  • 1978 El Camino - Troubleshooting Horn Wiring & Relay.
    This was some troubleshooting on a broken horn for a 1978 El Camino. Other General Motors cars (Malibu, Buick Regal, Oldsmobile Cutlass, Pontiac Lemans) are similar. The first thing to check is if the horn itself works by jumping a wire directly from the battery to the horn. Next thing to check is the fuze, which is the same fuze as the courtesy lights. So if the horn fuze is blown, the courtesy lights won't work. Then check the horn ring to see if it makes a good ground. Next step is to check the wiring from the horn ring to the horn relay to see if you have continuity through the steering column. You may need to pull the steering wheel with steering wheel puller if you have a problem with the wiring going through the steering column. If that checks out and you have power to the horn relay, then you have a bad horn relay. Also note, it's good idea to check the fuzes with an ohmmeter since sometime they could have a hairline crack and you won't see it.
    The location of the horn relay is under the dash above the emergency brake.

    Good advice and I love the commentary. I'm trying to trace a horn problem on my '74 Buick and now I know where the problem spots could be!

    thanks for helping me locate the horn relay on my 81 elky. when you first said above the brake pedal it didn't occur to me that you meant the parking brake pedal. yeah, it's a bear to get to. turns out it was some loose connections at the relay. horn works, at least for now.

    Thanks for the video. For you 1978-1980 Monte Carlo owners the horn relay is in the same place.

    Thanks for the video. About to trace the horn problem on my '80 Monte. Seems to be identical. Much appreciated.

    The horn on my '82 GMC 3/4-ton was working then it stopped working. I have a Power Probe III, which helped me figure out that the contacts in the fuse block were gummed up. I spent a couple hours carefully cleaning the block with a pick tool and electronic contact cleaner. Once I finished cleaning, I put some dielectric grease on the contacts and put everything back together. The horn has been working great.

      +Jeff Richards Bad news, my horn relay wasn't there. It looks like it has been removed and replaced with a wire of some sort. Time to start again...

    So much extra helpful information in this video thanks. I have a 83 Monte Carlo I bought. Trying to find out why the horn don't work, but I your video very applicable for more shit. They also told me it was a 350 they added in and I been curious how to verify. 👍👌

    Neat..last time i had to fix a car horn was on a 66 volks beetle...ran a new wire down the steering column. Sounded more like a door bell buzzer...6 volt system

    • @syyenergy7
      @syyenergy7  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was that 6 volt? I had a 65 Beetle and rebuilt the engine on it with the 18 fin super cool fins. Actually my dad's friend, who was VW expert, bailed me out on that one. I was new at this stuff back then. That's one reason I like the old '85 Suzuki Jeep I had since almost new. It's simple like a VW beetle.

    • @LarsonFamilyFarm-LLC
      @LarsonFamilyFarm-LLC 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      syyenergy7 Yes 6 volt original...think the '67's went to 12 volt. I did the clutch and pressure plate, throw-out bearing on mine...found it was only coupled up with 3 bolts..engine to trans-axle. Yep, I like your 85 jeep..simple

    • @syyenergy7
      @syyenergy7  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Accuracy Marked
      Yeah, I guess my '65 was 6 volt then, now that I think of it. You jogged another memory. I put a clutch in the VW at the Sunoco station at night and the old man who owned the station came by right when we were done. He was'what the hell are you doing, using the lift?". Told him the throttle cable needed to be fixed. That happened to be the last thing we were installing. Good then he didn't see the engine out. :)

    So when I touch green horn wire to steering shaft I see a faint spark. However no sound. Horns are fine when jumpered. My dome light works anything I'm missing.

    • @syyenergy7
      @syyenergy7  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      probably the relay. All the horn button does is ground, so you can check that with an ohm meter.

    • @cfmechanic
      @cfmechanic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      syyenergy7 thanks for the fast response. Best i can tell is I neglected to clean contact button and after driving and steering now horn works. Also found a small three wire plug disconnected so I also reconnected that howerver horn wouldn't blow instill after I drove it

      +syyenergy7 ok. yeah mine isn't part of it and its just od. the car has a 87 Monte header panel on it and with the swich its almost like a floor mount switch but its all plastic and has a huge bracket

      Both the relay AND corrosion on the horn button itself.

    You wont believe how many people wont bother looking for the relay and think it only uses a fuse and even after replacing the fuse, it still doesnt work, then they think theres an open or a short, they go to the local auto parts store, buy one of those "fix it" black horn button, attach it to the side of the steering column and hot wire it directly to the horn(s). argh

  • @justincarr2517
    @justincarr2517 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dude all I wanted to know is where the fuse is. I definitely DID NOT need to know you had the build sheet for your car, didn't ask about a steering wheel puller, let's stay on task
