      @@gordenramsauce well even Perry is not a one-dimensional bad guy. Perry is tormented, which is not an excuse for him at all, but they portray him in a more layered way. which is good. I personally liked that they portrayed why is it so hard to leave your abuser. in so many movies and series you just got a one-dimensional abuser, who is a bad guy from first sight and you just wonder: how the victim could not see it and staying there? With Perry and Celeste's self-blaming it portrays a more realistic picture of it.

      I had trouble with the ending where it was just images, sound and no dialogue where as the book of course had talking. I Would've preferred it because I would've liked them reacting to what Perry did to Jane while asking what they're going to do now which helps it lead into season 2 nicely.

    • @RK-ep8qy
      @RK-ep8qy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Amber Cotrone *it was super predictable*, the only thing I didn't predict was Perry dying, I thought it'd be Renata but Bonnie killing him was obvious from her watching in the bushes, it only made sense for the wholesome character to kill him. And Max being the bully? Obvious that he'd copy what he sees from his dad and the fact Perry and Jane never met? Of course he's the rapist. It gave us some nice duality between Max and Ziggy nature vs nurture malarkey.

    The show brings up a couple times if there's something in Ziggys past that could be violent going as far as to ask who his father was because Ziggy just looks like an empathetic nurturing child.
    In the end the ones who end up violent are the ones who live with the violence in their home. Not Ziggy.

    Bonnie was the one I liked consistently through the whole show. As you said, a whole person. Maddy was the one I was rooting for to have a whole life and feel fulfilled. She constantly needed approval or acceptance but at the same time fighting every chance she got. She was similar to Perry in a way (minus the insane criminal element). Same in a way they both are needy, live in the negative and aggressive.

      I know you commented this a year ago but - you can tell (though it is not explicitly stated) that Jane moved there in an attempt to chase her attacker. It is made evident through the shots of her running along the beach in the purple dress from the night she was assaulted chasing the man in the suit and the connecting shots of her running in the same place for exercise. It is blatantly said in the book that she saw him looking at real estate there, but I do think that you can tell in the show that she has connected Monterey with her attacker.

      @@OlgaGax I thought that too. When Ed shows up at her workplace to agree to peacemaking with her during the upcoming dinner between the couples (EdxMadeline and BonniexNathan), he tries to explain his behaviour towards Nathan as "being supportive of Madeline". Bonnie responds something along the lines of "everybody has problems/demons". That line got me wondering what was her backstory. Unfortunetely the first season left her as the least developed character of the 5 female leads, so I'm glad that they made a second season where they could explore her more.

    Excellent video. You really nailed down what I find to be most poignant about this story. I was first introduced to Big Little Lies as an audiobook, which was narrated by an Australian woman (since the author is Australian and the book was initially set there), so it took quite a bit of adjustment for me to get used to seeing the same story in an American setting. Sure you still had the divine Nicole Kidman representing the Aussies, but I worried that something could be lost in adaptation. My fears were completely unfounded as the show actually improved on the book in a number of ways. Many of the complexities were better illustrated in a visual medium than in a book.

    • @morganpaige1698
      @morganpaige1698 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      lyannastarkweather it's hard to make a bad show with this all star cast, the story is just the icing on the cake. They found a way to show character development for every single character, even the supporting roles - all in one season. The soundtrack and cinematography were gorgeous, the screenplay was flawless. But the characters are what really did it for me, they are somehow so relatable when I have nothing in common with them at all. The school, the coffee spot, they all felt so real. Even down to the way they dress, it was just beautiful. This is a great example of using the film medium to its fullest extent, not wasting a single frame.

    They billed this as what used to be called a "comedy-drama" now a dramedy and the whole time I'm,watching like, "...not seein' the funny."

      I agree, it's not funny but it did have some funny moments, particularly from Renata " ..make sure you mention that my daughter was almost in a coma " as Madeline was getting up to speak to the parents in the Auditorium....I replayed that part a few times because Renata is just beyond dramatic! Love her,!

      That's because comedy in literature doesn't mean funny.. it means that's the a big majority of main characters end up happy.. like The Merchant of Venice and Tempest.
      Tradegy on the other hand is where they don't.. like Macbeth or Hamlet

    The show did not put us against Bonnie. She was nice and likable from the start.

    • @anasaavedra5600
      @anasaavedra5600 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d say the whole pitting us against Bonnie is highly understandable when you have a high severely amounts of Madeleines insecurity because of her youth or that mainly it’s not her she’s hating on it’s rather the ex husband who’s probably picking something younger and hotter than you just to really piss her off and it’s clearly works

    holyshit this was good. I gotta watch this show. the bit about Celeste really hit me hard about her finally sharing about her “her worst secret”. I’ve become so used to hiding my eating disorder and keeping up this facade that I’m perfectly fine and doing great with everything in life. But that’s so not true. shame hides in the shadows.

    Such a beautiful show..teaches us that not everything that seems to be perfect is actually perfect..deals with serious issues like rape mental and physical abuse and infidelity..this show starts with the women hating each other to supporting each other and understanding each otherr..I lovee it..the characters acting story visuals plus the soundtrack is soo good 💕

      That's a good idea to be spoiled of the best parts of the show before watching it. Yeah right... In fact, you should do this with every movie/serie you will watch in the future. I would have appreciated to know that the character of Bruce Willis is dead from the beginning when watching for the first time The Sixth Sense. That's the best way to enhance a cinematic experience.

    I love Renata. I get Jane's frustration as well but if some kid was constantly hurting my daughter, I wouldn't stand for it either. Especially if I felt the kid and the mother weren't taking responsibility and helping to improve the situation. Yes, it wasn't Ziggy in the end but Renata had no reason to believe it wasn't and Madeline threw gasoline on the fire because she was jealous of Renata's success.
    Madeline is a Karen in disguise and owes more apologies than anyone in the group. She treated both Bonnie and Renata badly.

  • @selty

    I actually disagree about S1 ending. The closing of the lighter signifies the detective has given up. S2 wasn't planned so it makes sense because the lighter represented the unfulfilled investigation, it implied the fire would be lit eventually when all was revealed but it wasn't because it didn't matter.

    Well, for me Renata was the "antagonist" for way she deal with all the situation and mistreat Jeannne since the begging, instead to act as a reasonable person. While Madelaine made a lot mistake but could "dislike" her because her friendship was to pure, but I agree the story give us more reasons why to don't like Madalaine than Renata.

    It is a great message and I loved the show but the truth is that it is not realistic. In reality, letting other people's know things like this hardly ever result in help and new friends and more often leads to more judgement and abandoned, things are taken out of context and used against u and the whole community will just get you down further in that hole. That often includes doctors and therapists
