As soon as you said “when I make a schedule, I have opportunity to fail. And I do. Which makes me aware of my deficit,” I started crying. I’ve never put into words why time management is my biggest stressor and the greatest source of anxiety. But you did for me. And it makes me so relieved to know I’m not alone in feeling that way.

It goes the other way, too. Some tasks you put off because you think they'll take too long, but in reality, they can be done in much less time.

I had this happen with hanging the shower curtain in my new apartment. I was stuck washing my hair under the bathtub tap or in the bath (neither of which worked great) for several months because I thought hanging the shower curtain would take much longer than it finally did. Part of it was that it involved climbing on a stool because I'm short. I expected that to consume lots of time because I expected it would involve climbing on it and then climbing down and moving it. There was a lot less of that then I thought. And it felt good to be able to shower and properly wash my hair after months of doing a half a**Ed job.

*UPDATE* -- I, too, find it intensely tedious to track how long things take me. Have I been keeping track for all my activities? uh, no. When I do, do I always *write down* my prediction? NOT HARDLY! But I will say this: even *beginning* to keep track of how long stuff takes me has already made a HUGE difference for me.
One shortcut I found is recording short activities in "voice memos" -- if I'm about to take my dog for a walk, I can easily start recording, say how long I think it'll take me, and stop when I get back -- and then I can name that file "walking the dog." And now I know taking my dog for a short walk before I have to leave for work takes 8 minutes, so I can't do it on my way out the door and still expect to get there on time.
Even if you don't plan on using a schedule, and even if you don't use this technique consistently, even if you end up adapting it to something completely different I really really suggest trying it!

If you read up on the pomodoro technique a little, you'll see that it is in fact a productivity tracking system for keeping track of the time it takes to do various tasks. At the end of the day, you have a record of how many pomodoros it took you to do the tasks, the number of times you had to cancel one, and the specific distractions that are slowing you down. It's a working log of your ADD. I'm somewhat bad at following up on this at the end of the day as the pomodoro technique tires me out (in that good, I've-been-working-hard-all-day-and-need-a-beer way) , so I'm hoping right now that the bullet journal you've pointed me to will help me structure that process a little better and give me an indexed catalogue of how long certain tasks take me.
I'm not suggesting that running up a forward moving clock is a bad idea to time your activities (well, actually I am :-) ); I'm suggesting that you are having difficulty with that you may just want to log and count pomodoros instead. When you underestimate the time it takes to do a task, you just add extra pomodoros, log them at the end of the day (I'm working on a bullet journal to do this), and you know for next time how much time you really need. On top of that, you get 5 minutes of "pizza" every 25 minutes while you're finding all this out.
I love your videos by the way. They are the most motivating resource on the internet right now and obviously backed by legitimate research, professional editing, and professional presentation. I find the quick edits, fast pace, and coherent , flowing narrative (with quick humeoous asides) keep me riveted and convey a ton of information in 5 minutes before my attention can wane. They almost mimic learning through hyperfocus: fast moving, slightly disjointed in visual and aural presentation, yet coherent in content. Those pauses in real life discussion are just holes that distraction can seep into, and you eliminate them here: hats off to your editors. You are making TH-cam what it should be. Mostly though they make me feel that I am not alone in this and motivate me to work on it. That remind me, I have to get back to my bullet journal.

Maybe you can break down "homework" into smaller pieces. Solve 1 page of math problems, writing 1 page of essay, or whatever kind of stuff you have to do (I'm sure you know that better than I do).

This reminded me of the hint I heard once that goes... don't tell yourself that "class starts at 9. I must be there by 9." Instead focus on the time that you MUST leave the house (or DEPARTURE TIME). For ME, I will pass the toothpaste tube and go "Oh I have to put the cap on that... that'll only take a few seconds." Then I go in the kitchen and think, "I really should fill the washer and set it...that'll only take a few minutes". Etc. Etc. Etc. And soon I am leaving the house at a couple of minutes before 9 KNOWING that I will NEVER get TO class at 9. - - - How much better it is to focus on, "I need to leave the house at 8:30" which WILL get me there by 9.

It took me so long to realize that. When I did I applied it to work only. The rest of my life I was still late. I am getting better by incorporating that into the rest of my life but it took so much longer I think because i perceived that there was no consequences to being late outside of work. I've started recognizing with some help that my adhd comes with a "consideration of others" issue. its getting better.

    • @monikawoods6175
      @monikawoods6175 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Yes, this works for me. I have 2 times for my schedule. Early late, and late early late. So when I need to be at work at 7:30, early late is 7:15. Late early late is 7:25. I focus on these 2 schedules and I am rarely late. I had a friend who was chronically late, I would always give her a time that allowed for her to arrive 15 minutes early and she would come in on time.

I have that issue too. It helps to tie them to "cues" -- i.e. when you wake up, you brush your teeth. When you go to bed, you lock the door. After you shower, you get dressed. Aaaaand -- when you open your computer, you check your calendar. (for example). Of course we're still gonna get bored of our tools and that's fine, then off to a new shiny one!

Hi. I'm first grade in my high school in Korea.(This account is my parent's one) As you would know, Korean school requires students a high level of concentration for long time. I have an adhd and I eat mph 36mg everyday sometimes don't but I eat it almost every day. Every morning in the weenkends like today, I literally never start my day before 2pm even if I get up 8am. I become lazy at my bed and get nervous and think of many things and I go out when I really need to for example when I have my academy. My school record is 17~49th out of 270~290 students. I usually get middle-upper or upper grades in my school. But it's just because I studied quite hard last year when I was in my middle school. But I have a serious problem. I can't start doing my tasks on all weekends!! And I can't divide my task to day and I can't make a plan to study certain subject. Sometimes I get great grades like upper 4% or upper 11% on some subjects but that is not stable and I am not able to maintain it since I have hard time dividing my time and estimate the time I'll need to do it. Also, there is academy in Korea. We go to academy and study subjects that we study in school such as Korean, English, Math, Science, and so on. I still have a hard time studying my subjects that I learn in academy but my teachers in academy manages my study so it's relatively easy to study subjects that I learn in academy. But, I don't study minor subjects such as history or social study etc.I can't do those things with a plan and can't do it successfully. I would really appreciate you if you could give me an advice. Thank you.

What if you have a task that takes different amounts of time, how would you factor that in? For example, I don't have a dishwasher and do my dishes by hand but it doesn't always take the same amount of time depending on how much there is to do. Thanks for any help!

In replying to Eric you literally spoke my thoughts & reservations. I used to have pads full of lists but I gave up because there were hundreds of reminders of what a failure I was! Same way I stopped blitzing my home when my kids were away for the weekend, I put hours of hard work in & they'd come home & trash it in an hour or two. So I just left it trashed because they made less mess. I cleaned my toilet & bath regularly but the rest was chaos until it got to a point when we had no hot water or heating for several months because I couldn't clear all the areas needed to get a new central heating system. Then social services came & my kids had to live with their dad, they ignored my calls for 13 days but then came round & said they could immediately come back. I now pay someone once a week to help me tidy but I know I know how to do it even better than her but can't seem to make myself start! Recently started CBT & I'm trying to retrain my brain from all the bad habits. I really like your videos. You get me like not many people do. Thank you xx

My sense of timing is so poor and so is my sister in law's, we both have ADD. We are neighbours and when her mum invites us over, she always takes off half an hour off the actual time. So, 1pm becomes 12:30pm because she knows we'll then be there at 1pm.
I love how her mum just looks at the fun side of it and the look on her face when we actually arrive early.

Yeah, me too and honestly? I don't think our fear is unreasonable. At the CHADD conference Eric talked about ADHDers being "time blind" -- we need stuff like timers and clocks and watches just like someone who can't see well needs glasses. No shame, we just need the extra help. And I realized after talking with him, I wouldn't try to drive a car without my contacts on, or I'd get into accidents every time I drove! Why have I kept trying to plan a schedule without a clear sense of how long things take? Of *course* I'll fail!

Time Sink. It feels a little big brother-y at first, but omg it times everything I do, labels it appropriately, and I don't even have to think about it until I go to read the report or get my data back out.

I want to thank you so much for making these videos. I just recently came across your videos as I was looking for some relief. It is so difficult to explain to friends and family about ADHD. I'm often told that I just need to be more mindful or stop being so lazy. I understand that ADHD is not a death sentence and people cope with it everyday. I just needed to hear that I'm not the only one who struggles and that it's okay to ask for help. Thank you!

Oh my goodness, I just learned soooo much from this one interview and realised a few things I never thought about before! Things that make me run late and make me feel overwhelmed, like not considering prep and cleanup time. Cleaning the fishtank is one example, I think with getting all the equipment I need and then clean up after it takes well over an hour whereas I thought it took only 30mins. I'm going to time myself today! Thank you so much to both of you!! xx

That introspective look on your face when you guys brought up schedules as a 'failure reminder'. Right in the feels :-(
Doing a great job with this show. Thank you for keeping the episodes short, having a perky and attention-grabbing persona, and being honest (possibly the hardest part, depending on your relationship to candor). Creating a show like this is a real time suck (like, I don't know how most peeps do it) and I'm sure you're "learning" a lot about time management techniques that work for you via this show. Keep at it.
I've been dealing with ADHD issues my whole professional life, and I wish this show came out 10 years ago--the normalization and compassion that you exhibit towards symptoms is one-of-a-kind, and it helps me to feel connected to an internet of people who probably didn't make it to the end of my first sentence. :-P

I highly recommend "Toggl Track" as the "Count-Up" Timer Eric suggested to use.
It's easy and intuitive to use and checks up on you should you forget to enter a time entry. Also you get weekly overviews of how long you worked on different tasks and you can group them.

Oh my gosh! What you said about losing spontaneity with schedules rings SO true! I didn’t have a name for this before, but it is exactly accurate! My partner is a very organization and lists based person and they sometimes get stressed out when they ask me what my plans are for the day and my response is “I’ll see when I get there”. When I’ve talked to them or therapists about being overwhelmed by tasks, they always directed me towards making a list, and couldn’t understand how something that was so freeing for them could be so agonizing and scary for me. I’m so glad I stumbled onto your channel because it is giving concrete names and strategies to things that I always thought were just problems with me. I have never been diagnosed with adhd but SO many of these experiences ring true.

Oh I have a great sense of how long a task could take *IF* I could stay hyper focused on it instead of bouncing around and doing half a dozen tasks simultaneously. That goes from 10 minutes to 3 hours and sometimes everything gets done and sometimes... not. But if I have the ADHD tornado of energy to do a little bit of cleaning or organizing in each room then I won't get bored with any one of the tasks because I'm bouncing from one to the next to the next to the next, but connected by one common soundtrack that I'm playing throughout the process. I recommend techno, something with a decent beat and maybe enough lyrics to catch my attention but not have to focus on them.

It feels like failing. If I don't put it down anywhere, I can't fail at the thing that's supposed to help me. Rejection sensitive dysphoria is a big thing with all of us and I think it has something to do with that too. Hearing someone else say this helps so much.

The perfection that I relate to scheduling is what gets me. I've tried to create schedules when I was in college, and I try now, and I make them.... Then DON'T check them. Then DON'T look again at them like others said. Although a giant desk calender hanging on our kitchen wall has helped with bills and some other things.

I have my problems with planning a schedule, for the same reasons as you. I have several strategies: One appointment per day: That way I can make sure it happens on time. "Free floating" time management: In a week I have certain blocks of work time per day. I do what feels right in the moment to do in that block, given that the outcome is work related. Minimize pre/post time: Get your tools near the tasks, move your files from wherever to your project folder. And I have a different problem: Routines build up on their own, and I have my problem getting out of them.

here is a time management tool I use: I choose a block of time to devote to a particular subject and then just work in that category for that amount of time. like "clean kitchen for 15 minutes" or "work in craft room for 90 minutes/two 40 min blocks with a 10 min break.
then if I finish early I can reward myself with a break to look at cute cats or read my online comics. to me that feels less constrained.

I am going to reduce it to 5 7 10 because I gave up at 15 and started hyper focusing on learning Spanish? One of the six tasks was break. My break turned into hours of Spanish verb conjugation? LOL my hyper focus gift/piece of coal helped me graduate #1 in my nursing program many years ago. So it can be a really good thing. I wish I could get focused on 15 loads of unfolded laundry. I wish I knew I was the way I was because of ADHD when I was younger--I only got diagnosed this year. I suspected it but nothing I ever read was so on-point as everything you post! I bawled on the 'Top 10 Things List" you liked about having ADHD, because I just thought those things were the best parts of my personality, what I liked about myself, what made me unique-- I had NO idea it was all ADHD-related! Thank you for being so transparent! You've made me understand myself better and have streamlined stuff that has taken me the hard way to begin to figure out. Not knowing how long something takes is exactly where I get into trouble every time. Also, I have a strong judgement about how long something SHOULD take me and I force myself to do it within that timeframe. I punish myself if I don’t live up to it (f.e. working late or not taking a break without counting the work hours). Needles to say this is why I feel horrible about my planning a lot and why I searched for this video to begin with.
From tomorrow I will start up-timing myself! Also, because I live alone, I don’t notice when I get distracted. I was thinking of filming myself during my mornings so I get a more realistic view of what I actually do.

I huge mistake I make is to always think something takes the best time I ever accomplished. Just because I was able to start and finish an institutional video in a single day once in college, doesn't mean that's the time it usually takes. It should be scheduled for at least 3 days. I managed to do it in one day because I had a lot of pressure and nothing else to get in my way that day (I also had most of the props ready to go). That's an example. I do it with everything.

5:23 - This I ALWAYS forget. I’m especially bad when I have to go anywhere. I ALWAYS forget to factor in the driving time or the walking time to get to where I need to be. I TRY to be aware of this by bringing my appointment time forward and including the travelling time into the appointment time in my schedule. So a 1pm checkup will show as a 12:45 checkup as it will take me 15 minutes to walk to the dentist before my actual checkup. Obviously this only works if I REMEMBER to factor in my travel time, it’s a work in process…

I recently got my dream job of being an instrument repair tech, and the 1 question I get in 50 different ways is how long a repair will take, and sometimes it takes 20 mins, sometimes I'm never left alone long enough to even touch a tool until I'm 6 hours into an 8 hour shift. it's the number 1 thing that gets me chewed out by customers for, and trying to explain to people that there's such a back log of repairs of differing complexities and the fact that nothing is ever what it initially looks like before you dig into a job, and I just sincerely don't know when anything is ever going to get finished. I had to learn the hard way that unless you say it's already done, you're taking too long, it's just the nature of the job. they bring their instruments in because they don't know and understand how to fix it and what it really involves; including time. If you call me and ask me something commonly done, like how long it'd take me to restring your guitar for you, I'd say 20 mins, but if I have a line of 6 people asking me to restring their guitars who just so happen to show up before you, it's not just 20 × 6 = x amount of time it'll take to even get to your instrument, but the time I have to spend getting paperwork and liabilities covered per customer before and during trying to get a guitar not just fitted with fancy new strings, but also take the old ones off and cleaning your poorly maintained instrument, there's more nitpicking I could lay out here, but my point is that if you want to know when your instrument will be ready, and not just how long it'd take me to do it at an uninterrupted pace, then the answer is strictly "I don't know." I'm not really allowed to say that, but I really don't, and I'm always really nervous when I see someone walk into the shop with their instruments, because it's something that always gets asked and something I never know the answer to. I'm hoping that once I get a hang of how the actual system for the shop works, it'll help me in bring able to plan out and prioritize more effectively, but learning how to plan for things that need to get done with room to wiggle with is def. something I need to learn how to do. To Google! many thanks to you, Jessica, and Eric as well, for giving me an idea to start figuring out a solution to this issue that'll work for me! I generally find it quicker when I fail with different strats til I figure one out that works, but knowing different solutions that've helped others is always helpful to finding what helps me.

    • @ADHDreWired
      @ADHDreWired 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Over promise, and under deliver. Also, are you repairing while dealing with customers? If so, that is killing your productivity. Every time you have to shift between repair and customer, you lose significant time getting back to what you were doing. If there is any feasible way to block time for repair so it's not interrupted by customers, do it. It will save your company both time and money. Repair is a skilled job. Taking customer orders doesn't require the same kind of skill, and could be done someone making less than you are. By having someone only deal with customer requests, which would allow you to focus on the work that only YOU can do, if there is enough work, this would increase profits and productivity, and customer satisfaction.

ADHD reWired Podcast with Eric Tivers completely agree! from what I can tell, there was a change of management and the store is understaffed altogether, from what I can tell. to a certain degree, either the other tech or I needs to be there because we're the ones who can diagnose and estimate what kinds of repairs are most likely to get it working like new, and my main co-worker is not a people person, to put it kindly. Everyone, myself included, believe that if I'm there, customers should come to me with questions, and check ins. My co-worker is much quicker and book-knowledge aware on a lot of repairs, and I'm more experience because of the whole starving artist who either had to learn how to fix it, or just go without it (I was trained in various styles on multiple instruments, so there were plenty of opportunities to get to see how my instruments worked, hahaha), so I have a general knowledge of how to do it all, but I don't know the vocabulary very well, although I've been improving. I think once m. co-worker and I are able to get our own strengths and weaknesses balanced with each other and we get the back log of repairs that've been waiting for techs to work on them, it'll get a lot more efficient and the work load won't seem so overwhelming. I found it rather intriguing that this video would come out while I am really having to pay attention and assess to how quickly and effectively see that repairs are checked in and finished quite a bit more than I'd had to ever do previously in my life. thanks for the response, it brings up some points that have popped up amongst the millions of wiki pages I've come to refer to as an easier way for people to really understand how my thought processing is non-linear but not as disconnected as it might initially seem. If thoughts had blue links to various pages that led to different and similar links in themselves, and you had to click on every blue link and start to read the page it leads to, you can jump pretty far from your initial page, pretty fast, although it isn't uncommon for the links to get you cycling back through previous pages.

What I do is create deadlines instead of a schedule. For instance, if my Musical Theatre class starts at 11 & I wake up at 10, 10:50 is my getting ready deadline. I have to be ready to walk out the door right at 10:50. So, I guess it is a schedule but I find, if I look at it as a deadline, I get it done.

How did I miss this one? It was from 2016! So true, too..."I'm afraid a schedule will ruin my spontaneity, and I won't be fun..." and that alone proves I have anxiety, which I have denied my entire life!
