I never get tired of these hunts. You guys really cleaned up on the agates that day. It’s crazy but all of the agates I have found in Lake Michigan I have never realized that they were agates until I got home and were just going through my finds.

Yes, I have cut a few and both Sam and I have tumbled them. They really stand out on the beach. The problem is that most of them have a layer that's softer than the rest of the rock. If you can find one without that mineral they tumble well.
19:00 - that's definitely an agate and a very nice one as far as our standards go in the UK! lol there was a few there you mentioned you weren't sure but not all Agate is banded you should take a flashlight and as long as light passes through and it's made of Chalcedony it would be classed as Agate! 😊 great finds! i envy the States when it comes to Rockhounding 😂
There are a lot of people who say that agates have to have bands. I'm not really in that camp since I think moss agates are still agates. But in the case of Lake Superior agates, I tend to think that they need to have bands.
You can see how the love of rock hunting starts in Michigan. You would probably be so bored with the rocks or lack of them on some of our east coast beaches... happy hunting!
I haven't hunted rocks on any ocean beach, so I don't know. I'd still love to walk some of those beaches to find out for myself if I'd like them or not.

I was drooling within the first few minutes of the video. Like a kid in the candy store. If you ever get to Australia try Darwin in the Northern Territory have pebble beaches.
Thanks as always for sharing your adventure and your finds! I’m curious if you tumble all of you agate finds, and if you keep the “m-agates” or leave behind? Also do you and Sam have a favorite region to hunt - Western UP, Eastern UP, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, etc?
I don't tumble any of my agates. I take some magates home, but not all of them. I'd say I tend to take them home though. As time goes on, I have been taking fewer and fewer home. If they are smoothish and look like they'll tumble, I bring them home. If they're agatey, but kind of ugly or rough, I leave them on the beach. One of these days, I need to go through all of my previous agate finds and pull out all the magates and tumble them. Sam and I have always gone to the eastern U.P. This year I asked if he wanted to go to the Keweenaw instead, but he wanted to go back to the same places we always go. He has never hunted rocks in the Keweenaw. Maybe next year, I'll insist that we go somewhere else. Sam and I live in Alpena, so Sam also hunts Lake Huron, but he and his girlfriend usually go without me.
Rob, you outdid yourself w/that agate. Very nice banding. You could hear poor Sam's disappointment wishing he had found that😅. Nevertheless, he pulled some nice specimens. Good hunt. Hello to Nancy.
Hello. Wally from Belleville Ontario Canada. Just bought a dual tumbler from Leegol Electric. It has some kind of nut shells to use. Should I use them in other stages or just throw it away?
I have used corn cob media to tumble Petoskey Stones, but in a vibratory tumbler. You could maybe use them for something like that down the road sometime. Check to see if they have grit in them already or if they're just plain nut shells. You wouldn't want to use them if they have grit in them. They're probably intended for polishing metal. A lot of people use tumblers to clean up brass shell casings before reloading them.
Making my first trip up this way in just under a week! This is inspirational to say the least! Hope to find something.... watching this I see am going to have to pack for all kinds of weather! Yikes
I was going to go there this spring, but chose to go to Little Girl's Point instead. I was originally going to camp at one place and hit both places in a day, but they weren't open for camping in early May.
That's interesting. I find that the agates in Minnesota are almost always orange or red but there is much more variety in the colors in the eastern U.P. Maybe all the red ones got picked up.
I like stripey rocks and I have a Rubicon too 😉😊 -- Calculating gas costs... buckets, boxes, and camping essentials... I like agates but I'm not an agate snob. I am serious! 😄
I go to Marquette quite a bit, but I don't do a lot of rock hunting there. The only beach I have hunted was just north of Picnic Rocks/Shiras Park, right in Marquette. Here's the video: th-cam.com/video/YNrhKHjalTo/w-d-xo.html
I've thought about doing that, but there's no cell service in this whole area. I could do it in a different part of the state though. I'm not sure if I could read messages and look at rocks at the same time. Maybe if Nancy came along and did the reading while I looked for rocks, it could work. I'll think about it.
Rob, another great video and rock hunt. You mentioned that you don’t tumble any of your agates. Do you polish them on your cab, or just leave them as is? I would imagine some of the small ones are tough to handle but above a certain size, may work fine. I bought some rough agates from Kingsley N and tumbled a couple to test and I think I would rather try to polish them on my cab if they are not too small. Thanks as always for the great video!
I just leave them as is. Actually, I'm starting to oil them with mineral oil. I really need to go through my small collection and remove the magates and display the nice agates somewhere.
@@MichiganRocks I checked out brimley state park and it's a sandy beach, then went East of the locks and it's a lot of crushed concrete. Not having much luck 😕

You both found some really beautiful agates! Some of the ones you thought were "magates" may be agates hiding in host rock. Great video!
Could be. I might tumble some of those to find out.
YEARS ago, most of the agates we found in the central/eastern U.P. were red. I used to really watch out for that color, the certain intensity.😊
That's interesting. I find that the agates in Minnesota are almost always orange or red but there is much more variety in the colors in the eastern U.P. Maybe all the red ones got picked up.
Great hunt! Sam’s the perfect buddy…not put off by iffy weather.
Yep, Sam was not raised to be a wimp. He's not afraid of a little discomfort.
What some cool rocks on that beach
I know where you went lol. You guys cleaned house! Great video.
This location wasn't supposed to be a secret. We took the Coast Guard Line Road.
@@Fly2308 I don't think the beach has a name. It's near the end of the Coast Guard Line Road.
@@MichiganRocks yep, i know it wasn't a secret, but pretty much only 1 road west of GM. Great spot
@@superscottorama This is east of Grand Marais.
LOVE to go on your adventures with You! SO hot here in California at the moment, looks chilly & lovely where you are! Enjoy! GO ROCK HOUNDS!
It's warmer here now. This was on June 14. It can be hot or cold on Lake Superior that time of the year.
@@MichiganRocks It's the same in my home state (Colorado) in the mountains. Still cool and snowy in June... Then HOT in July/August...
I like stripey rocks and I have a Rubicon too 😉😊 -- Calculating gas costs... buckets, boxes, and camping essentials... I like agates but I'm not an agate snob. I am serious! 😄
The Jeep is not very economical to drive. Probably something to do with it being shaped like a box, not very aerodynamic.
@@MichiganRocks that is true. Mine is green so it also attracts bugs, that think it’s a fresh new green leaf. 💚🧚🏻🫣😝😆
Hey Rob I am currently in Marquette, and I was wondering what are some good beaches for rocks?
I go to Marquette quite a bit, but I don't do a lot of rock hunting there. The only beach I have hunted was just north of Picnic Rocks/Shiras Park, right in Marquette. Here's the video: th-cam.com/video/YNrhKHjalTo/w-d-xo.html
Thank for the location we found a few agates and lots of magates
Oh Rob, that is a beautiful agate!
I thought so too. One of my best.
You found some really cool rocks!
Very nice ! i love ur videos
A lot of cool finds on this one. U should do one these live if theres service in the area, awesome vids though. Rock On
I've thought about doing that, but there's no cell service in this whole area.
We have greywacke here in NZ too, and glaciers....😂
Oh my heavens have you ever found so many agates in one trip ever before?? This is blowing my mind!
I think so. We've had other really good days too.
Excelente muy bonitos colores ágata 😮😮😮
Any recommendations for anywhere between white fish point and Sault Ste Marie? Great video! Thanks for taking us along!
Just about all the beaches between there are good.
@@MichiganRocks I checked out brimley state park and it's a sandy beach, then went East of the locks and it's a lot of crushed concrete. Not having much luck 😕
@@TMM716 I haven't hunted that far east much. I did like the Point Iroquois Lighthouse that is sort of in that area. I got swimmer's itch really bad there, though.
@@MichiganRocks I went there yesterday and found some good ones! We usually spend a month in the Keweenaw during the summer but decided to try the eastern U.P. This year, it's beautiful but Nothing beats the Keweenaw 😆
@@TMM716 I like the rock hunting better in the eastern U.P., but the scenery in the Keweenaw is much better.
