While some people are lucky enough to win big at casinos, the hardest part can sometimes be collecting the winnings. Inside Edition’s investigative team has found people who thought they'd be taking home huge earnings, only to discover that wasn't the case. Katrina Bookman, 44, hit a $42.9 million jackpot at Resorts World Casino in Queens, N.Y. She posed next to the winning machine as it displayed her earnings. As a crowd started gathering around, security showed up. #InsideEdition

The first woman's jackpot of 42,949,672.76$ does look awfully close to the max value of a 32 bit unsigned integer, which is 4,294,967,295. Given that the machine probably works in pennies, the machine must have somehow produced a winning of negative 20 pennies and underflown to that insane value. I can understand the casino's frustration but if you can't procure machines that have such stupid bugs then you kinda deserve that
Agreed. Where I live, their machines get audited, inspected and checked routinely. The same goes for any software they run. They should be forced to cough up any amount they display on the screen, even if it's in the billions. It's their responsibility to make sure it works correctly every time.

Jerry Rape lost his case for $1.3 million when the court decided the casino had tribal immunity provisions in federal law, in which the Supreme Court agreed. Veronica Castillo was denied her $8.3 million win, but provided $80 dollars in freeplay/meals, and a free weekend stay at the Lucky Eagle Casino, she was seeking a lawyer in 2015, but I couldn't find any source of if she ever took them to court.

I feel so bad for people who hit a jackpot but don't get it due to a "malfunction." I've been going to the casino for five years and never won a jackpot. With my luck, if I do win my first jackpot, they'll probably tell me it malfunction. I would probably get arrested because I would either break the machine or break someone's arm.
Edit: I hit my first jackpot for $1300 last month. I got the money within 15 minutes. I walked out the casino with $1100.

I've been working at one of the largest casino in the world and every slot machine I walk by says any malfunction will void the game. But both Casinos I worked in had multimillion jackpots paid out to patrons without an issue but the fact they can do it is a gamble on top of a gamble.

Congress needs to make a law stating that even if a machine “malfunctions”, the casino must pay out the amount. If the machine states the winner won more than the max amount, then the casino should be forced to pay at least the max amount.
I don't go to casinos so I'm not sure if they already do this, but the maximum amount a machine can payout should be listed on each machine so that the player can see. So if situations like this happened the players won't get their hopes up too much.

It is also about what the highest possible payout rate is. 49 million is probably not realistic so it can be relatively easy to confirm the machine did malfunction. However, because it is so extremely rare, I think casino's should pay at least the highest possible payout of that particular machine.

If a casino security guard comes up to you and says a machine is broken before they even have the time to take a close look at it, thats how you know the machine is supposed to be rigged to never give out a jackpot. Thats the only way they'd know instantly if its broken is if it gives something it was preprogrammed to never give.
This reminds me of a story about Pepsi giveaway that took place in Russia in early 2000s: if you purchased enough Pepsi products and provided a proof, you would have been invited to a promo stand in a shopping mall, where there was a car and a bowl full of keys. You had to pick one key and try to open the car lock(ancient times of mechanical car locks)- and if it fit - the car was yours. Nobody could win until one guy came and... actually opened it! And guess what? He was sued for cheating because ALL THE KEYS WERE FAKE AND NONE OF THEM WAS SUPPOSED TO UNLOCK THE CAR
It can be pretty obvious if it malfunctioned. If a machine has a jackpot of $10,000 and they win more, it malfunctioned. Also the first woman's one was 100% a malfunction. The largest number that can be stored in 32 bit unsigned integer is 4,294,967,295 and she won 4,294,967,276 cents. Essentially the machine let her balance go negative by a few cents and since an unsigned integer can't be negative it loops back around to the highest value possible.
They really should get some compensation larger than they paid for it malfunctioning, they risked their money gambling and the casino couldnt uphold their side of the deal.

That’s probably not true, you see a machine like that has a payout rate and if they know when the payout is gonna happen, and someone gets it before/after then the machine has functioned smh
If there is a malfunction the person playing the machine should get the highest payout the machine has to offer
If they hit a jackpot and they say it "malfunctions" they should at least pay half or less.

I seen this happen once and Grand Casino Hinckley in MN years back, the regular slots have like a posted max payout usually on the machine and this guy hit a bonus feature and it kept retriggering withing the bonus and paying out more and I could see the amount he was winning was over the max payout listed on the machine and there were like casino managment staff all around him. The payout for this machine was much lower I believe in the thousands but I didn't stay around to find out if they just paid out what the max the machine could pay or just voided it all together. I also want to mention once at this casino long time ago prob 20 years ago I put in my players card and ended up with all the players points from another person over $200 worth, I did alert the casino management and I showed them the machine were it happen, they gave some free play to which was nice because they didn't owe me anything, I just wanted to alert them so they could correct it.
