At it's core Big Little Lies is a show about parenting - it looks at how our parents shape (or deform!) us and we in turn shape our children.
Watch to see an exploration of the deeper meaning of the show's credits, an overview of the Monterey mom's parenting styles and why mothers, especially, owe themselves the same compassion they give their children.

Big Little Lies is one of my favourite shows and this video essay is splendid. I found your channel through The Take's video on Asexuality. After watching and liking three of your videos, I knew I had to subscribe. Looking forward to more of your movie/show analyses 💗

LOVE THIS!!!! I came from your Doja Cat video on the take - also excellent, by the way - and I see you're covering a lot of things that I like so I'm subscribing :) And I prefer the first season, mostly because I was not pleased about what happened behind the scenes of season 2

I feel like I like this channel too much, when in desperation I watch a mediocre video about a show I've never seen.... Anyway, the stuff you've made in the last like 2 years has been amazing

Huge necropost, but I find it incredibly ominous the difference in the fates of children when it comes to this area specifically. Im from the Monterey County (obv not disclosing where) and come from a Latin-American household. What we typically learned in terms of actions was to work ourselves half to death in the name of something incredibly idealized which is higher education. Higher Education which in comparison to those that live in Monterey (at least in this portrayal) they have an abundance of. So much so that the problems with their respective family units seem to be based less around just the huge task of making to the end of the week with enough money to buy another weeks groceries and more about they're own personal issues as individuals. Luxuries of middle class life I guess.

What I like about this channel is that she offers insightful commentary without the obvious virtue signaling that The Take does. She doesn't pander to what she thinks a mainstream audience wants to hear, creating divisions. This has the potential to be a good cult hit channel.

Thank you for this amazing analysis, it was a joy to watch! I take it you're a developing channel rn and I hope it will attract more subscribers, so just one little thing - mb, rethink the way you deliver a text a little? To make it more.. methodical? Not sure if that's the right word, but I'm talking about intonation and pauses
    But nevertheless, it was great!

OK 74 year male here, seen a lot, done a lot of parenting. I have very big issues, based on real life, how psychologists blame parents for children's issues. This will probably set me up as flame bait, but I have three children, two biological, one adopted. My own two children are not well adjusted, one is over anxious, one is driven and depressive. Both though are fully productive members of civil society, with no history of criminal behaviour. The anxiety seems to be a family trait, both my wife and myself are over anxious, but not deablilatingly so, which is also true for our children.
My adopted daughter, is border line psychotic. Her anxiety and depression are sometimes completely deabitating. She skirts the law, and continually interacts with law breakers, frequently involving us to rescue her. She has three nice kids with different fathers, who were all abusive. Her child minding is haphazard, but mostly loving, and the only abuse is verbal, and does not usually dominate.
Now the interesting part. According to all the psychologists we have worked with over thirty years, we are to blame for her problems, which were caused by trauma, that we inflicted apon her.
Well I do not agree. I think it is mostly BS. I think it is an easy out for the psychologists to blame the parents, that way the vagaries of DNA and eugenics never have to be mentioned.
And, as noted in this movie, the Mother is the main culprit and is hounded by the masses.
