Sarah Silverman Visits "Woke Vote" | I Love You, America on Hulu

  • Woke Vote is doing amazing work to organize voters and affect real change in Alabama and beyond. Most famously, they encouraged Alabama's black voters to get to the polls and vote in the Senate race last year, making a huge difference in that election. Black voters turned out in record numbers, overcoming the state's significant voter suppression efforts and other barriers, and won Democrat Doug Jones the Senate seat over Roy Moore. Sarah sat down with founder DeJuana Thompson and many other members of the cause. You can learn how to become a part of this movement for justice and equity at wokevote.us

    From inciting treason to telling poop jokes, Sarah Silverman has created her fair share of online chatter. With "I Love You, America," she's looking to connect with people who may not agree with her personal opinions through honesty, humor, genuine interest in others, and not taking herself too seriously. While it's great to connect with like-minded people, Silverman feels it's crucial, now more than ever, to connect with un-like-minded people.

      Also my assessment for years and Im a Moroccan dude living in Amsterdam (the Netherlands). I grew up looking up and identifying with African americans, since we didnt have any minorities on tv etc that we could look up to or identify with.
      Later on I started reading books , like Angela Davis her book, Ashata Shakur etc etc. And what needs to change is that we shed light to people that are in the trenches, that are 'invisible' but doing work, like a neighborhood lady putting in work for the community and doesnt get any credit, instead of worshiping celebs like a beyonce etc etc. Fuck that. Also power to the people. And much love from this Moroccan Muslim dude to the sisters in the US. Stay up ladies, yall endure a lot, and its incredible that you're still going strong! Peace

      Oh no! No effing way-I hate that!
      Maybe a little finely chopped celery or onion, mayo, salt & pepper. No weird shit though! No relish, no pimento, no peppers. I also make a version with chopped bacon & hard-boiled egg which is amazing but I don't take that one to other people's parties, lots of people won't eat bacon.
      Thanks for answering though! It's appreciated.

    6:54 that's the thing, though, power is corrupting. You say old white men because they are the face of power right now, and it is in human nature to buck whoever is in authority over them. No matter black, white, young, old, man, woman - people in power almost always fail to meet our expectations, as we would ourselves if we were ever put in charge. The outer appearance doesn't matter, it matters if the character of the individual is strong and principled enough, and so often in any human body packaging, it isn't.

    I just gave $100 to secure.actblue.com/donate/replacecollins. But I was thinking of something that you could do that would be even more effective than that.
    I loved your "Great Schlep" video from 10 years ago.
    Can you do something like that, but suggest that we spend our vacations anywhere but Maine? The Maine economy is dependent on tourism, and many/most of those people vote blue, and it wouldn't be that hard for them to go to Vermont or New York or MA or RI. You could also appeal to French Canadians. They probably can't donate to political campaigns, but they have every right to decide where they spend their vacation $$.
    Susan Collins is arguing to her supporters that outside groups like actblue shouldn't interfere with their internal politics. Her base might accept that, but the tourism argument is harder for them to argue with. We have every right to spend our tourism $$ elsewhere if we don't like the way their senator votes. The economy in Maine is not good, and super dependent on tourism. It wouldn't take much to make a bid difference.
    Please, please, please, please make a video like the Great Schlep (th-cam.com/video/-c3ImbC2BBk/w-d-xo.html), but this time say I love NY. Vermont's cool. RI and MA have nice beaches. Let's spend our vacation $$ there, and forget that "Maine Thing"....

    I like Sarah a lot, but this is a bit patronizing. "Omigosh! You black ladies united and helped the best candidate get elected??! Amazing!"
    Also, all the talk about race is divisive. If we could only get past all that and just be Americans, that'd be a beautiful thing. Get past the skin color and get to the content of the character, as Dr. King tried to instruct us.

    Kind of sad that, in 2018, we have "black cookouts" at all. That is, that the races are STILL very separated, socially.

    They're super amazing obviously and should be commended on all their efforts.
    But doesn't it jar your logic clock when on one hand they describe themselves as being "community-minded, for inclusivity and diversity"..... but then getting to know them intimately is by special invite only and even then you must adhere strictly to prescribed rules of behavior...?

      lotus 3.0 - Yeah, nah because social norms are arriving on time with clothes on, using manners and not trashing your host's house. What was "stipulated" was a demand to subscribe to, or at the very least not question, a particular sociopolitical ideology - not quite the same as diversity and inclusivity.

    The only thing I get from this segment is that Skin Color IS crucial. And that if you are white you will not be invited to the cook out without a film crew. OK, yes, as a white woman I got that idea already when Obama and Michelle were in the White House.

    • @tam9640

      ?? Did you not watch the video? They mentioned Lady Gaga, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren as examples of who they would invite.

    • @dbvor
      @dbvor 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tam9640 Oh wow, that was my point. Only very famous people with a film crew. Not your average whitey like me. And this is out of the Obama playbook. He was not a president for all people and made that loud and clear. Btw Elizabeth Warren is not white according to herself.

    • @tam9640
      @tam9640 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dbvor What I'm gathering from the examples is that they want people who are allies to the black community. Would you invite someone to your gathering who you know does hold the same morals at heart? And it's interesting that you bring up Obama considering how Trump has been targeting the LGBT, immigrants, women, and minorities ever since he stepped into office. The 'cookout' isn't about exclusion, it's about solidarity and showing respect. Sarah showed respect and listened. Can you honestly say you do the same to the black community?

      I'm a white woman and I have been invited to and shown up for a black cookout. Perhaps if you changed the thoughts in your mind that are currently limiting your possibilities, you might actually one day get invited to a cookout. Or better yet, maybe you could just invite some black people from your community to your own cookout to get to know them and learn a little about each other's cultures. The similarities and the differences. We are all the same human beings. Our cultures and how we grew up are in many cases different...sometimes extremely and sometimes not at all. But we're ALL Americans...we all want to be loved....we all want someone to love...we all want opportunities to thrive...we want to feel valued....we all want to have enough to eat...we all want a roof over our heads...to stay warm in the winter/cool in the summer....we all want to be able to go to a dr if we get sick and have the means to pay for it....we all want to take care of our families and be taken care of by our families...we all want to laugh...enjoy our friends...you get my point. We are all so similar. Invite a family of color over for dinner or to your next BBQ. And if that seems too much at first...perhaps ease into "different" by first inviting another white family over who has a different religious background than yours (or an atheist) and share a meal and a conversation with them. It's enlightening, interesting and you'll be learning things about yourself as well. It's not difficult to open your heart.

      @@kleding11 You clearly do not get sarcasm but that's OK. I am an immigrant from Europe and lived in Africa for 2 years and 3 years in Brazil so yeah I have been to plenty of cook outs. Difference there is that certain races do not see themselves as victims like Barack and Michelle and their friends and they do not constantly (actually never) point out my so called 'white supremacy'. Was very pleasant and I made many real friends there.
