I am no longer reading the comments on this video. They're of very poor quality. Mainly just accusing us of "forgetting" games. Guys, we can't read your minds and include exactly the games YOU want each episode. It's very frustrating to read comments saying "You forgot _____" or "How could you not include ______?" or "No ______? I'm so disappointed!". We're definitely fine with people suggesting games for future installments or suggesting we try certain games (which a lot of you have been doing, thanks!) but the whining is not cool at all. So I probably won't be reading nor responding to any more comments on this particular video. I can now understand why AVGN doesn't comment on his videos any more. We'll continue to include the games we want to include. Apologies to all of the really cool fans (which are most of you) for this. We really like you guys! Feel free to talk to us on Facebook, Twitter and Reddit. :)
Can I just say I actually really like your format. Other than just going for the most obvious games in a genre you often show off original and unique games that, otherwise, don't get talked about. I know you are reading anything anymore but maybe somehow you read this and then you can kiss my sores with the gentle salve of your reply.
Love it! Don't worry about negative comments... People are just passionate about their classic games. It's a huge compliment to you from your fans, even if it sounds negative. Keep it up!
Tommy Lasorda Baseball is the only baseball game I've played, ever. My wife met him a couple of years ago a restaurant - if I'd been there, I woulda told him about playing this game.
@@mrt9539 I think you have to be a sports fan to really enjoy it. Part of the reason sports fans can be so critical of the modern games because they know every detail of what should be portrayed
OK I CAN'T RESIST! I'm finding myself reading comments despite declaring that I wasn't going to. I'm a filthy liar. I just care too much about what you guys say, even the thoughtless comments. :)
Was fun. That Sega Soccer game's OST was pretty legit. Really surprised NBA Jam didn't get brought up here though. Maybe there does need to be a second Sports Games episode. :P
Here are my favorite sports games: - NFL 2K5 - NBA Jam/Tournament Edition/Hangtime - NBA Live '97 - Virtua Tennis - 2 Xtreme - Sydney 2000 Olympics - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1, 2, and Underground - Mario Tennis (Nintendo 64) - Wii Sports/Resort - 1080 Snowboarding - Wave Race 64 - Steep Slope Sliders - Winter Heat I can't believe I just listed my favorite sports games, lol.
NBA JAM Tournament Edition, NHL Hockey '92 and NFL Blitz 2000, RBI Baseball, Baseball Stars 2, 2020 Baseball are the only retro sports games I'll play.
HA HA I KNOW! I thought of that as I was editing the episode together and I should have said "I'm going to take the Browns to the SuperBowl". Such a missed opportunity. So far you're the only one to catch it though. :)
The ending was pure gold. I am the kinda guy who likes sports games with TWISTS. Games like Mutant league hockey and football,Super High Impact,Nba jam,Baseball simulator 1,000 (and it's SNES counterpart),Arch rivals and pigskin footbrawl! Seriously though technical sports games are crap and full of boredom. the ONLY ones I enjoyed were "tecmo bowl" and *sighs while putting up shield for protection* Bases loaded 2 : The second season. Another great episode guys. Keep up the awesome work!
Ice Hockey for the NES NHL 94 for the Genesis Mutant League Hockey for the Genesis Mutant League Football for the Genesis Baseball Stars for the NES Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball for the SNES Mario Golf for the GB Color NBA Jam TE for Genesis or SNES Mario Tennis for the GB color All of these games are timeless in my view. Still fun today!
God I love Tecmo Bowl. The best time I've ever had with it is when I had 3 friends over and we had a tournament. It ended up with all of us shouting like manics when ever a touch down or an interception happened.
One of my favorite football games when I was younger was Troy Aikman Football for the Super Nintendo. I will never forget this one play that happened. The game was tied and time was running out. So I threw the football deep, my guy caught it and was about to score but was tackled and he fumbled on the 1 yard line. The computer picked it up and started running towards my endzone, I tackled him when he was about to score and he fumbled. I picked it up and ran all the way for a touchdown to win the game. It was the craziest thing I have er seen. The best part is that when you fumble in the game, the announcer shouts out fumble, so you kept hearing it. Lol good times.
You said if this video got 60,000 views you would do another sports games video. This video is currently sitting at 62,800 views. I'm anxiously awaiting the second one, Joe and Dave!
Last night I had a dream that I found a copy of Super Tennis fully boxed and mint for 320yen and I snapped it up. As I walked out of the department store, I realized the box was a fake..... I have some very strange dreams.
Great episode. My favorite retro sports title is 2020 Baseball. It was a Neo Geo game that was later ported to the SNES and the Genesis. Power ups! Cut scenes! Men, women and robots cracking 700ft home runs! That game was amazing!
Only football games I liked really are the Dreamcast 2K games, Joe Montana games on Genesis, Mutant Football, Tecmo Bowls, and NFL Blitz. I think that is all. Might be forgetting some stuff. I love arcade style sports. Way better than simulation.
You guys have one of the best retro series out there. Love the variety and the Nintendo Vs Sega rivalry, brings me back to the early 90's. So keep it up and congrats on having one of the best web series out there...
Not much of a sports game fan, but I always enjoyed Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey. It didn't take itself seriously and was hilarious and fast-paced. Another good episode, guys!
Out of all the Tecmo Bowl games, Super Tecmo Bowl on the Nes, TB Kickoff on the DS and TB Throwback on the PS3/360 are the best in the series IMO. I recommend checking them out.
Great video as always. I just started watching your videos and love all of them! Yes I do love sports games so I appreciate this video. I loved NBA Live 95 and NBA Jam most, but I also loved Tecmo Super Bowl and MLBPA Baseball.
Great episode! I'm usually not a sports game fan but I do enjoy some arcade style sports games. Some games I'd love to see if there is another sports episode are NBA Jam, Sensible Soccer, NFL Blitz, RedCard, Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey and the Mutant League games
I love that you guys brought up this topic. There are some sports gems out there for sure. I still think Genesis had some of the best sports titles out there. I was blown away when I first heard the speech in the game like Joe Montana's Football. Very entertaining and informative video guys. Nice work.
Thanks! I did record footage from Joe Montana for this episode but left it out until next time for time reasons. That voice in the opening screen floored me back int he day.
You guys truly ROCK!!.. I am 32yr old and love sharing the nostalgia. I don't comment much(on any of my subscriptions) but you guys make for some good entertainment. I am in law enforcement and plenty of my cop buddies have been turned on to your channel. Keep up the good work guys.
I really don't enjoy sports games that much. That being said; I still watched this video like 8 times. The way you guys do your videos is a new standard for enjoyment, humor and retro-game reviews! I watch it once a day. I must habe re watched the "Saturn" review like 30 times. Your friendship and commentary is awesome and hilarious! Please keep doing what you do. You are my favorite game reviewers! Thank you for kicking so much ass!
Guys, I love that you did a sports video. I actually like looking at the progression of sports games. You can see so much of the history of games whether it is user interface or speech. Plus, my favorite skit of yours is the Craig Stadler skit.
I don't like sports games, but this video was entertaining. Seeing those old games and remembering the button mashing till the veins in my neck popped.
I never liked the Bases Loaded series, from childhood till now. I really loved Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball for the SNES, played many a season as well as played many All Star games and even the Home Run Derby was fun.
I don't watch sports, and I don't play sports games, but I just watched 30 minutes of your reviews and was entertained. I think that's a sign you guys are doing something right. Or very very wrong. ;)
Like your show. I'm a sports fan and a video game fan so thanks for doing this episode even thought yall didn't seem to enjoy it. I like Madden without the passing windows because you can see what the defense is doing. I still play most of the games you reviewed except bases loaded (I hate that view).
I'm no sports fan and have never played sports video games. I gotta say though this video was fun to watch regardless and I appreciate all your videos. Keep'em coming guys great work
I actually own madden 92, 94, and 95! 95 is the best by far. It's pretty easy to destroy the computer, but it's fun to play with friends. Also I owned based loaded as a kid, you totally should've shown the scene where the pitcher gets beat up if he beans the batter too much! LOL! Great episode! Even though you forgot hockey (EA's NHL '94 is awesome) and NBA Jam, I'll still say it was a good episode!
Great episode! I loved the Athlete Kings games on Saturn. But you missed out some personal favourites, Pocket Tennis for the NGPC, Track and Field for the PS1, Mario Tennis for GBC and lest wii forget, Wii Sports
Some of my favorite sports games, by genre: Baseball Stars (NES), NBA Jam (GEN), NHL 94 (GEN), Nintendo World Cup (NES), Mario Tennis (N64), Tecmo Bowl (NES), Hot Shots Golf (PSX), Mike Tyson's Punch-Out! (NES).
Man, I spent so much time playing Tecmo Super Bowl III on the Genesis when I was a kid, that's probably one of my favorite sports games of all time. I'd be all for another sports episode guys, there's still so much you haven't covered. I also feel bad for Joe, he used to have friends, and now all he had is Dave. The poor guy...
Greatest Heavyweights!! I've held onto that one for a looong time, LOVE it! I've actually played through the entire career mode, and my character was soo stacked lolol, I wonder if that's still saved? Great video as always, guys!
Informative as always guys!! I love tennis games of all eras with my fav being the original Top Spin which I played at an arcade. 1 sports game that comes to mind was a winter Olympics on the Mega Drive in where 1 discipline was cross country skiing which you had to shoot targets!! Oh yeah... NBA JAM!!!
Hey Joe, I don't know if somebody has already commented, but the player you control on Lakers vs. Celtics IS indeed marked - he has black sneakers and black socks. It took me a while to figure it out in the nineties. Great game, it was very popular in my native Brazil, where, as you know, SEGA was huge. Keep up the excelent work.
Some great games that were left out are NBA Jam, NFL Blitz, Vitua Tennis, Mutant League Football/Hockey, and I also remember having a lot of fun with NBA Street. PS: David Robinson played for the San Antonio Spurs and his nickname was the Admiral because he served in the Navy.
Awesome episode! Sports games are oft forgotten when people do video game reviews just because the people who are into sports games typically aren't huge game enthusiasts (I'm the exception). One game I wish you'd have mentioned was Bases Loaded 3 for the NES as it was one of my favorite baseball games as a kid. Loved that game. Bruno from El Paso was THE MAN at bat. :D
Nice video. I'll have to check some of these games out. Some of my favorite sports games are the virtua tennis, wave racer, and ssx series. They are all great sports series.
I really enjoyed this video! It brought me back to my childhood. My brothers owned a Genesis and were obsessed with sports games. We had NBA Live 95, Bill Walsh College Football (like Madden, but with college teams), NBA Jam, and others. Good times with them. Also, that ending was hilarious. That "chant" will be stuck in my head for days now. I really enjoy y'all's show! Keep up the good work. I look forward to the next episode! I'd love to see another sports one, but if you do another one, might I suggest an "Over the Top Sports Games" episode, with games like NBA Jam, Super Baseball Simulator 1000, and games like that.
Emmitt Smith Football on the SNES. I ran the "Sweep Left" play every time and it broke the game. It was perfect. The voiceovers still resound in my mind during every day life. "Boom! The quarterback's dooown for the count."
Great Episode, Ive never been much of a sport fan, but Ive always enjoyed sports games. today's games are to sim like to be much fun, but there are some genesis/snes games that are a lot of fun still to play
Gotta talk about NBA Jam and Mega Man's Soccer if you do another one of these! And I actually enjoyed this ep, even if I've never really cared about any sports games other than the aforementioned two and Tecmo Bowl / Blades of Steel (which it feels like you guys already talked about in a previous episode, if I recall correctly...)
Nice video! One complaint though: When you mentioned Tecmo Super Bowl, actually there is an NES version and the 16-bit ones do not run as fast as the NES one. The NES one runs exactly as fast as the original Tecmo Bowl, so there's that.
My favourite sports games are golf games. Aside that, Kunio Kun no Nekketsu Soccer - I played it a lot on my Pegasus(Famicom clone - very popular here in Poland in 90s).
No love for the NES Baseball Stars? The game was very customizable, especially for the time. You can change players names, attributes, make your own teams, hire players and fire players. The fire players screen was awesome. Plus the music was awesome. I still find myself humming the song that plays when a runner is in scoring position. So if you ever do another Sports show you have to cover this game.
Loved this episode. I am the same way. I love the old school sports games but not the newer ones. I would very much like to see a sequel with perhaps some hockey games. *cough* blades of steel. *cough*
You guys should definitely try Major League Baseball featuring Ken Griffey Jr. on N64. One of my favorite sports games and even regular games ever. Great arcade action, perfect control, amazing sound. And it's cheap as hell to boot.
Bill Lambier's Combat Basketball is a game I used to find fun, once you get past slightly stiff controls and a little learning curve. NBA Street and NHL Hitz (I have mine on GC) are another two sports series that deffo do not take themselves seriously.
This is great! Typically I don't play sports games, but you guys really show off a great range, and a few I might look into now. Time to go crush a beer can on my forehead and grunt. Thanks! :)
Loved the episode guys. You dudes need to check out MLB Power Pros (PS2/Wii) if you want a recent, insanely fun and arcadey Japanese baseball game. It also has an RPG mode!
My favorite NES sports games were Blades of Steel (which lets you play Gradius during intermission), Baseball Stars, and Punch Out. I had NFL Quarterback Club on SNES which was fun, oh and Wayne Gretzky and the NHLPA All Stars.
"Waaaaaaaah they didnt cover my favorite game waaaaaah". Man some of you people are just a bunch of whiners. Maybe they dont have that game, or maybe they've covered it already. Stop whining and enjoy the vids.
Thank you! Many people expect us to read their minds. Many also think we need to include every game in every video. Those kinds of comments can be pretty frustrating to read. Instead, we'd appreciate suggestions for a future installments instead of "you forgot..." or "how could you leave out..." etc. Thanks to all of the people who ARE actually suggesting games for us to try like Baseball Simulator, Bad News Baseball and a few others. :)
HAL's Hole in One Golf was one of the first 3 games I ever owned, when me and my brother had our SNES in '92. The other two were Super Mario World (obviously), and Super Bowling. I played a ton out of this and Mario back in the day.
You know, I almost wasn't going to watch this since I don't usually play sports games. I decided to anyway because I know you guys put a ton of work into your show. I really enjoyed this episode! I remember playing a few of those games when I was a kid. The ending was hilarious! If you guys do another episodes I'd love to see some hockey games in there. NHL 96 had this glitch where if you shot the almost exactly parallel to the net it'd go in almost every time. Once we figured that out my brother and I would end up ridiculous scores that looked more like basketball game scores LOL
Kinda got the insinuation that people who like sports games don't play any other types of games. It's just one genre... doesn't have an effect on someone's overall gaming habits.
I hate most sports games, but of course, GameSack makes a great episode about Sports....my favorites are the arcade style games....like NBA Jam, Dunk Dreams, NFL Blitz, Super Baseball 2020
I hate sports and I don't play sports games, but I always enjoyed watching my brother play sports games, so this was awesome! Thanks guys, I enjoy your videos a lot. Keep it up!
My favourite sports games are Madden 92, EA Hockey and PGA Tour Golf 2 on the Megadrive. I also loved Fifa 99 on the original Playstation. Virtua Tennis is great fun, and has lots of cool little mini-games when you're training up your character in career mode. The Tiger Woods golf games were great, and Fight Night Round 3 on the 360 was awesome.

I also feel bad for Joe, he used to have friends, and now all he had is Dave. The poor guy...
The Tony Hawk games are my favorite sports games, I have most of them. Also more people need to watch Game Sack!
Legitimately loved that outro scene.
Great episode, you guys can even make sports games look good.
Nice video. I'll have to check some of these games out. Some of my favorite sports games are the virtua tennis, wave racer, and ssx series. They are all great sports series.
some of my favorites were NFL Quarterback Club '98, Mutant League Hockey, Jammit, and Troy Aikman Football
Great video. Thank you guys for putting so much effort in showing us your collection. You are awesome!
Thank You.
Tecmo Super Bowl on the NES was good football game but like Dave said after the 16 bit days I got out of the sports games.
Cool I learned a lot this episode. I don't know much about sports games. :)
Great Episode, Ive never been much of a sport fan, but Ive always enjoyed sports games. today's games are to sim like to be much fun, but there are some genesis/snes games that are a lot of fun still to play
That ambulance in Madden '92 is hilarious, they should bring silly stuff like that back
Gotta talk about NBA Jam and Mega Man's Soccer if you do another one of these!
Nintendo World Cup and Blades of Steel were my favourite sports games.
Good video!
Fantastic episode, I really want to try baseball stars!! Neo Geo has some fantastic sports games
Couldn't find College Hoops 2008, but I did find 2007. Hope it's a decent sub until I can find the 2008 version. Keep on giving us gold, guys!
It’s my party and I’ll whine if I want to! :)
HAL's Hole in One Golf was one of the first 3 games I ever owned, when me and my brother had our SNES in '92. The other two were Super Mario World (obviously), and Super Bowling. I played a ton out of this and Mario back in the day.
I like that you gave plenty of time to the lesser-known titles. I'd also have covered Sensible Soccer on the SNES!
Great story.
Keep it up!
This is pretty terrifying. After the video ended, an alarm across the street started and it sounded EXACTLY like that Bases Loaded 2 music.
