  • Hey! We're back with Part 2 of our very old, very cold start Plymouth project! This time we'll finish putting the engine together and start cranking and seeing if it'll go...
    This Plymouth hasn't run in over 50 years, so we are looking forward to seeing if it is still able to run.
    Thanks again to everyone who subscribed to our channel, and thanks for all of your "likes" and comments and questions... I will answer as many as I can!
    All the very best from myself and Stella and the rest of the guys that help out on these vids just for the hell of it.
    Cheers!

    Really is remarkable how something that old with a factory defective carb has probably never even run as smooth as it does now.

    • @coldwarmotors
      @coldwarmotors  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One viewer suggested that the carb had been replaced with a different one from an industrial engine, I think he is right. I am very happy with how smoothly the engine runs now! Cheers...

    It was deja-vu all over again. Watching the crank-with-backfire I was transported back to the 60s. My dad had a '55 Plymouth and had removed the distributor for some reason. Put it back 180 out, got the same results. My teenage self thought about it and deduced what must have happened. I reconnected the plug wires and *voila* it started right up. Thanks for the memory!

    The Plymouth once trusty,
    With starter so crusty,
    And fuel long since musty,
    Lay years dank and dusty,
    When it's pistons so rusty,
    Sang again with the lusty
    Tune of her engine so strong

    I have a 50 GMC and the motor was buried under grease, looked like hell complete with 3 different plug manufacturer's and shitty wires. An old mechanic friend came over, tested the coil and boom. Started it right up and sat there and purred. I couldn't believe it. There's something to be said of those old motors. They truly were great. Raise a glass to the cars of yesteryear and save as many of them that you can. Cars today are nothing compared to these beauties. Great video you guys as always, thank you for bringing us along. 👍👍👍

    Fuckin Awesome Guys!!! Takes me back to the 80s,I bought a 49 Dodge panel van Dog house off a farmer for 100 bucks..only had 2 spark plugs,the hood was open for 30 years,the whole engine was covered with pine needles..Cleaned her up,replaced the spark plugs,..It started the 2nd try!! The water pump was toast..Was driving around that night!!

    • @coldwarmotors
      @coldwarmotors  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, these old Chrysler sixes are just sweeties! Almost indestructible... just not fast enough to keep up by the late 50s, so they went away pretty quickly. Too bad; I bet a lot of them were driven to the junkyard.Thanks for the note and for watching this stuff!

    I like your gravity fed "IV" fuel line to the carburetor. Decades ago when I was a motorcycle mechanic I rebuilt an old Honda 305 Superhawk engine. Some how I got the overhead camshaft off by one tooth. Well..............the engine ran a little but backfired horribly though the carburetors. I had to remove the engine AGAIN and remove the top end and reset the cam chain sprocket. I put it all back together and the thing started up and ran like a sewing machine! I learned a very valuable lesson to take extra care when placing the cam in the correct position on a over head valved engine. I love this video because when I saw that little backfire from the carb, I knew that the distributer was way off. Great video guys, and the next time Stella wants to play ball oblige her and have some fun!

    I recently purchased a '56 Olds 88 with the original 324 in it after it had sat for many years (it comes with BC plates from 1986). The oil in it was like tar, and the gas in the tank is probably as useless as piss by now. We changed the oil and filter and ran a line from a five-gallon gas can with fresh high-test to the fuel pump and it started right up and ran as smooth as silk.

    coldwarmotors Love the Car Project, and Love Stella! Can Hardly wait to hear it start takes me back to pulling an old 1950 Chevy Pickup out of a field that sat for at least 10 years. Got It started and boy did it smoke, but I did the crank and re shimmed the old 216 cu six. It was a 3 window cab and drove it 10 years. Paid $50. for it. Had about $200. in it. This is what I love about old cars you can bring them back. When new ones die today they are just one thing junk!

    Those flatheads are so much fun, I had a 47 Pontiac chief 8 cylinder original flathead, only problem I had once, the gasket burned a split between two cylinders and noticed lost power so I removed the head resurfaced it and put in a new gasket, that Pontiac was my favorite car it ran for a long time till I gave it to my brother it’s been sitting for years.

    Nice job!! Flatheads are forgiving, low compression right outta the factory and fat rings for the taxi-drivers. Those farmers were probably running 50/50 oil/kerosene in the crank case during the winter so the 6V would start (plus a hill).

      I was interested to see your starter apart with the foot powered engagement. I once owned a 39 DeSoto, though it was really a Plymouth rebadged and re-grilled for our local market. You know the story there. Anyway, mine had a solenoid engaged starter for the simple reason that the driver in my part of the world sits on the other side. I love your videos - if ever I can return the favour by offering you hospitality in Australia, just yell out. Lots of people on Facebook share my name, but I'm the one playing the accordion!

      And another thought too. I'd have bet good money that an engine like that would have had at least one and possibly more stuck valves. Maybe the reason it didn't was the sooty oily shittiness caused by the carburettor?

    That's AWESOME!!!! Wish I was there having some of that fun!! Please don't pay any attention to that guy with the 383 idea!! That little baby already "purrs". Hey, I ran across a guy who sells starter rebuild kits on-line. He's in Canton Ohio. Let me know if you want his info. Quite reasonable and he's nice to work with. Can't wait to see how this progresses and motors down the road. ;o)
