I had never before seen such a sombre, non-exploitative yet poignant depiction of male-on-female sexual assault by a male director before. I really applaud Jean-Marc Vallée and his tastefulness and understanding of female trauma, and the editing is such a big part of it
what an absolutely fantastic observation of the editing. it always struck out to me as being special but i couldn't say why and you perfectly pointed it out. well done.
When I fist saw the show with my mom I was thinking of the editing and storytelling and I was amazed, I'm a "new" filmmaker and this show was kinda an inspiration for me and you helped me understand the editing even more so thank you.
I never thought about the POV switch in Celeste's thought flashbacks, thanks for bringing this to my attention. Weirdly enough I've made a video on Editing & Empathy in Big Little Lies and somehow we both mention 2001: A Space Odyssey and we both end our videos with the same shot - I guess we know what's good :)
I've been watching the DVD EVERY DAY & counting! I'd no idea that such perfection in movie-making still existed! Love the performances, the witty script, the direction & editing, the wonderful 'found ' soundtrack, just everything done with such style.....no wonder Meryl Streep is coming on board!
Can’t believe this doesn’t have more views, this was a great video on the power of editing and of the show! Definitely going to watch more of your stuff now 😊
amazing video. makes me want to rewatch it again, it's beautifully shot but i couldnt put my finger on why. also, great skills! wish i had your talent when i write my english essays lol
Thank you! It's definitely got an amazing feeling that makes you feel like you've always been in elite Monterray even though we (me at least) never have been
Thank you so much for breaking the editing into insightful pieces! While watching the series I was wondering about the editing style! It's amazing 😍 Keep going with your good work!
Just discovered this channel and this is my second video and I just want to say thank you and congrats. Your insight is really on spot while not being pretentious at all. Will definitely recommend you to people. Love it!
Great video. Editing might be the most important part of movies or this mini series. I was convinced of this when I saw a video how editing saved star wars. It's hard to know what scene to leave in & where to cut. The editor should let the actors & scenes lead them as opposed to the editing dictate the story.
i hope that the editing don't change in season 2 with the new director. Jean-Marc always has this distinctive perspective and use of resources that built the power of the show
Absolutely no clue how I'm just now seeing this, but 🖕YT algorithm for allowing me to miss this 3 fckng years ago! This analysis is just *chef's kiss*!!
Great job! Editing can make or break a movie. Star wars they say was saved in the editing room before it was edited all Lucas big director friends thought it was not good. I would def say the ocean is the supporting character in the show. Amazing when everytime perry hits someone at the end it flashed to the ocean , I didnt even realize when bonnie pushed him ending the violence the ocean washed over it. Brilliant observation. I'm sure our brains subconsciously noticed it . Amazing and what a great job the director and editor did. I still cant get over that jane and celeste children are brothers. Interesting that one son raised by perry is the bully while his other son is gentle and took the blame . Like when perry is talking about how he doesnt want his boys near the other boy bc hes violent hes talking without knowing it that hes speaking of his son. Crazy. That's why with a season 2 out I'm curious what perry would have done about Ziggy. We know jane didnt report the rape as she never told anyone so I wonder if Perry as the therapist said would go after custody of his sons bc of ego would have done the same with Ziggy. That would have been very interesting. Season 2 really revolved around perry esp at the end since he caused 2 of the leads so much pain. I wish Perry didnt die since they made the second season. It would have been crazy to see how the rape revealed would have affected everyone. It kind of made celeste life simple she didbt have to move with her boys or fight perry with an ugly divorce and custody and celeste could have had Jane help back her up that he was her rapist which would have been a tough call as it would have been part of the public records and Ziggy would find out at some point his dad rated his mom.
How do you get better at noticing these film techniques? I’m trying to get better at analyzing film and tv as I want to become a filmmaker some days but I feel like I miss so much.

The editing is my biggest concern about the director change in season two.

This makes me so happy, it's the same way I got into watching and now making them. Best edited show I've seen this year for sure

Great video. This series was really one of the best of the last year for me.
I really didn't expect to like it but damn, it is a beautiful show
Thank you for the excellent video! I find myself wanting to rewatch the series now even though I finished it only a week ago.
It's cool, I've watched the fourth episode probably about 6 times by now
I've been watching the DVD EVERY DAY & counting! I'd no idea that such perfection in movie-making still existed!

Another reason why this is one of my favourite shows ever. Jean-Marc Vallée is an incredible director and the editor did an amazing job.
"The English Patient" has some creative ways to go from one scene to another, using similar patterns of sound or image.

I watched many art of editing videos and urs is by far the most succinct and sober - learned a lot - thanks!
How the use the ocean to symbolism each scene is so great. Great actors to.
3:00 - 4:13
Similar energy of characters shifts to next scene steady!
This video is infested with eloquence and aesthetics! Just subscribed to you!

i always noticed the editing but i couldn’t explain why
i hope that the editing don't change in season 2 with the new director. Jean-Marc always has this distinctive perspective and use of resources that built the power of the show

Love your voice!
Can we get Jean-Marc Vallee to do an IT television series on Amazon Prime or Netflix? Please and thank you.
