SUMMARY:
-It all began in the 1960s, when a poor Romanian accountant was trying to make ends meet and feed his family. He decided to invent his own algorithm to win lotteries.
-Mandel claimed that, in a lottery with 6 total winning numbers, he could accurately predict 5 of them. He won the first prize, which was about $19 thousand, paid his debts to everyone who helped him, and still benefited quite a lot.
-He settled in Australia and got access to every Commonwealth resource available for anyone with Australian citizenship.
-The new method included six steps: calculate the total number of combinations possible in any given lottery, find lotteries where the jackpot was at least three times as big as the number of combinations, raise money to buy every single combination, print out millions of tickets, deliver them to the official dealers and take the prize!
-Over the years he succeeded in creating what he called a “lotto syndicate”: a network of hundreds of investors who believed in his method and were more than willing to help.
-On February 15, 1992, Mandel’s team hit not only the jackpot but also the second and third prizes, along with dozens of minor ones, their overall winnings amounting to about $30 million.

Everybody I told for the past 30 years about trying out this method said I was nuts because the odds were to great. I swore up and down the lottery had just 1 rich investor with enough money to cover all the bets and taking the wins under someone else they paid off to look like a single different winner.
The math doesn't add up, not anymore anyways.

When you buy every single combination, then you are not winning the lottery you are just buying the win. A massive difference.

Simple. Lotts does not want to pay for jackpots. Companies or governments can make more from quickpickers and so on when the jackpot is becoming bigger and bigger while noone is claiming it.

Actually he didn't risk anything, that was the whole point of the video. The only time he risked was in the Virginia lottery but even then, the chances of him winning were more than 60%.

Not every lottery works the same.
Some lotteries only draw from the sold tickets. The prizepool in those lotteries is smaller than the purchasing price of all sold ticket.
However Mandel's method involves lotteries that draw random numbers in a range. This means that the winning lottery combination often isn't sold. With those conditions lottery companies can make the prizepool much larger; some winning combinations will not be sold anyway.
Mandel understood the maths and calculated in which lottery the prizepool was 3 times purchasing price of all possible combinations.
His method only works if he is the only one doing this.

That was the UK National Lottery. There were other UK lotteries, which he won, before that one was announced in 1994.

Any other game base on chances could be won by a similar trick. The resourceful can always use that trick, the lucky winner would have to share. That trick has a flaw; it becomes less rewarding. So it is not as rewarding as the winning result based on luck.

There was a thing in the country of serbia.
There was a show on tv where the object of the game was: you call the show and give them a unique number with two decimals, basically a price. After a few h0urs of playing whoever had called in the lowest but unique number, wins a car. Important to know for the story, when you call in your lowest number and automated system tells you if you have the lowest unique number or not.But after a while they figured out that the same guy had won dozens of cars, but had friends etc. Come collect the prize as the supposed winner.
How did he do it?
He basically had connected several computers and mobile phones and automatically called in a number after number and the computers would calculate what the right number to call in was.
The guy got arrested, but he basically said it wasnt illegal, but the show and the police claimed he hadnt played in the "spirit" of the game.
No idea how the lawsuit ended.

Back in 2007 I missed the "lotto south" by 1 number. I still won a few hundred. But it wasn't $14 million. What's worse, the thought came to me, "I should bet 8, 9, 10 along with those three higher numbers" then I argued with myself, "nah I'm going to play 8,9,11 because three consecutive numbers will never come in and 10 is ice cold." Long story short, I'm still middleclass. Ug. That night, the $14 million went out to someone else and they closed the lotto south. :-(

But it didn't work.
I think it was too many results to display.
I later calculated the number of combinations. I don't know how even to this day.
Because I wanted to know how many tickets to buy in order for one to get jackpot.

Most of use just wouldn't buy the number of tickets needed to cover every possible combinations leaving chance to 0. Buying tickets in small batches would require that you get to thousands of retailers and purchase them individually after 1 draw and before the next which is impractical.
The man who became famous hadn't predicted the winning numbers, he basically made use of the system for his gains by buying up every possible combinations. If he came up with an algorithm that would predict which numbers are likely going to come up based on previous winning numbers, He wouldn't need to buy half as many tickets and still hit the jackpot. There may be people who claimed they have beaten the odds by buying numbers that are likely to come up than simply covering all the possible combinations.
