metal and screamo are the most effective music genres to help me with my study. I have tried listening to different upbeat music to try and increase my level of motivation but I have not been able to find any other genres that work as well as those two genres do.
Much love for everyone involved with the production of this youtube channel, I do not know where I would be without it.

I find explaining something out loud (in an empty room / with an audience of cuddly toys!) very helpful, cause I then hear what I’m thinking and can then critique it. I can hone it down so it becomes succinct and clear. That also helps because there is then less to remember. I also tend to walk around the room when doing this perhaps because the more of ‘me’ I get involved i.e. speech, listening, movement (kinaesthetic input), the more I remember. Finally I try to make each ‘short ‘story’ part of a larger story, by linking it to other, related short stories, so I can explain, to myself, more complex ideas. I know it sounds geeky, and it probably is, but I find it works for me. I can also them mentally review these stories in a few minutes of downtime or use them as the basis of ‘model ‘answers’ to test questions - as long as I do actually READ the question and not just recognise SOMETHING and then blather on with a ‘story’, which is actually not relevant in the context of the question I’m trying to answer. Talking of blathering - well done for getting this far - ‘bye!

Schools put an unusual emphasis on sitting down and not moving during studying - not always helpful. I like doing fifteen minutes of studying then fifteen minutes of chores. I can think about what Im learning while I do the chores and change the chores as Im studying. I get both chores done and learning! Breaking it into smaller chunks also means I can identify things I dont 'get' easier when Im pondering.
Brain: "Are You Pondering What I'm Pondering?"
Pinkie: "I think so, Brain, but if we had a snowmobile, wouldn't it melt before summer?"
Parked cares are also great as a quiet place to go and spend a couple of minutes in if your the sort to get panic feelings. when my anxiety gets to me in the store taking five minutes out to relax (I park my cart at the customer service counter - if you let them know you will be right back they will leave it there) can make the next half hour/hour of shopping less miserable. :)

So I have a few tips for having ADHD in school.
Post it notes are great for remembering... And remembering to remember.
    STRESS BALLS ARE GREAT.
Don't let your friends get a hold of them though, your teacher will think you are giving them a toy, and take it away... Or not let you have it in class.
Tell some of your teachers. If they understand, this will save your life.

On the idea of making it unique. Activate several different senses while study it's better if it's a new sensation like listen to music you never listen to or chewing an flavor of gum you've never tried. Something on that idea your brain will help you recall those memory's for instance I used to play music when I would play video games back when I was a kid when I listen to that same song I can imagine the exact same game the setup if the room everything

Something I've found that really helps me study is to read a piece of information I need to know (for example "Simple squamous epithelial tissue can be found in the lining of the heart and the air sacs of the lungs") then walk around doing dishes or something that I want to procrastinate with, while trying to recall the information. Then I go over a second piece of information and try to remember both, then a third etc. It really helped me remember things I was struggling to process properly.

What about a video on why people may think ADHD isn't a real disorder

    • @chibichocofairy
      @chibichocofairy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I am not going to try to explain, since am not really an expert on it, but it might help to know that there are a lot of other disorders that started out as things people didn't believe in, or blamed on bad parenting, that after a while became widely accepted as a real illnesses. An example of that would be autism.
One of the reasons everyday people question ADHD is because they aren't familiar with how it works.
One of the reasons why ( a small minority) of health professionals question ADHD is because they are dissatisfied with how it's diagnosed, but everyday more and more research is being published that shows evidence as to why ADHD is a neruodevelopmental disorder and scientist are working on tests to show the differences between a ADHD brain and a neurotypical brain, but that all takes time and funding.
I think most experts agree there is already enough data and evidence to say ADHD is a real disorder, and instead the modern research of ADHD is about 1.what causes and influences it, 2.how it can be best treated, 3.how it can be better diagnosed (adhd is famously over diagnosed), 4.How much does it actually affect brain function,

Yesssssss thank you for the music suggestion! Listening now at work to Explosions in the Sky. I thought when you said that, because I was listening to this at my desk and not looking, I thought you literally meant explosions in the sky. And I thought WHAT does that sound like? Air pocket music? No, no... it wasn’t that but I jumped onto my music app and immediately searched it to find out that it.. wasnt... that. But I love it so far!!! I really like GHOSTS I-IV by Nine Inch Nails too. Isn’t for everyone for sure but I use that sometimes to get inspiration for creative ideas. Love this channel so so much.

I found the technique of rewriting my notes while also concentrating the details (I usually would do 2-3 cycles of rewrites) really helped to lock the information into my memory for recall during the exams. As a bonus of this process I usually had a single page double-sided with a concentrated version of all the material that I could then look over quickly just before the exam for a last minute refresh.

Post rock and instrumental or classical music is my favorite for homework or studying! Also, even though there's some lyrics in Chillstep (basically softer melodic dubstep), it doesn't seem to distract me, especially since I rarely know the songs. And there's also instrumental Chillstep which is even more useful and just as enjoyable!

    Prepare:
After the lesson, make wordcards and keep them in a small box by chapter and subject. That takes a little preparation at the beginning of the year but it’s worth it! I use indexcards for my students.
    Actual studying:
Write a word on one side of the card and the answer on the other side. Check yourself by going through them and dividing into two piles: I know-pile and the practise more-pile.
    Tips:
-Use colourcoding on for example spelling errors you tend to make. Female/male words in pink or blue.
-Don’t practise more than five cards at a time.
-hard to remember: draw it!!! Look up short videos. Images stick better.
    Good luck!

What helped me get through school, when I took notes, I combined a bunch of different techniques into my notes. I would BOLD (or capitalize) important "topic" words, as opposed to other less significant parts. I also used circles and arrows a lot, to draw relationships between words or ideas. Depending on the subject, I used a sort of outline format. Where the main thought was BOLD and left indent, while parts that related to that topic were marked with a "-" and indent more toward center. I used a lot of bold, or underline, or circling words, even drawing pictures in my notes. The point was to understand the important topic, make it relate-able, and much easier to understand later, than writing down everything. I also used abbreviations (why is abbreviation such a long word, anyway?) to break down ideas as well. I was horrible at speaking up in class, or participating, and I would never do well on in-class projects. But, I was an ace test taker. I could fail the in-class stuff, teachers think I never paid attention, but were constantly shocked how I aced the test.

As others have mentioned, explaining the concepts to others/to yourself is very helpful - especially when done in a fun way! My favorite studying tricks are things like reenacting historical events using modern slang (or Bill Wurtz style narration), making silly doodles of stick figures illustrating physics concepts, cracking bad math puns at my friends, etc. Anything that rephrases the material in an entertaining way can be quite useful!

Thanks for another great video, you seirously dont know how much youre heping me, but sometimes I set reminders on my phone just to remember stuff, I end up skipping them because Im always thinking Ill do it later, IT ALWAYS HAPPENS! also its veryhard for me to studybecause instead of studying (something REALLY WIERD dont know if you relate) Im thaninking always about music, even If Im not even listening to it. I can be banging my head to Imaginary songs that I love, but they will never cease to stop, mix that with thought that lead to everything EVERY SINGLE TIME, procastinating, etc.
What works for me though it may sound weird is making little notes with big letters and arrows so I wont waste too much time taking notes, I try as hard as I can to pay atention (I space out a LOT! BUT I TRY) and maybe an hour before the exam with a friend I review our notes and try to explain them instead of doing quizes.
I ALSO WOULD LOVE A VIDEO WITH FACTS ABOUT YOURSELF, I THINK WE ALL AGREE ON THE FACT THAT WE WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT YOU! :D Thanks A LOT!

Study buddies were amazing for me.
I very literally could never study on my own. I'd have typed notes and audio recordings of lectures (in college). Many of my teachers and later professors provided outlines readily. I just couldn't get myself to study on my own. The moment I was with 1-3 other people working together in a study session, a magical transformation underwent for me. I could do it!
For me, it's just like doing chores. When someone else was around (even doing something else), I'd be able to focus on one task long enough to actually complete it.

How do I know if I have ADHD? Whenever I'm at school or sitting down or just need to sit there not doing anything or paying attention to something, I'm always kicking my feet or playing with my finger or tapping on my desk or playing with my pencil. I can watch some videos, but almost never the full way through. In school, I get really good grades but I lose focus so easily. I'm not very active, but I watch videos a lot (never the full way through like I said earlier). My mind is always occupied, but I'm not always moving. I don't want to self diagnose because that bothers me because many people self diagnose having anxiety which is annoying because they don't self diagnose cancer and it shouldn't be any different, but I honestly believe I have it. I'm not the person who thinks "oh I coughed so I have the flu" I like to have multiple symptoms and ask people to make sure I have this.

+MissMaddieMakeup I know what you mean, I am kind of at the same point, I don't have the same exact supposed symptoms as you but I know where you're coming from!

    • @cool82798
      @cool82798 7 ปีที่แล้ว

the best advice is to visit a doctor to get your diagnosis, but you'd want to be almost certain you do before going because the doctors can be expesive! look up symptoms and they have online quizzes to see if you have ADHD (of course these quizzes can not give you an official diagnosis but it'll give you a rough idea!)

I listen to a lot of Jack Johnson to help with my ADHD moments (moments as in when my ADHD is not conducive to the task at hand, obviously all my moments are more or less ADHD moments lmao). It's always worked in helping me relax & clear my mind. The mellow tone & soft lyrics let me ease back & then focus on the task at hand.

I started online college last year and would put earbuds in and listen to music, but I found that sometimes it distracted me when I needed to read(which I'm having issues doing right now, cool fact the mc has adhd) , so I tried different songs. Lately my symptoms have been more intense like 2 hours ago when I woke up 3 times for no reason. I really love these videos, since lately I need all the help I can get. I tried Tibetan bowl music, but after a few minutes the vibration hurt my ears. It's not bad though because the music was calming. I can't wait to try the suggestions you put in the description. Thank you. Now I'm off to work.

Get permission from the teacher/professor first, but recording the audio of the lecture or class will help. I would write down the key points, leave gaps in my notebook paper, and not worry if I missed something since I have the entire thing recorded. Later than evening I would listen to the class/lecture again (not as boring as it sounds) and fill in the gaps of things I may have missed or elaborate more on a specific topic. This is how I made it through my Exercise Physiology class my senior year of college. I would not have passed the class without it. :)

Hey, my personal advice for studying:
Have 3 folders you study at 3 regular points in time (every 2 days, every 1 week, every 2 weeks). When you have answered something regularly from one folder twice, put it in the next folder up. If you have too much in the 2 week folder you can always make a 1 month folder. It´s a technique that challenges my willpower because it´s such a pain in the ass to remember all the times. However, if you have your mum or your partner around to remind you it might be a good idea!
Also personally, the urgency of a test in the morning has one of two effects for me: 1. I´m too scared so I refuse to study 2. I do more study than I´ve ever done previously. This might be because I´ve lost all my books and notes and at the last minute I can be desperate and pathetic enough for a friend to help me out with theirs...

I don't know if this rings true for most ADHD'ers but impulse buys and spending money on something I don't use a week after is a weakness for me... Could you do a video about controlling your impulses to start a new and sometimes very expensive interest or hobby. Either say a motorbike or a whole collection of something small... I can just dip my feet it seems all or nothing :/

i rewrote lyrics to my favorite songs to study the nervous system. 100% on every test. i could 'study' by listening to the recorded versions I made to karaoke tracksbwhile i drew, cleaned, etc. Then singing the songs in my head during my tests. 😅
just a suggestion if sitting for so long is tough

It's 2:30am, and I just finished an essay. The essay was due at midnight, but I kept telling myself "just one more video". When midnight came around, I was like "eh, my professor seems chill, I'm sure he'll accept it late. Lets see what's new in Netflix" Now I should be going to sleep to get enough rest for class tomorrow but instead I'm even procrastinating going to bed. lol. Ohhh another thing I forgot that also works, other then the body double thing, is for me to go through to information, and explain it to either my parents if they feel like listening to my coursework or to a friend, which is either someone I was already studying with, or being a body double over Skype (thanks Ellie!... Like every day... Ps.. You will love this video.. It has puppies.. And we're studying together tonight right?) I find that helps especially because I'm not only thinking it, I'm saying it out loud.. Sometimes listening to my friends explain the information is also way easier to understand and remember, even if it's literally what's in the textbook.. But this requires having a friend in the same class, who is willing to do her "review" with me..
Actually a lot of my friends say they don't mind helping me with homework or studying cuz it acts as their review and studying, since I ask way too many questions or don't understand things the first 5 times its explained.

I've found that when studying with binaural beats works wonderfully, but if you keep listening to the same track every time you study it starts to frustrate you, making it harder to focus, so get different tracks to mix it up.
P.S. I love how I'm always watching your videos to procrastinate haha... but they do help motivate me afterwards.. So I'll just watch your How to take the test, and then I'll start studying...

Tips: if you are a gamer like me, and have a specifikt game that you play alot try listening to that games soundtrack when studying. This works becuse your brain has already associated the music with focusing so it might help you focus were you normal found it hard to focus... it works for me! And for Pavlov and his dogs... or you just end up feeling like a badass becuse you solved that math asignment 😉
