Unexpected Lake Superior Agate Hunting

- I left early for work on the 23rd and was taking a shortcut and this area was grown over with weeds and infested with wood ticks a month and a half ago, and to my surprise it was all dug up and ready for hunting agates. So instead of starting work early and was actually a half hour late, but it was worth it.
The first two are 3 ouncers, the 3rd is 7 oz painted eye agate, also what I consider my best find of 2014 so far. and the others at the end were found the past week, around 4 oz each.
I love it! I am sitting in Minneapolis airport right now watching this aftrr a week in the UP. A family member is moving up there and I couldnt be more excited to start looking around for these. Thanks for the great video.

He’s in Minnesota from the looks of it. The Minnesota side of Lake Superior has more iron ore and the agates at red. We get more other colors on the Michigan side. Like white, purple and blues. Red is more mixed. He is picking solid reds. Awesome Red Agates he is picking. I see he did find one more white. Not quite the pure white “Sugar Agates” that I’ve found in Michigan. Those are some awesome finds though. Great job.

that's really neat!!! use to go to agate beach in Cali several times as child. I think I have a smaller gray chunk but very similar to yours.. may need to check again and might be. if so I guess should really keep eye open in just driveway. have a few older rings.. agates not glamorous necessarily best but they got their specialty to them.

WOW some amazing finds there - I have always had a super fondness for agate, but now that I'm not in Africa anymore, I don't think you get it here in the UK, where I have done a fair bit of rock-hounding

All agates found in the Midwest come from Superior - the result of the last ice age. From MN to Iowa and all states in that region. The red agates found on shore are highly sought after and I've seen a lot of these come from inland areas of the Northshore of Superior. Agates that are exposed, or have the outer rock removed that come from the waters/shores of Lake Superior often turn a brownish "caramel" color. This is due to the amount of iron in the area. Learn to identify an agate that doesn't have the "polished" stone revealed. A great hobby that leaves you so relaxed. The concentration it takes to properly look for them makes you forget about the cares and concerns of the world.
Think Civil Wrong there are Agates from Dakotas to Montana strewn all over the Midwest not just lake Superior type which is a name not a actual specific location.

Notice the questions about location never get answered?? That's for a reason! If I found an area like that producing good agates the last thing you do is let the whole world come and look! I would be so excited if I could find pieces like that!

Like fishermen, pickers will keep their best spots secret! I am just learning myself, I had luck on a gravel road and no luck on beaches or county gravel pits, go figure! I only wish I could find agates like these. Maybe someday.

I live in lower Michigan and I took a vacation in the upper peninsula and I went to lake Huron and found a nice little agate, any beach with rocks will be fine, and if it's worth the travel, go to Petoskey, that beach has agates!!

The one at the end, where our like like a triangle inside. I found a dark jasper rock and the middle was bumble bee yellow then black in the middle. An elderly woman told me it was called a witches eye. Anyone ever hear of this?

where can I find agates like those on lake superior in Minnesota, because every time I look I don't find anything!
Got to be patient, keep you eyes on the ground anywhere in Minnesota and you'll find something. Walk gravel pits/construction sites (with permission), beaches, and river banks. Anywhere the soil has eroded revealing gravel is a good spot. Best spots are hard to get to areas that keep traffic down to a minimum.

I live in the desert south of Roswell NM, and we have nothing like those.
If we did, I would be out 3 to 4 times a week. My finds are Pecos Valley Diamonds. Most of them are small to very small crystals. And NO, they were not left here by aliens as some people refer to them online. LOL 👽🇺🇸

Rivers and trees look as bland and lifeless like here in northeast Ohio by lake Erie
