  • We're back with Part 9 of the Citroen SM Daily Driver Challenge! This time we'll tidy up the engine bay a bit more and keep working on the headlight conversion, trying to repair the hydraulic system that steers the lights...
Thanks to everyone who ordered a t shirt or some stickers to help support our channel! Much appreciated.
The shirts are being printed next week, and as soon as they are finished I will be shipping them full-time until they are all on the way. There have been some slow arrivals due to customs backlog, but overall the first run was a success. We will likely be offering a different shirt soon, so no worries if you missed out on this one!
As usual, we'd like to thank everyone for subscribing, and for all of your "likes" and comments; I do read every one, and answer all that I can! Please do hit the like button and subscribe if you can, because it really helps get our videos played or placed in the "suggested" line-up. Thanks!
Coming soon, we have more on the Model A project, and the final installment of the 1951 Chevy Bel Air series... I hope you like it! Also: perhaps a marathon series on splicing the Fury in a week-long thrash with vids every night? Let me know what you think!
All the very best from me and Miss Frankers!

Frankers rules ! If my friend Marco (from Italy) was still alive he would love this. He was a Citroen fanatic. He came from a family that restored ancient art , statues and fountains over in Italy. He was super great with every little detail when restoring a car. He died in a car accident 6 years ago, age 53.

Yay! More SM footage! In my case (urban, wife, neighbors) a case of FCD would be fatal. I do, however, suffer from FBD (French Bike Disease), with a collection of Motobecanes, Gitanes, and the odd Mercier and Jeunet. My 1971 Gitane Super Corsa is sort of the SM of the bike world. A franco-italian mashup that was an expensive long distance tourer. And French bikes have all the weird idiosyncrasies of a Citroen. Keep posting! Love it.

Wow! A note from the man himself! Much flattered that you would take the time, sir. Well, if I can't get the original system dialed in, I'll very certainly be bothering you again, haha! Thanks so much for the help thus far; I love this car, and can't wait to finish the repairs and go for a drive... All the very best from here!

The complexity of this thing blows my mind. Today, all that stuff would be run by a computer, amazing what you can do with a hundred billion unique parts and some hydraulic fluid. Such an awesome car. You, Dean and Frankers should do a road trip video when it's done.

This is the only channel that I always read all the comments on. Then I realize everything I wanted to say has already been said. If you like your car resto channel to be a mixture of profound philosophical observation, stoner goofiness, masterful craftsmanship, gentle guy (and sometime girl) comaraderie , life in a cold and sometimes mosquitoey climate and canine appreciation, this is the channel for you. Just awesome.

Back in 1972 when I was a kid working at a local service station near a hospital the two orthopedic surgeons in town each had a new SM. One of them was white, the other was chocolate brown. The front ends were silver on both of them. Both cars were late 1971 models. Each car stickered at the time at over $10,000.00 bucks.

The SM was ahead of it's time by making the car so hard to work on the average guy at home couldn't fix it, a below average professional mechanic would screw it up by doing improper repairs to cut corners, and a good mechanic would charge a lot of money to fix it. Of course a great mechanic would never touch it. He'd send you to the dealer, or convince you to get a different car. In that way they're like modern cars, damn hard to work on without a crapload of special tools.
Much respect to you man, you are a great mechanic and a fantastic fabricator. You perform automobile magic in your shop. I bow before your awesomeness. (I hope this comment makes sense. I'm typing it a 2:41 am after being up since 6 am yesterday. Insomnia sucks ass, but you videos don't) Cheers to you, Frankers, and the rest of the agents. *:-)*

A below average mechanic is not a professional. He either works for his dad,has great dirt on his boss or married his daughter. To get the skills Mr.Coldwar has, will absolutely be On the Job training,AND you must have determination in a sensible way.

Not to take away in any way from your amazing skill, but, for those not possessed of your skills there are books on most, if not all cars. This is no different with Citroen, e.g., the D-Series Citroen was the same basic model from 1955-1975. For some maintenance issues, I take my car (1969.5 ID-19) to an area Citroen mechanic (By the way, the national Citroen club had, perhaps still does, a book that identified all of the Citroen repair shops in the U.S). For many other issues within my limited expertise I rely on Autopress. Ltd.'s Citroen 19, 20, 21 - 1966-73 Autobook (Workshop Manual) for the how-to of repairs that I do. Also, surprisingly there are lots of Citroen repair TH-cam videos. My point is that a person with a somewhat above average mechanical aptitude can realistically possess, own and maintain one of these complicated machines and not relinquish control to high dollar repair shops inclined to relieve one of all of his/her wealth.

Ah, the algorithms. 10 seconds of Ozzyfesr from CWM with Dean and The Tube cues up a clip in my feed of Colbert called, “ Sharon Osborne remembers Ozzie doing ‘crappy things’ “. Good to see Dean survive the frightening moment when looming Superstardom threatened to stifle his naturalness on camera. Frankers carries a big stick to the rescue! The slomo fly swatting while she pokes and taunts is priceless! She really comes into her own here as a full fledged TV star.

I've been watching these car crusher videos lately, the ones that take an entire car and reduce it to rubble in a couple of minutes. It is terrifying.
There aren't going to be any more classics. Between the fact that everything built today is junk and old cars are being reduced to rubble, the classics we have rescued is all there is going to be.

Did they have a bronze (ish) metallic, would look great with tinted windows. I have a '96 Geo metro in GM Maple Mist metallic. I used the extra from a fender repair to paint the bottom half of my Triumph gas tank and fenders. I got lots of compliments from the BMOC members. Great 750four. Frankers is a smart dog. I had an uncle in Oyen, Alta. who loved his Ltds too. I never really saw the appeal. The weirdness of the SM engineering makes it so cool. Good to see the progress. Rock on guys!

A really complex solution to turning the lights. You wonder if they had loads of pure engineering guys, they said to them wouldn't it be great if the headlights turned with the steering. Result never mind some rods and levers, we could engineer a system with hydraulics, get me some pipes, solenoids, oh and some levers and rods. Pure genius. I wonder if back when Citroen launched these how "excited" the dealers were about the tech?

The steam cleaning after the oil based scrub down seems to work really well except for the vision issues. Perhaps combine compressed air, possibly a second person which could also be used to blow away any left over contaminants and water, as well as the steam.

I grew up 10 miles from the American Motors plant In the Gurnee/Waukegan area of Lake county Illinois. The plant was just over the state line in Kenosha Wisconsin. So there were a lot of "Kenosha Caddilacs " as we called them , in the area when I was young. My dads first NEW car was a 69 RamblerAmerican. Other relatives had a variety of AMC cars over the years .
My first car was a '69 Rambler American wagon .. the high level trim 440 model, it had the chrome luggage rack on top, green with a white painted top. It was a v8 car, 290 2 barrel. There were lots of 'left handed cigarettes' smoked in that car[grin].

Thank you for sharing these videos on your SM project - you are doing some amazing work! I'm in the process of going through a '73 SM myself right now and am just about to repair the headlight actuator associated with the vertical movement. FWIW - I believe the headlight fluid is supposed to be a type of antifreeze (not LHM).

Correction: early SMs with euro lights used LHM in the headlight lines - they switched to antifreeze sometime after 1970...

If you ever want a plan B for those headlight actuators, John Titus sells a cable actuator conversion. I don't have any experience with them, but I have his electronic ignition on my SM (and I think so does just about everyone else).

Was going to suggest that to Scott as well. Actually, the swiveling lights on my '68 DS19 (Canadian model) worked with just cables, although there were only the two of four. The other two "regular" lights had a mechanical linkage to the front sway bar to keep the headlights leveled as the car pitched. This was useless and only caused the bulbs to fail sooner from all the shaking they got.

Yes the headlight turning system was over engineered to the extreme. LHM will probably give you issues with adjustment drift as it does not have the correct viscosity. What Citroen used is actually unknown, but people have been using lamp oil and various other liquids.. SM world does have a mechanical rebuild option ala the DS. I would consider that.
But I love the repair :)
PS: Once you start the panel prepping, please make a detailed episode on your right rear panel dent removal. Would love to see a master in work on that. :)

The SM is the only car where you REALLY need to check your headlight fluid!

Hi Scott, great to see an update on the SM the frontend is looking pretty good, nice and straight now. I would say a definite yes to a week long series on the Fury. Dean reminds me of Jim from Taxi do you remember that guy? Reverend Jim I think he was.

Scott you have the patience of Job, myself on the other hand is more ADHD. I am restoring a 75 F-150 on a budget and I can't stay still long enough to get anything done. Anyway I hope to order a sticker from you next time so I can put it on the 75 and a t-shirt for myself. Say hello to Dean and of course Frankers. Cheers from Texas.

    (Return of) FRANKERS!!
(With bonus footage of Dean performing as "Spicoli" in Fast Times at Ridgemont High -
Dean as a thespian? Who would have seen THAT coming?)
Speaking of SM - the sight of Dean being thrashed by Frankers with a stick, well... (insert your own sordid
    cheesy adult video title here).
    Yeah, I went there. :-)
I must admit I'm one of those who just never "got" Citroens. Growing up in the south in the 60's and 70's,
I just never saw many of them and when we did, they just struck me as - what's a kind word here - odd?
    Yeah, I'll go with odd.
(Bear in mind, though - first time I saw an Opel GT, I thought it was a "baby Corvette", so grain of salt...)
The shadetree me that developed over the years took that one step further into the "what the hell were they
thinking?" realm of disbelief as I'd see one at a show. The owners were always - again searching for a kind
    word here - eccentric?
    Yeah, I'll go with eccentric.
Now, being the true CWM fanatic that I am, I am starting to see the light on these more thanks to Scott.
(Or perhaps it's just early onset Alzheimer's - pick 'em).
The opinion of these cars being "engineering run amok when cost and any semblance of sanity is tossed
out the window" is admittedly being replaced to an extent with a mechanical curiosity and appreciation for
the way Scott methodically (ok, damn near lovingly) goes about doing this one justice.
Well, for lack of any other motivation, you certainly stand little chance of passing another one on a Sunday
drive in the country at least.
Y'all be safe up there. No huffing the two-part urethane!

Actually, there are maybe one or two other working SMs in Scott's neighborhood, so the chances of passing another one are fairly high :-).

Yes, it might take a while to re-visit some other CWM videos where they will show up matter-of-factly as Scott visits his nearby classic car owners. Here's a link th-cam.com/video/qCaeNt-8qO8/w-d-xo.html
