    Why don't they make the pre-order an *actual* pre-order. Take all the orders and then they know how many to make for their customers and then scalpers will still get some but the market will be softer. That plus a projected run for retailers and they should be good.

      the thing is GW and the scalpers take advantage of the same thing: artificial scarcity gw wants to make "limited edition" things because it sells for more and because its LIMITED people are more eager to buy it because afterall this is your one and only chance, scalpers take advantage of the same thing except they dont buy them as memorabilia but to further profit of it because its limited people who didnt get to buy it from gw officially (because of the scalpers) are willing to buy from the scalpers for a higher price

      @@DiscourseMinis GW LOVES scalpers, because scalpers means that 100% of product is SOLD, out of their warehouses, and on the SCALPER to recover their wholesale investment. If they don't sell from the scalper, why should GW care? GW will already have their $$ on the balance sheet for the shareholders report. Win/Win for the GW bottom line!
      This latest move in a HIGHLY niche product is only PR that won't ever trickle down to us lowly serfs.

    Every single year since personal 3d printers became a thing i have imagined the GW execs staring grimfaced at each other across a boardroom table and saying, "Well... I guess this is it. It's been a good run chaps, but it seems our days are numbered. I guess there's nothing left to do now but raise prices suicidally high and see how much we can bilk the bastards for to line our pockets with one last round of year-end bonuses."
    ...And every year they look a little more confused. At this point they just sort of shrug at each other in disbelief and stare vacantly out the window, wondering if they aren't perhaps in some kind of simulation or an extremely strange sort of afterlife.

Altered the website so an address was limited to one console. We also held half our stock for in-store purchase only. GW could have their initial release of X,000 and then switch to MTO. That would eliminate scalpers.
    It also doesn’t help that I had a Heresy book in my cart, ran into a CC fraud protection verification and the item was no longer in stock by the time it tried to finalize payment. If it’s in my cart, I should be given time to finish a transaction before it is taken away.

    1. You can ban scalpers.
    2. You can identify pictures used in multiple fakes.

    • @stunitech
      @stunitech 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The problem with this is you'd need a manual review team. That involves complexity and more importantly time and effort that would slow down their sales time. It also creates a lot of data protection shenanigans/legality around storing personal info. GW doesn't care who buys the product as long as it shifts. What the buyer does after that doesn't seem to overly concern them.
      The only real solution is to not buy from scalpers until limited edition stock is released under a regular schedule thus removing the artificial scarcity driving the ebay price up. This will never happen.

      I'm ok with the signed copies having a limit (to not overrun the poor writers who have to sign 2500 or so each time), but if they had a non-signed, deluxe edt made-to-order would not only defeat the scalpers, but it would appease even more customers and BOOST GW REVENUES! It would also take out the guesswork of both underprinting like most current product, and overproduction like what happened with the AoS Dominion box. You could even still maintain your FOMO strategies by limiting the window of time to order.

    I fondly remember when Leviathan came out. Suddenly you could easily get all the units in it for very reasonable prices from local scalpers. They had bought large quantities of the box and couldn't flog it with their uszal crazy mark-up. So they split up the boxes and sold the individual components, hoping to recuperate their losses.
    I got two squads of Assault Marines for €20.- each this way.
    If GW did the Leviathan 3-4 times in a row, the risk of financial loss would likrly kill a lot of scalpers.
    That said, this would be tricky to do for something like a limited run of The End and The Death signed by the author. Having Mr. Abnett sign 10.000+ copies doesn't seem like a feasible option.

As someone who’s been playing 40k since 2nd ed and picked up my first GW game back in ‘93, I really, really appreciate what you do. We need CCs like you, and I really hope making these vids is valuable to you, whether it be monetarily, self-fulfillingly, or both. GW is chasing the ‘let’s go whaling’-trend from always online videogames. As a publicly traded company, they can be sued for making business desicions that do not make money for their investors. I grew up on GW art and IP, and I love it - I will play in this universe until I die. But GW is the worst possible entity to look after this IP, much like Disney is the worst possible entity to watch over one of my other teenage wonders, Star Wars. Thank heavens for gifted, motivated individuals and the democracy of the internet. Third party game rules creators are a blessing. 3D printers go brrr. Gods bless, Discourse.

    I think you really have a point there with the hype-to-limited-release structure that GW has in place now.
    I remember the old and greatly beloved "Start Collecting!" boxes they sold. A phenomenal way to start or bolster an army. They kept them around for _ages_ and they were super popular. But then they replaced them with the Combat Patrol boxes. No longer a useful set of kits, these were supposed to be mini game system in a box with their own game system with models usable in mainline 40K. Except, the kits lacked synergy, the discount was heavily reduced, the sets tend to have to stick to the game system rather than be actually useful, and they _also_ still update them regularly, meaning the fear of missing out is still strong!
    So what's next? Are we heading towards a time of preset models and profiles? Are armies going to lose their flavour in favour of uniformity? Could GW go the Pokémon TCG route and rotate out models every couple of editions or so to justify selling new kits? Well we've already seen three big steps that way. Firstly, the move to put units and models into Legends. Why? You can write any set of rules for a miniature you've made, yet you chose not to. Secondly, the move towards ~Power Level~ the new points system. This hurt list building so much. Every unit now must fit into predetermined blocks. Maybe I don't want or need 10 models in a unit? But 5 isn't enough. Too bad. You have too many, and not enough points to put in another unit, leaving you with 45 points unspent. And speaking of rigid models - only having rules for what's in the box. This is already happening with Chaos Terminators; you only get one "paired accursed weapons" in the box. So no more lightning claw Terminators. They don't even get to declare what each weapon is now. I'm worried this will get worse with the new codex. Imagine being able to only run 2 Lascannon Havocs in a unit. It could definitely happen. The aforementioned stuff has...

Long term it's going to push away dedicated fans who simply want to play and enjoy the hobby. I can also see it devolving into people just collecting the "limited" run products to sell at a later date with zero interest in warhammer at all. I've seen that happen with magic, yugioh, and pokemon cards, and in recent years, lego (specifically starwars), and transformers (also thanks to the whole FOMO problem) I know businesses see the huge spike in numbers over a short period of time and assume it's a good thing, but it just ruins the enjoyment for everyone who isn't scalping or "investing".

The problem has evolved since I dropped out of the game in late 8th edition. and even back then it was a question of why do I want to spend 50 US dollars on a couple of grams of plastic because this new HQ unit will make my whole army much better. how the release cycle is pushing older models out of the game. treating it like a trading card game and not like a hobby where you have to put hours and hours of work into each individual unit to even put them on the tabletop in a proper setting. it's ridiculous and I don't really regret leaving the games workshop ecosystem.

    GW should be careful about chasing such short-term gains with their false scarcity model.... luxury goods only get away with it because their core customer base have high disposable incomes. It's not sustainable in the standard retail market because eventually people will need to spend their money on necessities over plastic crack, leading to an influx of 2nd hand products on the market which undermines their whole FOMO model. And there will be much rejoicing. (one of my favourite Python jokes btw...love it!)

    Sadly, while there is money to be earned, consumers are unlikely to change the way they conduct the behavior. If scalpers buy the items, they still get their money.
    FOMO and 'Sunk Fallacy' are dangerous for consumers. They know it. They exploit it. I do hope you can manage to affect some form of change!

    1. Create the "Problem"

    Limited window "print on demand" would severely reduce scalpers whilst also allowing for a small and manageable amount of FOMO (to create a "limited" feeling of exclusivity/rarity).
    For example:
    Space Marine Death Angel Primaris Lieutenant Extremis Ultra, AUD$80, Single Character: Available for pre-order for a 1 month period. Schedule for release in 6 months.

    i don't get why companies let this happen. There is no value to them to limit the copy of the collector edition. It upsets customers, it ruins experience, people will and do walk away and not participate in the future, for what? Just do pre-orders, fill the people who preorder that collectible. Let the rest of the folks buy regular, profit. Weird.

    From what l've seen most of those who buy the latest thing are those that chase the meta.
    My mates and l still use set we bought from second edition models ( gotta love metal sisters) through third ( black templars, fourth and fifth ultrameanies) to sixth Dark Angels.
    Yes we have primaris but only those we picked up in the Indomitus set and magazines to Leviathan.
    We don't chase the meta, we have fun.

    Thanks, for the stream.
    I seem to recall that GW themselves said in an article on war comm, maybe early last year or 2022, that scalping wasn't as big a problem as we thought. But I guess that opinion changed. Though it makes me wonder if it's convenient to blame scalpers.
    I'm not sure we can hang all the responsibility for a solution on GW. Everyone wants this de-regulated market but not the consequences. Things like Air B&B, though good in some ways, are proving to also be a pariah on communities. And in the case of scalping I'm thinking of how we all want to be able to buy internationally to get the best deal, avoid taxes, and so on - and while those platforms are good, they also provide a way for scalpers to easily sell their product.
    Certainly, there are things GW can likely do, but if they make a strict system, then a percentage of true fans will miss out and scalpers who are more likely to have the savvy to 'rort the system' will still get their product (as has been seen recently).
    I think it is probably unfair to lay all the responsibility for change on GW. I think it is a bigger problem than that. It will require GW to sort out their stock issues. Rethink their levels of production for limited edition considering they are a world wide company (6000 is too limited considering the size of the player base). But, it does require consumers to be responsible and refuse to buy from scalpers. And as this issue seems to affect more than just GW, I suspect a true solution will require some government attention to create more up-to-date anti-scalping laws which are actually enforced.

    • @MoadikumMoodocks
      @MoadikumMoodocks 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This kind of stuff is actually making GW seem like an unreliable company. And so, I am hesitant, for example, to get any Old World because I can't trust GW to actually come through with a functioning supported game. I hesitate to buy into smaller games because, like Aeronautica, they might just suddenly and unceremoniously vanish.

    Sell rare items only through the physical stores.
    1. Gives advantage to people who have a relationship within the store. "Regular Customers"
    2. If the store scalps product, it helps them to stay open longer. Not ideal, but relatively ositive outcome.
    3. Produce copies of rare items for every GW employee who wants to buy them. This prevents internal demand from affecting customer service. Serial number items in order to track abuse. Worse case, an employee is scalping, but also supplementing their income and working harder to stay at GW. Harder worker equals better service/product.
    Just some thought off the top. Great content! Keep up the wonderful work.

    • @phoenixofmetal
      @phoenixofmetal 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Selling limited items through physical store only will just send people who don't have easy access to a physical store straight to the resellers, which is the one thing we really don't need being encouraged if we want the reseller problem to get better.

    • @309freddie
      @309freddie 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@phoenixofmetal Admiitedly, you are correct. I'm lucky in that there are a number of shops with GW product nearby. Perhaps, its the balancing of which solution has the least abuse and going that way. There are people who will go to a local store selling certain Legos or action figures, pay retail and list them on eBay. Not sure how successful they are, but if a solution could help promote more visits to hobby shops, perhaps the demand would increase the number of stores and make things more accessible.
      GW could also limit realease for a year (or some determined time) and then open sales to be no longer limited. Obviously, it wouldn't work for autographed stuff, but there will always be an exploitable weak spot.

    Scalping will only end when people decide that they don't need whatever they're selling, after all. When the scalpers are stuck with a house full of miniatures, books, and game consoles that no one will buy, the scapers will have to find a new (hopefully legitimate) source of income.

    Personally, I just want limited items, like the Christmas Battleforces to be made to order for a certain period of time so that everyone who wants it can get it at least for the already high GW prices.
    However, at this point it may be too late, because those who care about the books already got free PDFs online and those who care about building certain armies at a discount might already have discovered 3D printing. Personally, I'm about to go full Ork with a bunch of "trash" I collected over the last years to make the cheapest army I had yet.
