A Queens woman who thought she won a $43 million jackpot is suing Resorts World Casino in Queens after being told the slot machine had malfunctioned.
Last August, Katrina Bookman said she won millions on the "Sphinx Lot Machine." but her joy was short-lived when officials told her the machine had malfunctioned and she didn't actually win, referring to a disclaimer on the machine which states, "Malfunction voids all pays and plays."
The casino offered Katrina a steak, which she refused. Resorts Casino officials declined to comment.
So the machines are only working properly when you lose your money !? 🤔

@@AW-nz4gl...there are some progressive jackpots that are tied to a network of machines across casinos. When the progressive is won, the network goes through a program to ensure that it is legit. This can take up to 48 hours. I don't know what algorithm is used to determine if the payout is genuine but I have seen a 4 million dollar progressive hit and the winner was given a comp room for 2 days to make sure the win was authenticated. It was and she got a 4.2 million dollar check. This happened in Tunica Ms. The same thing happened to that lady from Hawaii who won 48 million in Las Vegas. It took the casino 3 days before her jackpot was proved authentic and payment was authorized. When I won 5700 at the blackjack table in Tunica, the dealer had to stop and upstairs had to review the film. It took them 2 hours before I got my winnings and this over a side blackjack bet.

The fact is that the dollar value displayed onscreen is nothing more than a software bug; if you look at the first 8 numbers, they equal the first 8 digits of the max value of an unsigned 32 bit integer. Unless you're a software dev, you have no idea why this is a malfunction.
The casino weren't lying when they said it was a malfunction. The machine wasn't displaying a dollar value, it was displaying a bug that reflects an error, missing value, or overflow. In other words, there could have been a condition that caused an integer calculation to display more than what the register (a location in a processor) can store.
So yes, machines can malfunction all the time. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Ok so I did a little research and here's why the Ohio case and most likely this case will end without a payout. Video slot machines have been known to malfunction in a way where the player is informed they have won credits without their being a winning combination on the payout line. Also at times the machines have also been known to malfunction by telling the player they have won a certain amount of credits that goes way above the maximum payout for that machine. That was the case in Ohio, machine did not have a win on the payout line but stated player had won, with that I would have to agree with the casino. A player should only expect to receive credits when their spin actually has a winning combination and player should only expect to receive the amount posted as the reward for each winning combination. Now as far as regular slot machine malfunctions, apparently they are known to have gears slip and where the wheels will show a winner the computer is registering the wheels are on different symbols. In that case I feel it should 100% be paid. There isn't any way for the player to know the machine isn't working correctly and it would be on the casino to discover malfunctions and correct then or shut down the machine. Again since this machine did not have a way of winning $43 million and the player would have been aware of that as she was playing, with payout signs being posted, there is no way she could expect that jackpot.

I looked more in to this case. The machine she was playing at only had a max jackpot of something like 8000 dollars so it was obviously a glitch. In this case I say they should pay the 8000.
They could throw in another $2000 for emotional distress.

The lack of public outrage is how casinos get away with shit like this. Imagine it happened to you, people!
If every time a person wins at a casino the casino has the discretion as to whether they feel like paying or not, they can claim malfunction when they feel like it .. or claim the dealers were drunk or on drugs when it suits them.
Any casino that employs these types of policies should have these policies displayed ON THE FRONT DOORS and every ten feet in the casino in large font with bold white letters with red backgrounds. Actually, the casino should be required BY LAW to remove any machine(s) falling under such a policy to prevent any future improprieties.
Not only that, but if a casino decides not to pay the amount a patron has won, then the casino manager on duty must be fired immediately, all of the money the patron spent/lost must be refunded, and the patron must be gifted a 5% stock/ownership of the casino refusing to pay the full amount .. with the casino taking out and paying the premium for an insurance policy for the full amount they refused to pay until the patron receives the amount that they did not receive .. just in case the casino tries to declare bankruptcy or something equally slimy.
That would quickly put an end to those kinds of shenanigans.

It is the Gaming Commissions responsibility to ensure fair operations, so even if it was something fishy going on, you'd have to prove that someone was in on it that could interfere with the investigation. Machines are run by computers and since this was a video slot machine the malfunction is noticable by the player since rewards for winning combinations are posted. When she received a screen for a $43 million payout she would have known that wasn't possible for the machine she was playing again because rewards for winning combinations are posted. If this machines highest payout win is 6500 credits then the 43 million is well above that and we'll above what a player could expect. Posting the winning amounts is how the casino is not at fault.
This has happened many times. It's unfortunate that she is not going to get paid. What's worse, she has to pay her lawyer's fee even though he probably had an idea that the case was hopeless.
