    You have no idea how life-saving this material actually is. I realize this video is several years old, but the content is still relevant and I hope you know how very appreciated you are to us struggling artists, good sir.

  • @HuntingSunder
    @HuntingSunder 10 ปีที่แล้ว +687

    I found myself mimicking the expressions of the drawings as I watched the video. Does anyone else do that? For example, if I'm drawing a snarling wolf, I frequently find myself growling at my computer screen.

    • @Jazza
      @Jazza  10 ปีที่แล้ว +143

      ALL. THE. TIME. My face always mimics the expression I draw, less so in this video because I'm talking all the way through, but when drawing on my own I can't help it!

    • @HuntingSunder
      @HuntingSunder 10 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Glad I'm not the only one! Whenever I'm drawing or focusing on something (for example, carving a pumpkin) in public, my friends laugh and snap pictures of the weird faces I make. XD

    • @BvousBrainSystems
      @BvousBrainSystems 9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Hunting Sunder That's gotta look weird for the people around us x)
      Another thing I do is that I tend to breathe slowly and loudly when I'm focused. According to other people, it's something to behold.

    This is absolutely what Ive been looking for. I love the emotion these bring to my characters faces. I find it fun to play around with these, mix them and whatnot, to see what I can get. Thanks a ton for the great video.

    quick note for the happy expression: pupils tend to dilate (get larger) when you see something you like, rather than get smaller i think. I may be wrong but yeah, just a bit of le info

    I was planning on only looking at this for about 5 minutes. Then as time went on, it had been nearly 20! Your tutorials really do help me and are easy to become addicted to! Thanks for being awesomely helpful Jazza!

  • @thedevo01
    @thedevo01 8 ปีที่แล้ว +104

    Pupil dilation is a significant cue to a level of excitement, pleasure, or attraction. Therefore, when drawing happy faces, the pupils should dilate instead of shrink.

    • @meerkatnip892
      @meerkatnip892 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      ok this was commented 7 months ago but i sometimes encounter that happy vs. manic problem as well and i think it's caused by having the eyes too far opened. when you're happy you usually don't raise your eyebrows, instead they are pulled down by contracting the orbicularis oculi (had to use the fancy lingo), the same muscle that creates the bunched skin under your eyes

    The reason I like jazza’s art videos is because I like how he can see how the drawing will end up, for example, something might not look to good but once he finishes the drawing it look a lot better, and he can TELL it will look could

    Hey Jazza I have a suggestion for an episode, but before I begin I wanna say I'm a fan of your work and the tutorials are pretty spot on and it's helping me out with my drawings. Could you post up a tutorial of drawing faces with dynamic expressions at different angles? I'm having a little trouble getting the lines to be where they need to be and I gotta say it's a little challenging for a beginner, could you help me out? Please and thank you!

    remember, for good dynamic expressions (and gestures) you always need to draw opposite lines of eyes, mouth or whatever. Same thing with torso and hips, in mostly situations they are opposite to each other

    I know that my ears move up when I'm surprised. (I can move them on command too, without moving the rest of my face, but that's beside the point).
    Anyway, great tutorial.
    I'd love to see you doe the following expressions:
    1. Awww that's (extremely) cute
    2. Love
    3. Expressions on dead guys
    4. Sick expression
    5. Broken spirit (like I'm never gonna pass that test anymore, it's hopeless)
    6. Anguish (is that different from worried?)
    Anyway, the more extreme emotions. The emotions on a dead guy however, eyes open or closed, tells something why he died. A heart attack, unexpected event, natural, peaceful, etc. But the muscles on a dead guy can't move that extremely, so that's quite a challenge I think.

  • @MadamePretentious
    @MadamePretentious 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Excellent video. It got the idea of these expressions across in an understandable way. My only issue is with your worried expression.
    I don't know why you'd want to raise that one eyebrow for extreme worry. Whenever I draw a worried expression, I bring the eyebrows up similarly to what you'd do for a sad expression. That single, raised eyebrow makes me think of a more smarmy, sarcastic, or shifty-eyed look. I don't know. Would you like to explain that to me?

    After I watched this I sat down and drew the angriest face I've ever seen.
