    Her movies are filled with SO many emotions, I think, for women they experience the most emotions when watching her movies. First movie I watched from her was a CLASSIC The virgin suicides I just remember it was like 5 AM in the morning the sun was just coming up so my room was super dazy and I could hear the crickets outside (If you've watched the movie then you know that exact feeling I'm talking about- of daziness) and I just remember crying my eyes out but also feeling so content. Her movies really know how to hit and if you guys can't see that, then I'm sorry you are really missing out on true talent and art. AND HER SOUNDTRACKS ARE ALWAYS BANGERS.

    And another thing - the characters in her movies to me always feel like they're trapped in metaphorical cages. Whether it be staring out of a window in a car, or sitting alone lost in thought in a soulless hotel room. They feeling I get from a Sofia Coppola film is akin to the alienation and loneliness I experience in the characters in an Edward Hopper painting; who's souls are like caged hens trapped inside their own corrupted bodies, prisoners to the drum beat of time from birth to death.

      I think at t time I was lumping both their movies together and I was thinking that Godfathers I, II & III, Apocolyps Now, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas and Casino were all done by one Italian American director and I was calling him Martin Scorsese. Coppell said they were often confused due to them being both Italian.

Every time as I grow up and re watch it, it kind of makes me aware of growing up and how far I’ve come and how far I have to go. The music and the costumes are all needed in the actual plot. It’s a scenery ambiance movie, not a movie to heard a script. She does a wonderful job of show not tell!!!

    You know it's a Sofia Coppola film
    if some of the men argue that it was pretty but dull, filled with too much pointless emotion, and not as deep as everyone lauds it to be,
    if some of the women reply that they not having the insight to understand why the movie is that way nor the ability to see its worth is the very message that the film tries to send,
    and if the rest of the audience just stays quiet, mind filled with thoughts that do not seem to be interested in condensing into words, and suddendly, without taking notice, they've started walking towards no concrete place, all while wishing they could just lay down with their eyes closed for a while. Just a little while.

  • @EtherealBlueRainbow

    Lost in translation is the only movie of hers I've seen & it spoke to me in a way movies rarely do, not only because of my fascination for the Japanese culture & it's contradictions, but mostly because of the theme itself. I was a multicultural little girl once, born of parents from different cultures, countries, who grew up in a country not my own & studying in a French international school filled with different nationalities, yet other cultures added to the mix. When the film came out, I was an 18 year old who had just moved the autumn before to France to go to Uni, & while I understood the French culture quite well, I was also not French. All my life, I've felt this acute disconnect between languages, cultures, people, places, the loss of meaning in translation, the perspective of the outsider looking in, the one who understands but can't be part of even their own native culture, never mind the adopted one of where you live. The loss of meaning & purpose in your own life, the barriers between you & the people close to you... So many layers of distance which sometimes makes a person a spectator of their own life & of the world around them... Every time the feeling of disconnect comes to my mind, regardless of its origins, the expression & the movie are there to illustrate it: "Lost in translation"... Lost in direction, in expression, in understanding...
    That's why when I first heard the dismissive criticism, it bewildered me, in a hit puppy kind of way, who truly didn't understand why. "A woman", "daughter of", the criticism of the theme itself or the composition, when they hit such perfect notes to me. Criticism which seems to have followed throughout her carrier. Is it so wrong to bring a woman's perspective, to use pastel tones or a non epic condemn & save the world perspective, to not speak of the entire world's issues for once, to speak more softly, but with meaning? There is room for more than one voice in the world, in cinema. & somehow, the voices which are rarely heard are those who speak to me the most.

    I wish you all did this video now, in the present day,, because I'm sure today you would have touched on her lack of diversity and her fear of having any poc characters. This was a good video, but it would have been so much better if the lack of representation and the clear and abundant privilege that her movies and characters exemplify would have been explored. I'm rather confused on how these things could not be brought up, but since this video is several years old, I won't hold it against you.

      I like what you're saying. I think Sophia doesn't have POC in her movies she's writing what she's personally grown up with. She had a very privileged childhood and I don't exactly see her making a movie about a character who's disfranchised. I don't hold that against her though since no one can force her to have a character in her movies who isn't white.

      Why is she obligated to include POC? If, say, a black director cast nothing but black actors in his or her films, would you say that black director is obligated to include more racial diversity in them? There isn't exactly a lack of representation of POC in the film and television, so why is this needed in a Sofia Coppola film?

      @@selena9203 I wasn't "worked up", as you chose to label my response. In fact, I could continue to make a strong argument against your own 'people of color' comment too, in that, all persons have a skin tone, and very few have an absolute lack of melanin or the absence of any 'color'. It was a divisive comment, from someone looking to foment negativity between people by pointing out differences. I could give a care about who Ms. Coopola does or does not include in her films. She is obligated to include no particular ethnicity in her films, if her films don't appeal, don't watch them ( I have only seen a couple and am not her biggest fan, and it certainly has nothing to do with, "poc representation".) . The point I was making was that always looking for how you are being slighted, or new ways you can take offense or find fault, is the mark of someone that is bitter and has a chip on their shoulder. And that, political correctness needs to be tempered with enough intelligence to at least understand basic terminology (meanings of words). So no, her criticism really wasn't a valid criticism either, in that no film maker is obligated to include anybody in their films in order to seem inclusive or to give any particular group representation. That's childish rainbows and unicorn thinking. That's it.

I literally recorded the song I think called fools rush in on my phone so could listen to it lol also being able to use the Versailles palace and she got to talk to different historians so that she was more accurate in the film I think the only thing that was wrong with it was the dialog lol that wasn't her fault! All of her movies ... certain scenes helps you to sometimes even hear the loneliness or dread within yourself. I remember there were a lot of scenes where I could feel what the characters were feeling simply because of the lights the shot and no words lol I hsd no idea that she made Virgin suicides but it makes sense because it gave me the same haunting lingering feeling of what if..and sorrow but in an artistic way...

    I think Sophia is a great film maker . I've seen 3 of her films and I found them to be a feast for the eyes. The way she frames the scenes with colors and textures , very nice and the clothes are incredible. Her films are bright and cheerful . Anytime I see one of her films I know I'm in for a photographic treat , where the plot isn't hard to follow because she focuses on the human element .
    I wish her every success in the future. And I can't believe they boo ed her at cannes . She wasn't the only one that ever did a period /present film. Maybe because they were French , and ok I get it , but she didn't make her into a bathory type character.
    Marie was a product of her time and station . Dunst played her with the innocence of a child so I felt bad they had to die. And I feel bad she got that kind of response , art is open for response and discussion but never open for public abuse. It was art , it wasn't a bad historical account meant to hurt people , get over yourself canne.

    This video was rather disappointing. As a woman I can relate to many of the feminine/feminist issues presented by Coppola in her films and as a film lover I can relish in her intimate stories and gorgeous aesthetics and visual choices she makes in framing etc. However, as a black woman her movies at times can be ironically alienating and I think to make this video without once mentioning the SUBSTANTIAL & VALID criticism against her when it comes to her intentional lack of black women/woc is incredible. Especially the Beguiled when asked about her removing an important black character she said something to the tune of, she wanted to focus on the gender aspect and not racial, as if black women don't exist.... for that reason alone in my eyes she can never be championed as some sort of breakthrough for all women when she excludes woc from her film conversations. I knew this video was going to take the route that it did when it didn't mention '"white" when describing her film elements in the first few minutes.

The black character in Beguild is a really important figure so why did she overlook it, for what purpose? Look, I love Sofia and her films but I think these criticisms are warranted and I wish she took it into account rather than shrug it off. Maybe a bit of self-awareness would've helped her. I think she's an underrated director who can only tell emotional stories from her own experiences. Therefore, in an attempt to talk about something she is not expert on or is not passionate about (e.g.strucutural racism, class inequality), I can see why she would shy from it to avoid sounding out of depth. Never the less, Ivey's comment still stands to be a perfectly reasonable response to the decisions she makes on behalf of her audience.

    There are movies from the male perspective, and there are movies from the female perspective. Movies are a form of expression of one's own vision of the world and it's understandable why female directors make different styles of movies and have different emotion behind them as men and women experience the world differently. And every viewpoint should be taken into consideration. No movie is good just for this fact, however, it has to stand on it's own merits, but you have to give the personal stories about the human experience some respect for delving into the human psyche the way they do. We need to stop seeing movies and other forms of expression so negatively when they aren't what we perceive the world to be. It's just another perspective. Whether a female sees a statement a man makes as misogynistic and male-centric or a male sees an expression from a woman who only thinks from the female perspective and something misandric comes from their mind, It might not be as damaging or idiotic, but just another perspective. People are so caught up in their own little worlds that the experiences of others whether male/female or black/white or protestant/muslim, all these people are just someone whith a different opinion and that's ok. It's just someone else's point of view. You either take it into consideration, or move on with your life. There's no point in raging and fighting against it.

    when you've only ever experienced life in the upper echelons you cant know what is to be part of the other 99%, you said it yourselves, she has the freedom to make the films she wants, films cost serious change, freedom means money. why do you think shes never had people of color or poor people in her films, they wouldn't fit her aesthetic i believe anyway because beautiful fashion and cityscapes wouldn't be believable if you weren't a well off character.

      david zar no one should cast people of colour for the sake of it. That will make the entire setup too phony and that also means one is not honest with their work.
      She's a champagne socialist, just like her dad, but let me tell you this, if you don't think that she doesn't make movies about the "other 99%" you're wrong. Just go watch "lost in translation", the film is a poignant critique of capitalism.

      Rose she's privileged in the sense that she's a Hollywood insider , because of her father's presence.
      That doesn't mean she can't stand on her own, her movie especially "lost in translation" is one of the most original films,made by women director, to come out of Hollywood in recent times(she won an Oscar). She's actually far better than her peers and in my opinion one of the best female movie director after Kathryn Bigelow, far better than Ava duvalary (grossly overrated ). I know female, people of colour, minorities representations are the norms of the day but she was the trend setter ,she did it before it is vogue. I have seen her movies, it's very delicate and sensitive and very feminine in its approach to the subject. Lost in translation , doesn't misrepresents Japanese people or its culture nor does it cold shoulders their sensitivity. You have to look into the context in which the film's is made ,the film's is narrated from the view point of its protagonist, who's lost in a foreign land ,far away from his/her homeland and no one to relate to their inner problems.
      As for popularity goes,well marvel movies are tremendous hits ,that doesn't mean those movies are better than her's. She's not pretentious, that's the most important part, she's real and true to herself and is dedicated in her professional life. That's why I respect about her. Their's lot of bullshit, about lack of diversity in her work,which is baseless and false,most of her subjects are historical in nature. As I said before you can't pegionhole your agenda into something that doesn't fits. One can't show people of colour in medival France or as arich southern belle etc.
      The pace of her movies are determined by her subject matter,not on industrial calculations. She's made a name for herself telling sensitive personal stories,not making Hollywood blockbuster's or race baiting propaganda.

    • @sirlordhenrymortimer6620
      @sirlordhenrymortimer6620 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Rose to be precise, she's one of the top women director. She represents the very best the field has to offer . We all have certain preferences ,which I respect but one shouldn't lowball others .
      You, with all due respect , have very skewed sense about films. One can't judge a movie based on its popularity. Justin Bieber has far more likes and views in the net compared to Mozart ,does that make him better than Mozart???. Barton fink was a flop by commercial standards but it won palm'd or. Now, should I say that movie is rubbish. Cinema in it's true form is nothing but art -the financial part of it is just added baggege. I guess we all have our choices but 100 years from now I don't think people will remember the typical Hollywood potboilers but classics that changed the landscape of cinema.
      As, for coppala yeah she has her own style and her own way of perticularly doing things , in this case showcasing the lives of "rich white people", but she made very poignant critique about their lifestyle and culture as well. As I said before the greatest thing I like about her is that she's not pretentious,unlike some of the other women directors like Ava duvary or propagandist who trumpets her own works.

    • @sirlordhenrymortimer6620
      @sirlordhenrymortimer6620 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rose to certain extent I agree with your points.
      It will take a while for women director to be of Spielberg's level ,George Lucas, or Cameron and that not even scratching the surface of legendary directors like Kubrick, scorcesse, coppala(her father), Kurosawa,Hitchcock, Einstein etc
      I have a theory that good movies ,irrespective of their box office success or will stand the test of time because time acts as a great filter for arts.
      If you really want to know about a women director who has been exceptionally influencial in the history of modern cinema than that is MAYA DERN.
      If you set the bar so high, which I am not complaining, than rearly any women would make it to THAT top. Check out the list of women directors like Kathryn Bigelow, Sophia coppala,Agnes Verde their filmography is just not on par with speulberg, Lucas or else.
      Sophia ford Coppola has unique narrative style, which sometimes gets over stylised and overgroomed . Only time will tell how successful she would be and how great she really is.
      But I reject this notion that one has to have universal appeal to get into the pantheon of greatness . Avengers earned at least 200 times the money that film like no country for old man grossed, but theirs no comparison between the quality of the two films. "No country....." will be remembered for a long time while I can't say the same thing about the avengers movie.
      Great films don't have to art films but they don't have to be high grossing potboilers either.
      After all cinema in it's raw form is nothing but art.

    • @sirlordhenrymortimer6620
      @sirlordhenrymortimer6620 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rose thanks, we atleast can find some common grounds .
      Francis ford Coppola is truly legendary.
      If you like jk Rowling than you would definitely like someone like Hillary mantel she's magician , slightly old fashioned but very classical. She won man booker award as well.
      If you like Lucas so much, and as you are Asian,than you should also know about Kurosawa. The man who's directly responsible for the starwars.
      As, for top women directors Agnes Verde, Bigalow, karyn kusuma and Jennifer why Nielson(both Asian women) are truly great and in my opinion has better body of work than Mira niar .
      Mass appeal is not everything after all how many people prefer jazz now these days over other musical forms . That doesn't diminish jazz's brilliance ,even one bit.
