I know it's a joke, but actually kind of makes sense. We tend to think that a rough sketch is just a random scribble with little value, but in reality most of the knowledge and ability of the artist are shown in a rough sketch too. So you are basically saying "he is a pro".
As a designer this video was very useful. I tend to find myself, when designing logos, products, layouts, etc., skipping straight to refined sketches because as artists, we tend to be self-conscious with messy work and we are all cast under this mindset that everything must be perfect 100% of the time. Thankyou Jazza
This explains the issue I always had with most 'shapes' tutorials & tips. I always felt like something was missing because (to a degree) the shapes seemed almost arbitrary, I still struggled to understand the subject's structure and perspective. Finally someone talks about the connection between 3D composition and 2D simplification. Thank you!
ytsiMMisty, I've had the same problem with "shapes" construction. We're told: "Break down the basic shapes - there's a square there. There's a triangle and a circle in that bit. Now just refine it down into the details." But it's not a square and a triangle and a circle. It's a body. My brain can't make the leap from rectangle to torso. Whether I try to sketch "freehand (not shapes), or whether I try to construct using shapes, the sketch still comes out more or less that same (which in my case is pretty bad). I will say, though, that using shapes might help with getting the proportions more correct. Peace

ATTENTION BROTHER!!! I have two very very sweet girlfriends who I show off (I smell like 100 not-alive orangutans oh nooo) in my perfectly great videos that most people consider to be the reason of life! Thank you for you attention, dear dude kid ebon,
Hes been drawing for 20 years, if he did 1 drawing a week he'd have completed 1040 drawings, if he did 1 a day it would be 7,300, but we know there have been videos and streams where he's done 3 or 4 drawings in 1 day at least, sometimes way more, it'd be an understatement to say he's done over 10,000 drawings, his sketches are going to be good, but that doesn't mean yours are bad, you've just done less than him, as long as you're making art, you'll keep improving, you've got this!
I’d also like to add that the “automatic drawing technique” in which you hold the pencil loosely and just allow your mind to unhinge and begin drawing...whatever is a good way to “stretch before you sketch”. I actually teach automatic drawing techniques at a local art school and it’s amazing how much better drawings become when people relinquish the pencil death grip. Just my 2B cents.
@@cynthiabrogan9215 it’s basically just meditation, but instead of focusing on not thinking, you’re making a slight detour to creative town. Then you grab a bus in crazy town, and take it through the whole place, sketching whatever passes by. Because the image is constantly changing, so too should the sketch. You won’t actually draw a specific thing in automatic drawing, but instead a mass of writhing shapes. Usually.
Watching this after years of watching you draw, I've realized that I now draw a lot like you do. My style is different, and my skill level is no where near yours, but when it comes to how I sketch out my base figures and poses, I already started drawing this way, all because of you. 😁
Here is Jazza explaining the important things that I learned by myself because nobody knew how to explain it right. You are lucky guys. You dont have to waste 3 years figuring out how to do something as basic as a sketch. Thank you Jazza for existing and helping the people.
I'm a self taught artist, and after 30 years, I've been trying to learn some of the fundamentals to finally address some of the areas I'm weaker in. I still enjoy going right in and drawing, but I'm actually seeing improvement when I sketch out the shapes and construction lines first and combining it with what I already know.
I've been drawin since I was 8 years old. So 12, almost 13 years now! And these are some pretty helpful tips! Another tip I can give you if you usually sketch traditionally: Use different pencils for different sketching!!! I tend to lose myself in the fun of sketching a lot and what I end up with is basically a final drawing...but it's in pencil. To prevent that. Take a pencil that seems it needs some sharpening, DONT SHARPEN IT and do the sketching with that! That way you'll also have a harder time adding details so then maybe you wont want to do them because of the t h i c c lines. At least that's my case haha. I usually use that for rough sketches. I use rough sketching just to find shapes; to get basic anatomy done for example. No details. Just shapes. Then if I want it to be a bit of a refined sketch I usually take my mechanical pencil and add a few details ontop BUT WITH A VERY LIGHT HAND. Then that's usually it for me cause I like to paint in acrylics. But Jazza's video has more info on how to move onto the inking process so watch that part again!
Perfect timing! I am a self taught sketcher and artist - I am 45 years old now, my cycles for sketching seems to be every 6 years. I needed the refresher pro tips - I needed to hear the process for the final art . I wasn't even using my pencil the right way for the final sketch.... so helpful. Keep your work Jazza. You are a great example to me and your community. You have given me the confidence to break through a wall. Thank you. Take care.

I thought this video was going to be more aggressive like most videos like these are but NOPE being Jazza he simply shows you "Hey you can make your art look better by doing this and referencing is completely ok!"
As an artist myself, I have "difficulty" in just doing the planned out sketch first and then detail it next. I try to do, everything at once. But I find this pretty simple example of sketching the base stuff out extremely helpful. Especially since I am buying an S6 for digital art purposes, so thanks alot, here is a like for an older video :D
You are spot on about using shapes. When I first started, I could never make a convincing stance with shapes that looked good. Reference photos make far more sense.
Different cloth weight differs from fabric to fabric.. and therefore they all have different levels of stiffness when resting on the body. Think denim vs silk. Does the fabric catch the air? Or does it breathe? Think parachute vs napkin Practice drawing curved lines and giving them different bends to imply that weight. Most folds typically lead back to one major spot.. like the elbow or knee. Loose fabric also creates folds when hanging. For armor... look up armors. The pieces that make up a full set. Armor isnt skin tight. Make it bulky. remember they have padding underneath
There is so much good information in this video that it almost doesn't do any of these ideas justice but it's such a good starting off point of ideas to learn more about.
This was like a welcome trip to the past when you were "draw with jazza." I like new Jazza too, but the "draw with" tutorial and character design era is what brought me to this channel, and I've missed it.
It's exactly the types of video that first brought me on this channel and I'm glad I didn't unsubscribed because I feel like now we are slowly going a tad more toward the roots of this channel and I love it!
THANKS it's really important a lot of people know about that "draw circle here, have line here, have square here" isn't the be-all end all of how to sketch.
Actually i believe most artists are self taught. Not many go and say "yeah im gonna take art classes" out of nowhere. Many start drawing in their childhood or teenagehood and discover talent there. From there only some continue depending on passion in art. But still the majority i believe. Its funny to think how repetition and practice alone teaches yourself better than any teacher and a young age of 12 with a ton of drawing practice you can already draw very complex stuff.
Just totally impressed: liked the critique of traditional teaching methods (always up for that), liked the reference to Intention as in methods of sketching ,and Mood as in where your heads's at during the process. Knowing how to undo tightness and wobbly lack-of-confidence is real important, so your ten minutes or so really got me back into it. Thank-U!
This is the first youtube video in a long long time that made me stop what I was doing and pay attention. Watched and loved every second. As a long time viewer, it's so fudging nice to see you be this comfortable and free. Thank you for being you
Yes, please more content like this!!! This is the best explanation of sketching technique & purpose that I've ever heard and I grew up with an artist for a Mom who taught me my first drawing, plus a couple of years of art in high school, and now my kid is a full-blown artist who likes to tell me how to do art (bc teens know everything, I've heard). I'm just getting back into it since illustration hasn't been my forte and this is blowing my mind.
Thank you for talking about pencil holding. I've watched countless tutorials and "how to" videos with my family and it always focuses on the actual sketch and not on how to hold the pencil. The tools (hands, pencils, and their minds) are more important than the result.
If you watch his other videos you’ll notice that he does the same thing lol The last video was most likely a joke. There is I guess like a 00000.1% chance that he is being held hostage or whatever, but yeah I highly doubt it xD No need to worry
This explains a looot about art for me! I always liked 'doodling', but I always struggled with turning a sketch I liked into a drawing, this helps out sooo much, thank you!
I study Industrial Design and I REALLY enjoy the fun and loose take you have on the things we learn in school that can be a bit "dry" at times.. This gives great perspectives, thanks!
Self taught artists always have a better way of explaining things and no how to get the information in your brain, without jazza I wouldn’t be wear I am now.thanks jazza
This is great!!!! I always see tutorials on Instagram that are just super short tutorials like this (limited time, so not enough to go in depth like this video but they still get the point across) and people just whine that there’s no rules to art and that they can do whatever they want. When yes in theory there’s no rules to art, but they’re just trying to make your drawing better and your life easier! You have to learn what “rules” there are so that you can break them properly. I struggle with sketching so much so I try and absorb everything I can when it comes to sketching. People are too afraid of constructive criticism and don’t want to take actual advice.

This is a game changer I had seen it done before but never even thought about using sketching as a means to generate ideas for drawing and I always thought of sketching as these shapes that help you get proportion right but I never even threw in my own interpretation of what shapes I should use I just used the shapes I thought I had to. Thank you, this was Very helpful.
This deep dive into sketching was insightful and helpful. I never really considered the importance of sketching and the difference between the types of sketching. This is awesome work!
Thank you I've been having problems with starting out my sketches because I've been trying to refine a rough sketch. You are the only person that I've seen talking about this separation and I think it will help me get better. thank you Jazza.
This is great information! I never realized this until now. It seems so obvious when you say it like that, I feel dumb for not realizing it (a good thing though). You always see people doing refined sketching and talking about keeping loose and soft, but I tend to be more exploritory, doodley, and heavy handed when I'm searching for how to draw what I want. I have always gotten stuck there because by the time I find my idea, the paper is an unrecoverable mess with heavy lines all over and I can't transition into line work or a refined drawing from there. Thanks Jazza, you've inspired me to try my hand at drawing again. :)

Same! I'm also self taught, and I 100% agree
10 min video.
People: 1 sec: Great!
Um everyone talks about him don't being held at gunpoint WHERE IS HE????
HE'S NOT IN THE STUDIO WHERE IS HE?????
Thank you!!! Omg I was wondering the same thing like where is he???
It's in the same studio as where the wall painting is. It's his corner/wall of fanart that he set up in the final stages of completing his studio.
@@brookekeel have y'all never noticed his studio has 3 different sets?
In his studio just in the fanart set... The studio has 3 sets
Ohhh Thank you XD
Just totally impressed: liked the critique of traditional teaching methods (always up for that), liked the reference to Intention as in methods of sketching ,and Mood as in where your heads's at during the process. Knowing how to undo tightness and wobbly lack-of-confidence is real important, so your ten minutes or so really got me back into it. Thank-U!
This is the first youtube video in a long long time that made me stop what I was doing and pay attention. Watched and loved every second. As a long time viewer, it's so fudging nice to see you be this comfortable and free. Thank you for being you
I REALLY NEED THIS. Thanks jazza!
I love your videos, I dare say: they have helped me a lot
U really dared to admit it cappuccino man same thing here though im still a nooooooobbbbb
Most art tutorials
Step 1: "Draw a circle"
Step 2: *giggles* "Ti hihi"
Step 3: *presents masterpiece* "as you can see that what easy..."
I'm just getting back into it since illustration hasn't been my forte and this is blowing my mind.
i miss these art tips so much! it broke more than half of my struggle with sketching to try ur tips, thanks a lot!
ok it's official the plant was holding him hostage!

Yes lol 😂

Jazza's the best artist ever god bless jazza and his happy family.
Thank you for talking about pencil holding. I've watched countless tutorials and "how to" videos with my family and it always focuses on the actual sketch and not on how to hold the pencil. The tools (hands, pencils, and their minds) are more important than the result.
thank you for making this video. As someone who is really trying to improve their art, but doesn`t even know where to begin. This is very appreciated.
You sir, have just quite literally, saved my art
"Draw with your shoulder"

My art teacher: draw with your wrist and do not move your elbow or shoulder
Me: this is stupid
My art teacher: WHAT DID YOU SAY
Me: n-nothing
Jazza is still looking to the side a little... I’m kinda worried
If you watch his other videos you’ll notice that he does the same thing lol The last video was most likely a joke. There is I guess like a 00000.1% chance that he is being held hostage or whatever, but yeah I highly doubt it xD No need to worry
I agree
Pretty sure he's looking at he script lol
@@everydayistacotuesday9847 Could be... but usually he doesn’t...
Same
This explains a looot about art for me!
Classic Jazza content, I love it!
Inspiring, fun and educational - I hope you do more like this. The algorithm can suck it 🖤
Me, who has already been doing this: "my eyes have been opened and I'm ready to fight Disney with my power"
Jazza! You're back and not awkward this time 😜 ❤
Self taught artists always have a better way of explaining things and no how to get the information in your brain, without jazza I wouldn’t be wear I am now.thanks jazza

This tutorial video was so useful. You forget how important the sketching process is before getting into the intense details.
I tried this, and immediately loved the sketch I made despite not warming up! This is going to make me love traditional sketching again!
Yay Jazza’s smiling again, thank god the last video was quite depressing

funny how his expression and mood is so different than the other video
i wondered if it was fake
It never hurts to brush up on the basics. I loved the style of this video.
As an insomniac and an American sometimes I wonder maybe it is worth it because now I get to watch jazza videos early.
Same, could someone with a normal sleeping schedule do that? I think not

IS IT THO??? He still acts weird....this must be holo Jazza 😨
