      You are just islamophobic ...
They is well documented evidence that in christian cultures women were seen as baby vessels by the patriarchical structures of the churchs.Killing enslaving and raping women while trying to enforce christianity. The crusaders weren't gentlemen.
This is no time for racism but thinking how fascism grabs the people where they are most vulnerable : bodily Autonomy .There's nothing more important as the rights of women's bodies to understand how much value a society puts on their people .
The U.S is the best example for this mistreatment :
-raping black women in times of slavery
-making them infertile so the "inferior" doesn't outnumber
-killing indeginous women and still kidnapping them from reservations
-racist steorotyping of nonwhite women and their fetishization
-canceling planned parenthood which mostly helped women and establishing a health care system which mostly punish women or people with vaginas
      -also experimenting on foreign women
-in 14 states of the u.s child marriage is still legal to some extend
-And using women in films as tool for men to evolve rather than being an own person.
Please educate youraelf ,you will hurt maybe people you love

@Lola Montez Christianity isn't repressing, abusing and killing women- how naive. Guess you haven't been paying any attention to the anti-abortion legislation that's been taking the sovereignty away from women over their own bodies? Guess you haven't been paying attention to the sex trafficking going on in so many Christian societies. Haven't been paying attention to the statistics of how many females have been raped or molested in their life time. The info is at your finger tips, arm yourself with knowledge- for your own safety at least...

Thanks for posting this video. Its a great overview and and exploration of this extremely timely drama. The sad reality is that we need not look to some third world country for examples of this type of gender based oppression. Some of the laws being passed right here in America today with regard to a woman's right to make fundamental decisions about their own bodies are clear indicators of this phenomenon. And as such should serve as frightening reminders to us all to stay aware and active. Its true that unless ALL of us are free none of us are free. I encourage you both to please keep posting.

True! I think so often women are pit against eachother. I work in electrical engineering, and I'm the only woman there. So often I hear men saying stuff like: 'women can't be friends, it's always drama with female friends etc'. I don't see that, I've got female friends that I've stuck with since grade school, and I've seen plenty of back-stabbing from men. But I feel that even in media, it's all about the girl fights, bitch wars etc. I think some women even start behaving like that, since it's expected from us: to view other women as competition instead of allies. Especially younger women will view things like 'oh, you're cool, you're not like other girls!' as a compliment and gladly talk shit about their own gender. When actually, it's really a back-handed argument. That person is saying: well, women in general suck, but you're all right! Imagine this about race: oh, black people suck, but you're pretty cool.... for a black person. It's the same generalisation though, and it's harmfull as fuck!

@@myzen1729 Nah sorry to burst your bubble, but while women tend to have lower libido, there are so many women that sleep around in their younger years, just like men do. Women tend to put guys in just a few categories as well, just as men do with women. Is he handsome and charismatic? Fuck him or date for a while. Is he well-off financially, kind and funny? He might not be has intensely attractive sexually, but he'll be seen as great partner to settle down with. Also, I'm not saying that is bad, or that everyone does this consciously, or at all, but it happens a lot.

    • @KarlSnarks
      @KarlSnarks 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

@DarthYuYevon I can't find hard data on this, but to me it actually seems that rise in LGB-acceptance (I didn't include the TQ because those are about identity, not sexuality) actually makes monogamy more prevalent under LGB population. While gay men probably still have higher levels of promiscuity (because we're all men, and men tend to have higher libido) most LGB people I know directly or indirectly, either are in a monogamous relationship, or have some future wish for one. Part of the reason for higher promiscuity in the past, is 1: it's easier to have underground sexual encounters than it is to have long-lasting relationships, because people will find out. 2: attachment theory says people who didn't receive love in their childhood consistently, will act out sexually more often. Since LGB people were often ostracized by their family, this could've led to attachment issues.
On the other hand, hookup culture is making non-monogamy more common in the general population, whether straight or gay.

julijakeit First of all, why everytime we talk about women's issues someone has to come in "B-BUT THE MEN!", yes we are all very aware of the problems men face, especially because a lot of it also stems from mysoginy. Second, just because some people in the world have it worse, doesn't mean we also don't have issues, or we would never go foward. This is not the oppresions Olympics and if it was, your argument would fail again because women are MORE objetified than men in the Western world, without a doubt. Third, I love to see people throwing "western world" around as if the whole western world is North America and Europe. I live in Brazil, sure I can choose who I'll marry, I can vote and work and I love my country, but here there is also a rape every 11 minutes, 70% of those rapes are commited by men against children and teenagers. Every 7 seconds a women is victim of domestic violence. 2 in every 3 female college student have been victims of some sort of violence thanks to their gender IN college (as a college student myself, can confirm). Thankfully, at least 90% of the population agrees there is a problem and that men should learn how to NOT harass women, still doesn't change the fact this still happens. I could put my source here, but it's in portuguese.

HB, the show is indeed Feminist propaganda. It has some aspects on it designed to make it look more neutral, like the fact that some men are also oppressed. But the message is clear. It encourages women to be hyper vigilant about their "rights", with this, it means of course their right to kill babies. The goal of the movie is not to entertain, as movies' goals used to be. There are clear Liberal purposes on it, like their motivation to make Christian's look bad. Liberals want to destroy the institution of family and want to kill babies. They also want population control. It is all implicit in the movie. If you dont see it, you are blind.

I was adopted into an extremely Conservative Christian family when I was 10 they were very big on the fact that women clean up after men and take care of kids if a woman had a secular job and children it was looked down upon men didn't belong in the kitchen that was a woman's job my dad wouldn't even start a washer I think maybe once or twice he did in nine years. he hated being in the kitchen. my mom has a mess and she could get extremely exhausted and she would have to beg him to help her.when we went to church we wore a head covering to show that we were under submission to him. Not under submission to God under submission to him. My family and many people in our circles believe the Bible was absolutely literal and the god of the old testament is the same as the god of the New testament. I truly believe some of the people in our circled would be all for executing at least imprisoning homosexuals. I know some of
Them would give the death penalty to abortion doctors. They firmly believe women who have abortions should go to jail. I wasn't allowed to cut my hair or wear it all the way down. Wasn't allowed to wear makeup or jewelry. Birth control was extremely looked down upon as was getting your tubes tied.If you don't think the America is in danger of becoming a country like in the handmaid's tale you're kidding yourself. There are whole denominations considering of hundreds some times thousands of people willing and waiting for it to happen. I left 5 months ago after coming out as bisexual and not a Christian. This video is fantastic! Thought it was really interesting how you mentioned Gilead only works for a small group of men. That rings true today but most men who wouldn't call themselves feminists don't realise it. The oppression of women hurts men too. When we are seen as purely caregivers, men are excluded and have less rights to their children. When emotion is associated with femininity and femininity is coded as weakness, men cannot express their feelings or ask for help. That's why men commit suicide at a much higher rate than women, our society doesn't let them reach out and ask for help.

"Gilead only works for a small group of men" is a true statement; however, that is not the main message the producers of this movie intended to communicate. Their goal is clearly Liberal. They want women to revolt, just like they want Blacks to revolt in riots these BLM days. They clearly are anti-Conservatives and anti-Christian. They picture us in a very negative way (they'd try to cover this with some very quick statements and scenes in the movie to give them a future insurance against critism). They want women to be aware about protecting "their rights" (right to kill babies -- the message is implicit but clear) and is an indirect invitation to vote for the most Liberal politicians. If you are afraid about women "rights", you will vote Democrat. If you are afraid about violent riots and street destruction, you will vote Conservative. What is your biggest fear? They'll try to make a desicion for you through fear.

Maybe also because they can't get the help, let alone from women. Especially if the women is more concerned with playing the victim as is so often the case. Men aren't going to compete to be viewed as the victim in a society that no longer has clear roles for men and women. Expecting equal but never achieving. Men are expected to role with the changes and keep our mouth shut or be labelled as chauvinists.

It is common for a man to leave the wife post childbirth and upgrade to a "better/younger" mate, and at times the cycle repeats. It tosses women en masse to self esteem issues about their bodies. In this tale, the wife is kept physically unscathed and leaves the physical dirty work to the servants. It actually instills what has gone on for as long as we all know. I'll sow my seed of legacy, and drop you like a hot potato when you're not "youthful". This "tale" backs up the claim of men just wanting an unscathed wife, and a vessel for them to use like a urinal so they get the best of both worlds without needing permission. I hate that I witness it on the regular and hate more that I recognize it for what it is. We are only for "use" as seen fit. More disturbing is hearing men chatter amongst themselves supporting human female slavery.

She bought it for me when I was 17 but she didn't feel comfortable letting me buy it and read it back then because even the little bit I read in the store really upset me. Even when you look at theocratic cult societies like the Mormon FLDS many men and young boys are just used for hard labour and are not fed or taken care of properly because only a few men can have all the power and "own" all the women and then little girls and women end up being raped and abused because they are not valued as human beings. Feminism is not only not needed, but it's detrimental to society because political movements only serve to pit us against each other and make us tribalistic. What we need is to not attach words to sets of beliefs. If you really cared about equality, you wouldn't be so attached to an inherently collectivist movement. It has done good things in the past, but it accomplished its goals, women are equal in the eyes of the law and so feminism needs to die. But it isn't going to because the nature of such movements isn't to help society first and foremost, but to survive.
Are there bad things still happening to women? Yeah, and there always will be. Bad things happen to men too. But the only way forward is through a focus on logic and freedom in our society, and that can't be accomplished through left wing economic thought *or* right wing social views.

So you want to talk equality?
      I give you equality.
The job market is already competitive as it is.
For men to make money they need to put in their blood, sweat, and tears.
While women are able to make huge profits from the sex market not needing to do any of the above.
Either that be traditionally prostitution or being dancers. But more common now is only-fans, Instagram, tik-tok, and other social media.
Women have hundreds of avenues to make a profit in the hundreds of thousands of dollars at a very young age. While the average man at the same age would just get by working minimum wage jobs or make a little better pay through backbreaking manual labor. That is why more workplace deaths are men, and why men work more hazardous jobs. We need to struggle to make a living.
Or the other option which are illegal but offer jobs where you don’t need to break your back, but only risk your entire future. Why do you think men are drawn into criminal work? Selling drugs etc? Drawback is more men are in the prison system then women.
Again, because for men to make money we need more then just our looks.
Men are inherently born with no value in comparison to women. Men have to create value in life, while women can just be.
Women have the option to exploit their bodies and make a net worth of millions by the time they are 25 off of the sexual market. Why this is to begin with? For women to make this much money from men online is because there is a direct imbalance in the sex market.
But to you, it is empowering to make profit off of exploiting men?
The average man is having less sex then ever before. This again is from statistics.
Due to the introduction of online dating, a woman can get option from hundreds of men. From which they only choose the 1 or 2% of the best which she’d label ‘attractive’.
But tell me how many men can fit the modern woman’s expectations from a man?
Such as having a six figure salary?
All women look for something that is better, they believe they deserve the cream of the top.
Do men think the same? No.
Why is it that men are perfectly fine with dating a mcdonalds worker, and women are not?
Why it is that every woman if not look for money from a man, look for ambition and goals?
Is it the same with men? No.
You want to discuss equality as if we are the same. But the reality is we are different. You only want the benefits of being a man but not the drawbacks. You don’t want the manual labour jobs but the jobs in the managerial positions. You don’t want to die with men in the frontlines as soldiers but sit back and complain about patriarchy.
Men are distilled not to complain about our problems but only listen to yours. But it is statistically proven that an average man’s life is far harder then a woman’s life can ever be.
You do not share our difficulties in life, and you have zero empathy for any difficulties men have. And you expect modern men to give you any empathy in return?

Everyone around the world who would watch this video would also be familiar with where my country seems to be headed in 2022. The truth now, I think, is that women, LGBTA folks, people of color, those in poverty and many independent thinkers can understand the symbolism here; and the in depth explanation is appreciated. But it is also is frightening how I am almost afraid to watch the series again, because it feels less symbolic than ever now. Similar to what they say about history, life may not exactly repeat what is depicted in art, but it often rhymes with what art has foretold.
Despite my trepidation, I believe it is important for all of us (in the US) who care about equality to watch this series , even if you have already watched it. Everything here has changed; there are far too many, decent, good, people, unknowingly, allowing themselves to boil just like the frog Offred compares society to in one of the episodes; when the heat is raised slowly, we, like the frogs, don't know they are being boiled to death until it is too late

The Handmaid's Tale is about fascism. Atwood believed that wherever fascism arose, it was shrouded under-not caused by-a cultural or religious identity. In America, this means that fascism would exist under the face of Christianity. That doesn't mean that it's a cautionary tale about Christianity or Islam and that doesn't mean it isn't-just that, at it's heart, it's not really about the religion itself.

The message of Christianity is freedom and love for the least of these. Mark 12:31 says, "Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no command greater than this."

Here it is 4 years since this article by the take, and we are about to lose bodily autonomy due to the impending SCOTUS decision. While it's true that this is because of religious intolerance, the main reason appears to be that fewer women are having children, particularly white women.

One of the biggest parallels I've noticed between this show and present society is how similar the treatment of handmaids is to the treatment of dairy cows in factory farms. Both are valued solely for what their reproductive function. Both are raped until they conceive, and once they give birth, the child/calf is taken away. Then both are forced to pump milk, until they can't anymore, and then the cycle starts over again and they are raped again. When they can't give anymore, they are sentenced to death (sent to the colonies or butchers). It's such a strong parallel that it surprises me that nobody mentions it, sadly, it's probably because many people don't know what really happens to dairy cows. In fact, I don't know if Margaret Atwood even intended for this parallel, but if she did, it's definitely one of the most effective and subtle arguments against animal agriculture I've ever seen, as many people who aren't vegan would still want to watch this show or read the book.

That's what stood out to me so clearly. And not just dairy cows, but the meat/dairy/egg industries altogether. The way we treat other beings on the planet, in general. As though their only value is in what they can do for us. I watched it wishing deeply that other people would notice, however uncomfortably, that parallel. 😔

Well, I take it that you have never been around a bovine pair really enjoying themselves. Let me tell you, they REALLY do. Rape? Are you for real? The Egyptians had their goddess of love, Hathor represented by a cow. After knowing many of them, this is utterly logical. I have even seen an exhausted bull trying to sneak off from his overly amorous sweetie only to get ganged up on by the rest of the ladies. Oh, the poor boy later went to hide in some dense brush just to get some respite. He snuck out at least a day later on the other side of the creek all calm and collected, but the girls were on the other side, VERY frustrated. Yes, they very much enjoy sex. I rather wonder if you know that you can?

Same sex attracted men, men who had been in prior relationships, racial minorities etc.)

Patriarchial chauvinism benefits always only few men. It is about force: Kick, most succesfully, the arses of other men and humiliate women. Then you are king and can do what you want. It is all about the man who rules, steping on others. Only in equality it is possible, -not only for women but also for men, to live a full live where everybody is able to use his/her full values and capeabilities. And that is the reason why islamic coutries are incapeable to survive without the west. For men it is enough to be born with a penis to be adored in the family, they don't need to be good in something. Between men it is only important in wich family they were born into, a ruleing one ( the arsekickers) or an obaying one. And women are not allowed to be good in anything because then they would be better then men, and that is surely bad, right? At the end nothing goes on in patriarchial societies...And so they depend on the developments of the civilised part of the world, where men and women are equal.

When watching The Handmaid's Tale, I mostly think about _HOW_ this - all of it - was allowed to happen. The action that was taken was too little, & too late. I wonder if men like Nick & Luke (the regular men) were on-board at the beginning, until it was too late, and *their* lives/livelihood was threatened as well, making it too late for them to stop the ball from rolling downhill as it gathered speed/momentum. Excellent review, as always. 😊❤️

This video should have millions of views. It really helps to explain the importance and the imagery used in this series and book. When I told a friend about this show her response was “oh well now we know what the left is afraid of,” implying that a sinister leftist part of the population were afraid of so called “God fearing people.” But the importance of this story is not to emphasize the dangers of religion, but of how an oligarchy will use any means necessary to achieve power. It is in no way an attack on religion, but a mirror to the dangers we face in current day society. Thank you thank you thank you for making this video.

The pressure to find a husband inside the cult and start breeding is hard to describe. Pure evil. And this happened to me in Africa. Before you think that maybe my culture mixed itself with the religion, the African country in question is SCARCELY populated with just over 2 million people. There are more cattle than people and this serves us well. We do not breed for the government. We breed for our families and ensure whether the situation is right for breeding. Not so AMERICANS. They still run slave breeding farms it would appear.

I would like to add something about 'our society'. I think Atwood and the series mean the US society, especially. I feel that the US, with its outspoken Christian culture, as a country, will slide down when things fall apart. You can see this happening right now. It's not a far fetched idea, that a nation like the US, can slip away into military and religious dictatorship. Like Iran.

I like this series, as I like dystopia generally. But this Gilead situation wouldn't last long, probably because of dissent from the inside. I don't mean mass civil outrage, but minor indiscretions like wearing slightly the wrong colour of clothes or repeating the usual daily mantras and the police/army having reluctance to deal with petty misdemeanors. Why reluctance? Because the Gilead system benefits too few people, at least in muslim countries, most men benefit. I'd give it 2 years max and the system would start disintegrating.

Literally Afghanistan right now, sans the separation of the wives and the handmaids, they are one for a while, untill the family have girls, then they would become the Brown coated woman. In third world country, women will never a person and always an object- its messed up and wrong, sometimes a precious object, so precious you have to lock them so it's save. It is more the patriarchy than the religion, but they use religion like misile to abuse women. Just like Gilead only a group of men have the positive impact, the rest was also exploited. Hence, if they wanna be put on heaven they need to obey.
Why you bother make the world you live in hell, if you just want heaven?
Make this world heaven. If that's too much, just be kind and don't step on others line.
P.S. some of their potrayal of heaven is so fucked up, it doesn't feel heavenly at all.
