Thanks a bunch! I thought I'd have to buy a new starter, but after dropping it in my 1992 Chevy Suburban 1500 2 wd (with the 350), I noticed that there was a frayed and dangling purple wire. I believe this was to the S terminal. I taped it up with Gorilla Tape and put a ring terminal on it, found the right washer & lock washer, and nut (8mm fine thread) and VOILA! Now I'm waiting for my son to help me lift it up back into position. I'm not strong enough! (I'm a 73 yr old retired gas station mechanic!)
Excellent video. I bought a 1986 Chevy Silverado with no starter. I have replaced a few starters over the years but just memorized how the wires hooked up at that time. Anyway I appreciate the details in your video. Thanks again.
The purple wire has to stay- it’s the key switch power wire for cranking, the yellow R wire can go away if you’re running a newer ignition than the old points style..
Was really hoping you would have stated what the typical "S" wire amperage draw is. The ones I have are drawing about 60 amps just for the solenoid, which seems excessive to me. Even the new one right out of the box is like this. Makes wires hot also if you crank for any length of time. The one on my 04 5.3L only draws 10A, is there really this must difference in starter solenoids between 94 and 2004?
Looks to me like a diode is a good idea for a stock starter? I'd have to see full diagram, but sounds like it's important to prevent pulling any portion of starting current through ignition circuit & coil? I assume your kit has directions on which end attaches to starter. I'm still running dual points [yeah, I know], so thanks for the video!
67 Camaro 396 MSD blaster coil and full sized delco reman starter. I do not have the yellow wire to my starter only the main feed and S purple lines. I was having hot start issues and believe this might be the issue. Do you have a wire/diode or part that can help me out. Thanks!
I have a 69 and the start engages but does not disengage when the key is turned off. It stays riding on the flywheel. We have purple on the mini starter and the run wire on nothing. Any advice?
Does that Yellow Diode wire get wired to a 5 pin 12v relay ? I have an 84 vette that has many wires pulled out. I had just saw this video and noticed that diode wire you sell looks JUST like a wire that came with this car. It had a note on it that said “starter Motor” and at the other end it was attached to a Bosch 5 pin relay with a note that said “use 4 pins only”. I haven’t been able to to figure out what that relay is. And this DOES have an HEI dist. So I’m guessing the guy ran that yellow wire to a relay ? Another wire to the relay goes to a ground. The other 3 pins don’t have anything to them, BUT there Is A wire or two near the battery that has the right pigtail attachment that “could” connect to this. So I’m wondering if I’m going down the right path figuring this rely goes to that starter and that I should trace wires under that assumption ? HEEEELLLLPPPPPP LOL
I’m a little confused with why you would need the diode with an HEI. On my mini-starter with a SBC and older style ignition running HEI, I have the S tab (not ring) on starter solenoid to the S on my ignition. What would the diode be connected to?
Great instruction. I have a 5.3L Motor from a 2003 Chevy Silverado installed in my 1967 Oldsmobile Cutlass. I am using the original ignition switch but matching this with the 5.3 Engine with its starter and 4L60e Transmission with a Park Neutral Safety Switch. Is it possible of providing a drawing or diagram that supports my configuration? Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Look for wiring diagrams for a 1998-2002 camaro, it's an ls1, but basically the same motor and transmission. There will be plenty of resources on that year camaro/firebird, LS1tech is a great source for to ask.
I have a 1976 chevy nova I am trying to install a mini started but I have not been able to find out how to wire. When I wired it up as soon as I put the battery cable on it started spinning? There is actually 3 wires the battery wire the start wire the other wire is what sends power back into the car on the old starter it went on with the battery wire any suggestions
Could you explain, please? An idea of a motor with an Intertor to fill the battery and a Dimaror motor to spin a huge wheel at a good speed, is it possible? I am looking for a suitable medium to circulate electricity, is it possible for example ???
But I have singel hei E core type ignition coil I do have that 4 pin gm ignition module wuld that R terminal still work on me hei set up? What rating is that diode and what kinde of diode shuld I use? I dont know if I done somthing wrong me fuse just pops when I try to use that terminal. What direction shuld that diode label face??? I dont know if that wire can cause problems bouth me 4 pin gm ignition module and me positive linear voltage regulator inside the dashboard are polarity sensitive so how can I bypass this problem I have more of those starter selenoids wuld that problem be solved if I winde 2 starter selenoid in series ore pararel configuration????
I purchased a new starter motor for my Same Corsaro 70 Tractor. The tractor starts in about 3 seconds during which time a loud rattling sound comes from the Starter Motor. Does anyone have any ideas.
I have a 68 chevelle, car only comes on when i jump the starter with a screwdriver. Got purple on r and ground. Positive on main just like the car was before but for some reason doesnt even crank. I didnt connect the solenoid since it didnt have it before. Any help guys?
Why does my starter have TWO wires on the same connection? It's black and red. It makes NO sense what the hell these are for, and I can't find any info.
1:00 You are using the term "Bendix" incorrectly .. GM Starts ar specifically NOT Bendix Driver Starters. Bendix Drive Starters were invented by Vincent Bendix in 1914, and they use a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT pinion engagement system, (It's called Bendix Drive) as compared to to GM "Solenoid Engaged" pinions.
Not enough information, but it sounds like the starter coil is weak? If it doesn't hold bendix out while starting, the gears just bounce off of flexplate and everything just gets chewed up. An undervoltage will behave the same way - check your ignitiion switch and verify it's not dropping voltage and wires are in good condition -beyond that, a loose firewall connector can drop voltage too. Something as simple as cut insulation that partially grounds out can leave you scratching your head with an intermittant problem. Alternatively, something as simple as poor lubrication of bendix assembly can make the gears hang on start, and flywheel gets damaged as the gears don't retract after starting correctly - the flywheel is driving them off after engine is running.
These mini starters need to have the R terminal for step up voltage pretty fucking lame to delete that option and you have to buy a diode kit more china shit to install in your car and fuck up your life fuck this shit stick with stock!

Fantastic I never seen so much information packed into a 3-minute video thank you very much

Just fixed my wife's daily driver - our '74 Suburban - based on this video. Thanks much!
@fredfrancis5221 Your wife is awesome, I cant get my lady to be happy in a car only 21yrs old!
Excellent video.

Good explanation, exactly what i was looking for to understand the R-term.
AWSOME into, you just broke down EVERYTHING ever needed to know in s simple video!!! Thank you
Excellent description of functions of terminals.
Excellent video and really helped me with my swap. You saved my bacon on the R terminal.
thanks a million sir for sharing you knowledge i was struggling putting my 454 starter back!!
Thank you , this information was very helpful to me 🙌
So the purple wire can be eliminated if you are running later than 67 and an MSD ignition?
The purple wire has to stay- it’s the key switch power wire for cranking, the yellow R wire can go away if you’re running a newer ignition than the old points style..
Excellent video, thank you.

hi - very helpful. Willa 1 amp diode work? I found Littelfuse 1A 400v

Great Job, Thank you.
What do you do w/ the White/Orange/Purple wire that runs from the coil to the fuse panel w/ this setup? (1967 Camaro)
What if I have a ballast? Do I no longer need to connect through my ballast but straight from “S” on starter to “+” on coil as shown?
67 Camaro 396 MSD blaster coil and full sized delco reman starter. I do not have the yellow wire to my starter only the main feed and S purple lines. I was having hot start issues and believe this might be the issue. Do you have a wire/diode or part that can help me out. Thanks!
They're probably mostly all the same, some big ones have heat sinks.
Would you make a video of the ignition 2 circuit in a tri-5 Chevy.

Total rookie here. I’m trying to set up a tachometer on an 85 C60 bus running a 350 Chevy engine. Do I connect to the S terminal?
No. Tach wire goes from hei directly to the tachometer via firewall
Cranking voltage is about 9.6 volts so the coil runs at this voltage in both cranking and running modes.
Is that wire they’re selling a resistance wire?
Hello, do I need this wire if I am using a new HEI distributor with a factory GM starter?
Could you explain, please? An idea of a motor with an Intertor to fill the battery and a Dimaror motor to spin a huge wheel at a good speed, is it possible?
I am looking for a suitable medium to circulate electricity, is it possible for example ???
On a 2018 L83 engine starter, is there just 12 volt, purple (S) wire and the (r) wire which can be yellow or pink?
But I have singel hei E core type ignition coil I do have that 4 pin gm ignition module wuld that R terminal still work on me hei set up? What rating is that diode and what kinde of diode shuld I use?
I dont know if I done somthing wrong me fuse just pops when I try to use that terminal.

So if im trying to run a push to start i can run a wire from battery to stock R or S terminal
If the Corvette is upgraded to a no points system with a newer distributor do I still need to run that yellow wire? Or can it just be eliminated?
And do you know now
Is it efi?
2007 Chevy Uplander van LS starter how many wires go to it
Where does the red , yellow, black, and brown wires go on a GM starter?
What about a 1972 c10. Originally points with a stock starter converted to hei and mini starter? Do I need the diod wire or no?
That's what I'm here trying to figure out.
Great video
Dude you made to do these videos..Truth
"truth" stop talking like that
I purchased a new starter motor for my Same Corsaro 70 Tractor. The tractor starts in about 3 seconds during which time a loud rattling sound comes from the Starter Motor. Does anyone have any ideas.
Thank you for your help

Commected to "s" i mean...not r
Is the wire for the "R" connected to a relay? Thanks for the video.
No, it is not.
How is a 1979 Cadillac DeVille phaeton wire hooked up?
Do you do an engine Harness for the mopar v8
Very informative
All too often we hear people confusing a Bendix starter motor Bendix drive/pinion gear with a Bendix manufactured sprag clutch/pinion gear.
Why does my starter have TWO wires on the same connection? It's black and red. It makes NO sense what the hell these are for, and I can't find any info.
I should of bought my harness from this place . Painless has no info .
Do I connect both positive and negative wires to the direct feed?
Edwar Johnson no
I would like to purchase the bypass wire, 1989 Chevy Cheyenne c2500 350 tbi . Please contact .
Thanks
Is the direct feed your tongue, or a different part?
Sure you should try that.
Mine is G and S....
I have 4 total wires. Wheres the 4 wire go????
What if starter sticks won't stop cranking until disconnect battery cable?
Did you try to disconnect the Solenoid? Probably there's a short in the wiring, it could be in the starter but that's unlikely.
اللهم صل وسلم وبارك على عبدك ورسولك محمدﷺ
So without diode car will be running even if ignition key is swicthed off this doesnt make sense

Help me please , My chevi break the tape of starter engine.... I repair the Flex plate . Why happend this

Is that wire called a resistance wire?
I had the same question,
Thank you very much....
so if I use a hei distrubito I don't need to use R post ??
if you have a 1967 or older ignition switch you need to he says in the video.
Some gm starters like my 86 monte have all three on one large terminal.
Mine too 87 Camaro
What if you have HFI ?
Good news
Whatabout gtound qire
The case grounds itself to the block
Thank you.
These mini starters need to have the R terminal for step up voltage pretty fucking lame to delete that option and you have to buy a diode kit more china shit to install in your car and fuck up your life fuck this shit stick with stock!
