My experience is that beach agate hunting is best in the early spring after the winter storms have moved the maximum amount of sand off the beach, and of course at low tide. Also, hunt for agates when possible toward the sun, their translucence gives them away. Not sure if that is an agate or a piece of quartz? Put it in your pocket and if it is all dull when dry, it's quartz. A lot of beaches in Southern Oregon much have less carnelian and much more yellow and clear agate. Also, keep your eyes open for agates that are covered with a layer of white surface material that can look like snake skin. There also are more rare blue and black agates, and even pink ones. And lastly, this is the best tip: never turn your back to the waves.

yes I have usually found a good number after storms and in the winter and early spring. My family makes trips often to Ocean Shores and the Washington coast so I've had many opportunities to explore this beach during many different times of the year. This particular beach always presents agates at low tide whenever the rock beds are exposed. I've also found many good ones higher up in the rock beds even at high tide. This peninsula is just a great place to find them since so many are washed up on the beach as they are flushed out of the streams and rivers. Regarding the waves... I always go out in my old rubber boots. It allows me to wade out if need be to scoop up a good one. Thanks for the feedback!

Tim, those are nicer than we ordinarily get in Southern Oregon - I would love to find some big carnelian agates like those.

I have friends that go down to Yachats every March to beach comb. They usually find some nice sized yellow agates. They have found fist sized specimens a few times. Thats one place I'd like to visit.

I live right on the Oregon coast and after the winter storms I get my gathering tools and set out. Life time hobby. Especially love the red/orange, or occasionally found bands. Just be careful of the tides, do not turn your back and stay away from logs that can roll when sneaker waves can and do come in. Good information for the aspiring agate hunter. Thank you.

    I went rockhounding in September!
It was at a river, I managed to find green & red jasper, quartzite + yellow quartzite and chalcedony that is almost a clouded pattern of blue and red.
My agate i found is very rough with many inclusions. Is there a specific name for that?

    • @timblair3004
      @timblair3004  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

regarding the roughness and inclusions. Would you be referring to it's surface pitting? Many of the agates I find on the beach have very interesting surface pitting. This texturing is the result of the host rock that formed the agate having been eroded away. So... what you see on the surface of your agate is the shape of the interior of the volcanic rock that acted like a mold to the silica that seeped into the cavity over many years. I actually love the pitting since it's the evidence of where the agate came from. The agate is so hard that it doesn't smooth out so easily as the other rocks you'll see in the river or on a beach. I've read in many rock hounding sources that the word "inclusions" refers to the color variations and shapes that appear within the chalcedony that were formed when chemical contaminations seeped into the silica slurry and then subsequently hardened with many beautiful formations.
Thanks for your input and enjoy the adventure of looking for these amazing gems! Tim Blair

At least two other commenters have provided updates for your video. One more certainly won't hurt; perhaps you would consider deletion, correction then reloading. IF YOU ARE A SELF-TAUGHT GEOLOGIST, YOU HAD A BAD TEACHER. It appears you've used "agate" to refer to all types of CHALCEDONY. Agate is ONLY the concentrically banded type of CHALCEDONY. I saw no banding of any kind on your CHALCEDONY finds. Judging only by color, it appears you found and displayed a variety of CHALCEDONY called CARNELIAN (or CORNELIAN sometimes). Even if erosion had removed the concentric banding, the gems you displayed STILL WOULD NOT BE AGATE. I became disappointed in your "training" and didn't even watch all the video. (You have joined a long list of other rockhounds who misidentify their finds based on localized or other incorrect petrological names. For example, a rockhound reported finding and doing lapidary work on "RIBBON STONE" She called it nothing else so unless you happen to live in her region, you'll never know what the stone was (is). I certainly don't know. Another example from near Ellensburg, WA: Local 'hounds and even college professionals there INCORRECTLY call a blue CHALCEDONY, sometimes with straight (non-concentric) bands, "ELLENSBURG BLUE AGATES." They are indeed lovely but they are not nor were they ever AGATES.) larryetaylor@hotmail.com

We're brand new to "rockhounding", and I was sure I'd found some agates on the beaches in Port Townsend among others like potentially jade, serpentine, jasper, maybe opal, and pretty sure my husband found stilpnomelane....we don't know how to find out what they are, pretty clueless about identifying.
After watching this, I'm not sure now.
The ones I thought were agates aren't as glass like translucent once they're rinsed and dried off, but if you hold them up to the light they're very translucent and some have cool stripes in them (banding).
Any ideas what these might be?
    Any ideas would be helpful
Thanks, great video, especially for newbies.

We skipped Damon Point entirely in favor of having a couple days to spend at some beaches further north. I’ve never seen such a variety of beautiful rocks in one place. We picked up probably around 50 agates just in our first hour today. We are headed back tomorrow to see what other treasures we can find. 😄 I will be disappointed to head back home to Georgia in a few days.

Do agates show up still? Like, many people hunt them. So wouldn't they be gone because people go very often?

I've been going out there for almost ten years and my finds do vary. If you try to go a few hours before low tide and give yourself lots to time to carefully look over the rock beds... you will find agates. They are naturally washed down from the hills and out into Grays Harbor. Damon Point acts like a big net catching the agates as they roll back and forth with the tide out in the harbor. Since the point sticks so far out into the mouth of the harbor it catches them little by little over the years gathering in the gems. So, I expect the supply to remain the same over the years. Just keep looking and your jars will fill up!
