  • If free 3 yard quilt patterns are your jam, this video will show you how to make a 3 yard quilt and where to get the free pattern! Who doesn't love a FREE pattern and with only 3 yards of fabric in yor quilt! I bought the fabric on sale for $4.99 per yard, using 3 yards for the quilt then an extra half yard for the binding. This entire quilt top cost under $20 bucks! That's amazing!!!
~***~Sister Chicks Border/Binding formula: First I measure the length or the width in 3 places (both sides and center) on my quilt and take the average of those 3 numbers.
Add together the meaasurements of both sides and the top and bottom,
Divide this number by 42" or the WOF, round up to a whle number. That number will tell you the number of border/binding strips you will need. If you times that number by the width of your border or binding you will know how much yardage you need.

I am a fan of 3 yard quilts. I am a fairly new quilter, under 5 years. Each of my 10 grand children and lots of new babies got quilts from me in 2021. I committed to making 15 quilts last year for my great nieces and nephews. I targeted each to be 48 x 60. To me they looked small, but all the kids thought they were just right for watching TV, either laying on them on the floor or covering up on the couch. I made all of them 3 yard quilts and no two patterns were the same. They are my “go to” patterns for a quick quilt top. Love your show!

I LOVE 3-yd quilts! I found Donna Roberts some time ago and purchased a few books. Then researching quilts online I found a multitude of free 3-yd quilt patterns. I’ve made several strictly following the pattern and found that some quilts feel a bit “off kilter” with the pattern so I often add an additional block at the end of each row to balance the pattern flow, pleasing my eye. It also makes the quilt larger so I’ve purchased 1.25-2.00 yards more. With the leftover material I have enough for a double binding and I use the remaining fabric to make a design element for the backing. Works out very well!

You are a recent happy find, you just showed up so l began to watch and after about four minutes of watching you, l thought, ”This Chick (Gal) really has it together!” and l subscribed! This adorable quilt is perfect and wow, so is the price. Even though you made a little mistake, l appreciate that you shared it and that makes me like you all the more! I’m 75 and raising my late children’s children. I am easily distracted and tire quickly, therefore l make a lot of those type of little mistakes, believe me. I love buying fabric, would rather buy fabric than food! Thank you for going public, you’re a good teacher 👩‍🏫.

"As long as you don't stretch [the border] fabric" -- ohhhh, the memory... 😳 My very first quilt was going okay until the second side border. The first border, I'd measured the length of the top 3 times, took the average, patted out the fabric strip, then cut the border. Worked great! Second side, I SMOOTHED the fabric strip (much more confident this time) before cutting the same measurement. I wondered WHY I was having so much extra of the quilt top to ease in as I pinned the border on. After hand stitching the second border on, the right side of the quilt looked so wrong! I got out the measuring tape and felt horrified to discover that the second border was 1 1/8" shorter than the first!!! Man... What to DO??? I finally decided to brazen it out, rather than picking out all of my hand stitches: I knew I couldn't compensate for a full 1 1/8", but if I could reduce the discrepancy by half an inch, maybe it wouldn't look so drastic. I carefully cut the top border so that the last few inches would ease down at an angle to give an extra 1/4" across the top of the second side border; inverted that process to ease up an extra 1/4" across the bottom of the side border. Thankfully, that border fabric had an all-over pattern, which helped disguise the uneven seam lines. As I hand quilted along that side of the block edges, I made sure to ease the excess block fabric to try to disguise my grievous errors. The quilt actually turned out okay! Just a tinge over 1/2" difference in side lengths after binding. 🥰 After I brought my quilt to Show&Tell, our guild president (who was also a professional quilt show judge) looked it over, commenting that the quilt was well done, although she spotted "a few rookie mistakes." That didn't bother me at all, because she completely MISSED my "first aid" efforts to try to lengthen the right side of the quilt!!! Even when I pointed out what I was talking about, it still took a moment to sink in. Hee! But all of that mess could have been avoided, if only I hadn't stretched the border fabric while smoothing it! Egad! Your admonition really brought back some memories! Thanks so much, also, for a terrific tutorial! I really enjoyed this quilt! 😺

That little girl is going to love this beautiful quilt you made for her. She's a lucky little girl. I have a ton of scrap fabrics that I am trying to use up. Plus, I have many one yard cuts of 100% cotton quilt fabrics that my daughter sent to me for Christmas, Mother's Day, and my birthdays (until postage became so high that we both decided to stop exchanging gifts through the mail). Yes, I am very interested in three yard quilts. This should help me get my stash under control while making quilt tops for children. Wonderful idea. I think every veteran piece maker, or quilter, should have a stack of three yard quilts made, finished, washed, and ready to donate when they are needed.

I'm a big fan of 3 yard quilts! I used to feel that I needed to make all of my quilts bed sized but got overwhelmed before I even got started. Since I began making 3 yard quilts, I've been churning them out like crazy - all sizes. Last year I made 20 quilts and I'm up to 10 already this year. FYI. I use Martelli Enterprises (from Pensacola,Florida) rulers that don’t move when you lay them on your fabric. They have special non skid material on the underside. But they are solid so you have to get used to not having a clear ruler. Caren marks

Hello! I’m a fellow Emmett quilter and I thoroughly enjoy your videos! As for Three Yard Quilts, I love them for a quick gift quilt. They are the perfect child size. When I make them for me I usually buy extra yardage to add border width to make them more of an adult size lap quilt. Easy peasy. Maybe call that 3 1/2 yard quilt. 😉
