    Hello mate, the mechanical complexity is fascinating, what a terrifically engineered vehicle and so different to anything else I've seen. Performance is good too when you consider the size and weight of the car, it would put many 70s and 80s V8 cars to shame. Good that you didn't plate anything haha, that car is so much better being left original - the cleaned up original appearance is so much better than the glossy tarted up look. And that balljoint is a work of art... you should see the one I uncovered on the shit box I'm playing with... Cheers and take care.

    • @01trsmar
      @01trsmar 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the late 1970's V8 cars were slowed down with lower compression and Chrysler vehicles lean burn(spark control computer and smog carb) But remove that they have a lot more performance and are pretty quick ! Vacuum advanced distributor,ecu and a non smog carburetor or aftermarket performance carb !
      Remember old recorded times were tested different than today,I don"t know about the Citroen but American cars from the 1960's and early 1970's (even late 1950's Hemi mopars,red ram 318 duel 4bbl in the Fury325,350,361,383) The 60's and 70's cars would spin the skinny tires and slow them down,as they had no traction when recorded on sand beach as 1950's cars were...1960's and 1970's parking lots,back roads even in the rain ! Some were on tracks and that said the drag strips had no compounds like today..Drag Slicks of the 60's and 70's were not better than a modern radial on the average new car fro traction !!! You know the modern space saver skinny spare,thats the width of tires on old cars..Wide Tread performance tires were 195-60 and 70 series 14 and 15 inch !! 1970 they had basically a 205 width and thats skinny ! Even big C body 383 4bbl and 440 cars would never hook up,even from a roll they spun the tires at 15-20 mph when floored ! Fun,but you lost races at the light to lesser cars as you spun across the intersection ,yes 4 lane intersections lol..
      Gearing of todays cars are totally different too...Transmision gearing in 8 speads are 4.81 vs 2,45 for a 3 speed automatic that alone makes cars jump off the line,thats why 6 cyl cars are quick today..Also Asian cars have low axle ratio's lower than American makes..down to 5.38's for some models even a Hond a Accord will run 4.xx !! Though they still are not as quick as a 383 4bll C body with 3.23 gearing ! I have alte model car lot and own every type of car I have a few 2018's on my lot (lease returns aka x rentals) I also own many unrestored Mopars and restored Mopars..mainly B body 68-70 but a few e bodies and a few C bodies ! And I own a few 2014-2018 Hemi Mopars..5.7,392 and 6.2 s.c !
      Sorry for the babble..But Yes and No the Citroen can beat some YES the 1980's stock V8 cars sure,mid to late 70's will be on the tail of smogger 360 4bbl's...beat smog lean burn 318's by a mile,non lean burn 318's would be close depending how accurate the performance test was on the Citroen !! It might boil the tires off the line,or not..Didnt see the hp/torque,anyways 8 seconds 0-60 isnt bad its quick for a 2000's average type car..137 mph makes it a highway car that beats most new car(non performance) for top end..
      Remember the Citroen does 137 mph so I wonder what gear it has,must be a sweat highway car...

      Peter dares you to remove that Maserati engine in the SM for a quick splash of paint in the engine bay, and while you're at it put those SM seat covers through the washing machine. • @GreyTheFloydianSergal
    @GreyTheFloydianSergal 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    this episode is very significant as Dean states that he doesn't like something. I'm so so glad that you're progressing with the SM. I adore classic Citroens & hope to get a BX at some point after I get my Talbot Alpine on the road. There is more innovation in your SM than any car launched in 2018, Citroen made awesome cars back in the day & it's just a shame their name is just plastered on restyled Peugeots. Thinking of a good colour for the SM, it would have to be something quite flamboyant & luxurious, maybe a deep metallic red or a crystal blue/green. Maybe even just go for a bright Alpine white (similar to the Playboy roadtest car), it would certainly show off the clean lines of the car

    • @gosportjamie
      @gosportjamie 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Colour, of course, is very much a matter of personal taste, but I feel that strong colours really don't work well on the SM. There are a few around in a rather bright mustard yellow (apparently and original factory colour) and it just looks wrong, it rather ruins the styling. The original silver/grey is a very good colour for these, and it is a very contemporary colour now...

    • @GreyTheFloydianSergal
      @GreyTheFloydianSergal 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gosportjamie I think yellows & oranges would definitely be too much, but a deep red (almost burgundy) in metallic would look really smart I think. But of course a Bright White would look simply delicious

    • @gosportjamie
      @gosportjamie 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GreyTheFloydianSergal Yes, a deep wine red metallic would look superb, I have seen one in that sort of a colour and it was so much of a head-turner that I walked into a lamp post. The bright white would look good too, it would need to be a proper white, not an off-white to really stand out but that would work well with all the polished stainless trim. But, it's not our car so it's not our decision. I'm sure Scott has some ideas of his own and, being a painter among his other talents, he probably has a good idea what colours would work and what wouldn't. I must admit I like the silver grey he tried on the wing/fender but I'm not sure it would work on the whole car and it's a bit modern, it might get a little lost in a sea of blando-boxes often painted that sort of colour...

    • @GreyTheFloydianSergal
      @GreyTheFloydianSergal 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gosportjamie I agree with that statement. Scott should know what he's doing & I'm sure he'll make a grand choice, he may even have something in mind that we haven't covered. It's such a shame that silver is such a common colour now-a-days, at least cars like my Beige Talbot Alpine now have a chance to stand out

    • @gosportjamie
      @gosportjamie 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GreyTheFloydianSergal Yes, you certainly don't see many beige cars around now, though some of the modern whites come very close to being beige. You needn't worry, a Talbot Alpine will stand out whatever colour it is...

    This car is amazing in all aspects. It is astounding how over engineered a bunch of the components are, and how a bunch of them are just so complex just for the sake of it. I guess that's how the French like to do things. I enjoy reading about historical tanks and aircraft and the French are well known for doing the same on machines where people's lives matter. Matra and Renault are the ones that come to mind from my reading. Anyways, if a colour change is due I can't wait to see what you come up with! If it was mine, I'd change it to Royal Blue with gold trim and white accents. It's very French but I'm also a fan of dark blues :)
    Love all the work going into the marvelous car and letting us come along for the ride.

    "Ask and ye shall receive." I commented on an earlier video about another installment on this beauty...Lo and behold, I turn on youtube today, & this is the 1st notice I got. So of course, I fixed lunch and settled in for an informative & humorous half-hour from the gearheads north. Fantastic stuff! Francine did her best to keep you all from sounding like shows on, ahem, Motor Trend..Dean is Dean(thank God), & you know there's always someone in your group that enjoys throwing sand in your bearings(what's his name again?). Anyway - I don't know if you know, but there's this little known game called Grand Theft Auto V, & believe it or don't, there's a car that you can purchase online that looks suspiciously like a SM. I bought one & painted it yellow (it does look good) lol. I'll send you a photo...Thanks for making a snowy Monday better.
    P. S. I "read" my dad's Playboys for the crazy #GahanWilson cartoons. My favorite was the one where 2 guards are escorting an unruly prisoner to solitary, & he's begging, "Anywhere but the HOLE!" You get one guess what hole he's referring to...

    The CWM SM restoration is a great undertaking and not something the average mechanic could do, and all the other things such as, installing Euro head lights that weren't originally there , rebuilding old parts, repairing the rust, and fixing the body & paint. And being that it is a Citroen, it's complicated. It is a mountain of work and analogous to climbing a mountain.
    But it's not as dangerous as an expedition to climb "Mount Annapurna I, that is over 8,000 metres (26,000 ft) high in Nepal, with the highest fatality-to-summit ratio (32%) is the highest of any of the eight-thousanders mountain peaks. In particular, the ascent via the south face is considered, by some, the most difficult of all climbs. In October 2014, at least 43 people were killed as a result of snowstorms and avalanches on and around Annapurna, in Nepal. Since March 2012, there had been 191 summit ascents of Annapurna I, and 61 climbing fatalities on the mountain". See Wiki.
    I'm just having fun here, you guys are great, God bless you all and Frankers too.

      Hi! Thanks for the note and for your enthusiasm for the SM project! I am still working on it, but I like to have enough work shown in each video to make them worth watching, so I just film what I am doing for a while, then edit it all together at once. The SM is a big job that I want to do properly, so I have to take my time. More soon for sure...Cheers!

    The engineering that went into these cars is incredible. I wonder if any designers of the Citroen SM were also in aircraft design as well. When I look at the mechanicals of this car, it just reminds me of aviation quality materials and design. I don't know too many mechanics that want to work on and restore a Citroen. Thanks for the great video!

      first hydraupneumatic Citroën (red fluid) use aviation hydraulic fluid (name Air 3520 in France), but for better reliability (better lubrication), mineral oil (green) was finaly introducted in 1968. The hydraulic system is not so complicated as many think, but many very intelligent solutions was use (for example for the DIRAVI steering), the geabox is ~the same as on the DS super 5, the only real difficult part to maintain is the Maserati engine who as a very long list of conception and built fails: only deep modified engines are realy reliable...the best was the Regembeau engines, but they cost a fortune...

    They really are amazing cars. Until you shone a light on them I never noticed before. But complex for their time seems to me. We all have a preference and it's neat seeing someone else's. Great video as always guys. Definitely not the same old shit. It never is.

    I sure am happy I'm not the only one that appreciates good, well engineered parts. Usually I just get strange looks from the corners of people's eyes.
    Very fine ball joint indeed, it just seems an adjustable preload would be logical and mainstream, apparently not.

    AC082 Gris Largentière Grey

      Thanks for the note! Yeah, I drove this one a bit before I took it apart, and it is just the best car I've ever driven, by far! I'm leaning towards "Brun Scarabee" for the colour, or back to the original silver, depending on the time I can put into the car...Cheers!

    I was a little surprised when you said that there was something that you could not do for your self, so I googled "diy silver plating". It looks like you may have some options if it is really ridiculously priced.
    What I love about your show is not so much about how you get over the hurdles, but instead its how you just move them out of the way.

      Oh, this is definitely one of those cars where a parts car goes a long way! Every piece of it seems specially designed for this model only! I can't even use the relays from one a year older, because the harness is different. I love it so much though; it is going to be so worth it once it is done... All the best from me and Frankers!

    Always wondered why the NA version of the SM did not have the plastic cover over the lights and center on the grill. The latest SM update solves the mystery - exterior cup holders! Citron knew back in 1971 that we are in love with cup holders. Perfect place to place coffee / beer / soft drink cartons.
